Oh, no! The poor and the disabled are under attack by the inaction of Trump and the Democrats. Things are getting bad. Combined with lack of funds for SNAP/Food Stamps, people might die. :(

    This is getting serious.

I don't feel sorry for them.

In 2017, when I was looking for an apartment in Dallas, I found a great "luxury apartment" ... 1,200+ square feet, 2 bedrooms, 2 bath, 2 car garage, pool, exercise room with state of the art equipment, etc. Just $700 per month!!! I told them I'd be right over to sign a lease. But then they told me it would be over $1,500 for me because of my income. I had to have an income below $50,000 per year to get the $700 rent.

The "poor" get all kinds of freebies in the U.S. It's sickening. I put myself through grad school and I end up living in the same place with people who never graduated high school because they get government subsidies. Life is not fair.

This more than any other post in the history of this forum sums up the Conservatives. A lack of empathy to the point of cruelty.

“If you’re not a liberal at 20 you have no heart. If you’re not a conservative at 40 you have no brain.”

Everyone has equal opportunity. To say conservatives are cruel because we don’t want to give freebies to some and pay for it ourselves is a bonehead statement.

What does this have to do with YOU calling all conservatives cruel? And wouldn’t it completely contradict that statement.

I just want life to be fair. With income redistribution on a massive scale, life is far from fair. It’s a joke.

According to Texas Republican's opinion on the poor it's farmers own fault, everyone has equal opportunity, because he had to pay more for rent or some such nonsense.

That's friggin right. Caveat Emptor. NEVER give a sucker an even break. The poor should be drained of their cash, by payday loans, and all manner of trickery. They should pay moar for things. This is the way of the world.

IF they didn't want to be predated on, they shouldn't have been born poor.

I have never understood this mindset that because you struggled, you require the exact same type of struggle and hardship for others that you had to experience.

Who ever said that life was fair?

Social safety nets are in place to help people who fall on hard times. THAT is one of the things that makes America great. The fact that there are people who are taking advantage of the system tells me that people who work within the system are not doing their job properly. It tells me that some people have learned to 'work the system' - just like Trump has admitted himself, time and time again, about his own activity gaming a system. But comments about people getting what they deserve with this shutdown - people now unable to pay their rent or pay for life saving medication - shows me the ways in which America is no longer great.

Oh brother. What a bunch of crap. I get a small social security check (I'm old) and I have a small retirement income. I have just enough income to not be eligible for any freebies or discounts. I pay the full amount of rent, regular price for utilities, I buy my own computer and cell phones, pay for my own food, pay a 20% copay on medical etc.
I have about $250 left over after all my bills are paid.

On the other hand, my neighbors are on government housing and get a slough of other freebies. Free mental health care, food, cash etc. One neighbor is obese and got the feds to pay for a new recliner for her because she has trouble getting off the couch. One day she claimed to drop her pill box full of pills, including opioids, and the mental health clinic came to her house and picked up the pills for her. I kid you not.

After they pay their bills, these freebie-addicted government charges have about $400 left over. I would be better off if I didn't have a retirement investment. I am actually being punished for having invested a small amount for my retirement.

Yup. the poor are being taken advantage of.

You are SO correct. The Republicans try hard to means test all folks. And those that are above desperate, are fleeced. This is true. Democrats however, endeavor to make wholesale changes, to improve the human condition, without donut holes and deprivations, based on level of desperation.

All should be treated with dignity. Thus, you shouldn't be left out in the cold healthcare wise AT LEAST.

Social safety nets? Created so a high school dropout earning $20,000 per year can live in a luxury apartment with well educated professionals earning $150,000 per year?

    Ugh.

Non citizens especially illegal aliens and an open border without a wall are more important than American low income renters.

I don’t understand the mindset where a high school dropout should expect to live in a luxury apartment with people who earn eight times his salary.

Why should the government pay his rent so he can live just like me? Should the government also buy him a BMW so he can drive just like me?

If we bought the poor (who have made terrible life choices) luxury vehicles, would that make you happy?
