Part of it is the gross vagueness of the term. 'Liberal' is used to refer to anything from Classical Liberal to Progressive Liberal, which are polar opposite. Between them are establishment democrats, anarcho communists and anyone that doesnt identify as a conservative, just as examples. Some of these group have little in common with eachother but may call themselves or be called by others 'liberal.' I try to avoid the term entirely.

To put anarcho communists "between them" is ludicrous. This idea does exclude any form of liberalism. It has nothing to do with being liberal. Liberals depend on government to help improve the human condition. Liberals believe government plays a critical role in society that nothing else can. There are no elected Democrats who want to abolish the government. So while you are right that the word "liberal" has been severely confused and misrepresented by the lying right-wing media, your own explanation includes this confusion. Liberal and Conservative are two ends of a spectrum. Those are polar opposites. Strictly speaking, liberals want change and conservatives don't. Those are the most basic definitions. Now trumpers think a liberal is anyone who doesn't adore their lying tin god.
