The EU hit Iran’s intelligence services with sanctions on Tuesday (8 January) after accusing Tehran of being behind plots to assassinate regime opponents on Dutch, Danish and French soil.

The move by the 28-nation bloc was announced as the Dutch government said it believed Iran was behind the murders of two dissidents in 2015 and 2017.

“Very encouraging that (the) EU has just agreed on new targeted sanctions against Iran in response to hostile activities and plots being planned and perpetrated in Europe, including Denmark,” Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said.

Sanctions include the freezing of funds and other financial assets of the Iranian intelligence ministry and individuals, officials said.

“Iran is expected to cooperate fully in removing the present concerns and, where necessary, aiding in criminal investigations,” the letter said.

“If such cooperation is not forthcoming, further sanctions cannot be ruled out,” it added......snip~

Just what is needed. More Sanctions on Iran and freezing up more of their money. Add this onto the other Sanctions by the US. Hopefully soon their people will rise up and get rid of the Mullahs and their deviate government. What say ye?

**** sanctions... no one is going to rise up, the middle class is disappearing. Iranians will suffer terribly under sanctions and the IRG will only tighten it's hold on Iran

One of them guys is a convicted Iranian terrorist who massacred 70 people with a bomb, and the west just harbors them.
He got killed like your regular Osama Bin Laden. Nobody cried there.

For better or worse sanctions worked in South Africa and ushered in a new government. They could do the same in Iran

What about the one in France? What about the other one. The Woman? Tell us how she presented such a problem for the Laughing stock known as Iranian Intelligence. The oxymoron.

Sanctions worked in South Africa because they (the Apartheid government) decided to risk change instead of doing it North Korea poor style. The poorest of the poor was suffering most under sanctions in south Africa (the majority of them black).

    My objections to sanctions are;

    1. If a regime is determined sanctions only serve to impoverish the population (poorest people suffer most)
    2. It creates refugees
    3. It increases organised crime as a regime uses drug cartels to buy oil and launder money even trade in drugs to boost funds
    4. In South Africa's case it forced an abrupt change of government which destroyed the country.... (basically the ANC were set up to fail if you think about it) They were discriminated against, in addition to destroying their own schools when government tried to ready black South Africans for governance... then handed a highly industrialised country and expected to run it. The west didn't give a **** whether South Africans live or die because democracy is all they care about, even when democracy results in death, violence and despair.

Sanctions are meant to foment unrest and discord among the general population thus leading to the government capitulating to demands or being overthown from within. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't but it's good to try that method before a military solution is implemented.

I think sanctions are used too readily, they are far more destructive than people realise, cause immense human misery, add to an already out of control refugee problem and in the end... when regime change do happen, the country is such a bad state that the new regime can do nothing but fail.

If we compare South Africa to a country like Cuba who did not capitulate under sanctions, then clearly Cuba is better off. It means that even with sanctions a country is better off moving its business underground than make the changes others want to enforce on them.

The reality is it's often sanctions or war and sanctions are obviously the preferable of the two. Cuba survives sanctions because sanctions put on a country that already has and is used to a crappy economy have very little effect on morale and don't do anything to the economy except keep it from growing which it wasn't going to do anyway. Cuba is a country we probably should have invaded and annexed long ago. Pope's war was limited to northern Mexico territories but there was a large contingent pushing for annexation of Cuba and the Yucatan peninsula along with Baja California as part of the end game and it's unfortunate their plan was not implemented.

    Truth...

Following the thwarted terrorist attacks in the Netherlands, Denmark and France, the EU is considering sanctions against Iranian citizens.
As the dpa agency said with reference to EU diplomatic circles, the sanctions should come into force this Wednesday and are part of the terrorist list adopted by the EU states. The list includes the freezing of assets and entry bans of certain unnamed persons.

This is nothing other than what the US Senate voted against Saudi Arabia and against the will of Trump for a known reason.

I am sure they did discuss it.....let me know when they implement something like they did with sanctions against Iran.

That truth you couldn't get around.

The US use sanctions with impunity, a good example is the thread floating around with the threats to sanction German companies who deal with Nordstream. It's based in greed, to steal Russia's export markets.

Also the US government is well aware of the destructive effects of sanctions, their purpose to weaken the enemy/competitors at all cost...

re your remarks on Cuba, typical American, you preach to the world about how morally superior you are but then believe you have a right to invade any country, which is despicable... yet you are unable to see this

You are going far afield in your anti sanction argument in an effort to obfuscate from the fact that they are the preferable alternative to war in many instances.
As for Pope's war and annexation of Cuba and the Yucatan peninsula you have to go back in time and have situational awareness regarding the geo politics of the day. Hundreds of years of Spanish rule had destabilized these countries and left them in complete disarray with no legitimate government and one coup after another. Much of the population of those two spots on the map was desirous of joining the union and let that be known in no uncertain terms. For many reasons mostly political ( fear they would be added to the south as slave states and disrupt the balance of power in congress) Pope chose not to add these areas to his annexation process and in retrospect at least in the case of Cuba, America would have been far better off if he had.
The situation then and even now with Cuba is far different from you criticism of America that we "believe we have a right to invade any country".

    Let me see... you tell me I'm going far afield then ramble on about Pope's war :lol: Pope' War is not relevant, my comparison to Cuba was based on;

    A Comparison between

    Country A
(country that caved in to Sanctions, South Africa and experienced abrupt and enormous change)

    And

    Country B
(one that didn't Cuba, had very little change)

Even though Cuba is extremely poor it is nowhere near as bad as South Africa for the simple reason the current regime in Cuba is holding the reigns very tightly (no to little change)... and in South Africa the rule of law is crumbling, the new democracy just not capable of enforcing the law, only one of a myriad of problems, such as corruption and mismanagement frequently accompanying a change in government/regime.

We sanction countries to change them but rarely consider whether this change will be for the better or the risk to those in-country. Look at what change did to Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan...

My Pope's war short essay was to counter your assertion that America thinks it has the right to invade any country.
What you fail to recognize about Cuba is their attempts under Castro and Che to spread communism and foment violent revolution throughout South America and their long history of murder and imprisonment of political prisoners. This behavior ceased in part due to sanctions which left then too poor to continue this military adventurism so yeah I'd say sanctions worked with Cuba.

What you fail to recognise is America's own violent history in South America, CIA assassinations, bribery, corruption and overthrow of government that do not align with US ideals. It's pretty much a case of the pot calling the kettle black

Not even close. What the CIA did or didn't do in South America was in large part if not in total to counter Soviet expansionisim carried on by their proxy Cuba which I previously expounded on. To compare this to Cortez and the genocide of the Aztecs and the subjugation and rule over a large part of a continent and it's people for hundreds of of years is apples oranges not pot kettle.

Ok I disagree that it was only about the Soviets, it was also about greed and American control. refer John Perkins Confessions of an Economic Hitman,

Don't care about the Aztec genocide it has little to do with sanctions

You make wild accusations on side issues and when I respond to and destroy them you say "I don't care" and it has nothing to do with sanctions. I'm getting bored of your game. Have a nice day.:)
