Trump doesn't respect women or the word "no". Especially when combined.

Pelosi responded to Trump's taunt. Reporting from CNN suggests that administration officials planned Trump's letter as an effort to force Pelosi's hand. So now we will wait and see the next reaction - whether Trump will delay the speech or deliver the speech at another venue.

As I have discussed multiple times at this point, it will be rather interesting to see how much control Trump can exercise over the crowd which attends this speech. It is a government event, not a campaign event, and as such, the First Amendment prevents the government from disallowing individuals based purely on their political leanings.

I, for one, look forward to a crowd which is mostly filled with people who disapprove of Trump (much like his national disapproval rating).

So you expect only folks at CNN to attend?

Of course. Unless you really believe your fake polls.

Well, at least she gave him plenty of notice (6 days). Were it me, and I'm a vindictive SOB like Trump, I would have delivered this letter to him as he was getting in his limo for the ride over to the Capitol next week....

Better yet, have him come to the empty chamber and have the letter tacked to the door (then bill him for the repair cost to the door for having a tack put in it)...

Democrats - They just don't play in the gutter...... yet....

I am with you there, but I understand their desire to appear like the adult in the room. They are trying to brand trump as ruling by temper tantrum, so they need to do what they can to appear more rational and measured.

Well, sure... as evidenced by the fact that she answered his 'head in the sand' letter promptly and clearly...

Still, a guy can dream, can't he??

There's only one way to end this Government shutdown, next week every TSA employee in America calls in sick and shuts down the nations airports and then people from around the world will not be able to fly to the Superbowl in Atlanta, including the players for the Patriots and the Rams. That'll be a HUGE! F you to the Government.

Nancy Pelosi continues to show her ineffectiveness as House Majority Leader, much like her previous tenure in 2010. I believe the President should have the speech be a private telecasting, with no invitations to anybody. It's an address to the Nation, it should be reflected as such.

It's not an address to the nation. According to the Constitution, it's an address to Congress.

    Seems fairly effective to me.

But I don't think Trump does the private telecast thing. His Oval Office address got fewer viewers than Pelosi/Schumer, it did not move the public support meter in his direction at all, and he had no audience to cheer him on.

To be fair, he can deliver a speech in just about any way that he chooses so long as he provides a written address to the Congress.

I don't think they'd have enough time to train and implement the Military to make people comfortable to fly. Maybe the Air Traffic Controllers should walk also. Would be amazing to watch it happen.

The ATC walked, and Regain brought in ATCs from the Air Force and the Navy. And there was no major problems. And bring comfortable and be safe are different things.

Effective in 'showing up' Trump, but not effective in actually resolving the problem. I do recall Reagan making the WH speech after the Soviets downed an innocent aircraft. Teddy Roosevelt had his radio talks. Trump can easily broadcast his message as loud as he wants, and he can address it as a 'State of the Union'. It need not be to Congress.

He can't call it SOTU if he intends to make it into one of his campaign circus shows.

Trump will just hold it somewhere else and news agencies will line up to broadcast it. Trump is the adult in the room and nancy is the child. Nothing new here.

I do wonder why Democrats in our gov't are always trying to destroy it or trying to seize power and turn us into a socialist hellhole. That is the real question. Why are they so unpatriotic?

Now that is true, I think. As a State of the Union, it is a government event. And Government events can not disallow members of the public solely because of their political beliefs.

In contrast, the reason he does so many campaign rallies is because he CAN control the political alignments of the people who attend. That's why I would love to see him give his state of the union in a another venue where the public is invited to attend. A full 55%+ would be absolutely opposed to everything he says and would let him know it.

The law is clear, the POTUS is invited to present the SOTU to Congress upon the request of Congress. His reaction to ignore the Speaker, and the law, and then continue preparations to make a SOTU presentation regardless shows his childish bullying behavior in reaction to both his speech being held hostage (in spite of him holding nearly a million Americans and the economy hostage), and the rule of law when administered by a woman. Giving a SOTU speech when the government is partially shutdown just doesn't make sense, and I think standing by that decision makes Nancy the adult in the room. Trump played the shutdown card, it didn't work, so now he needs to grow up, be a President and come up with some way other than a shutdown to accomplish what he wants.
