The Libertarian perspective on this is that, as long as it's not being imposed by the government we as consumers still have choices (at least theoretically). Although financial institutions are developing insidious workarounds like credit score ratings, with criteria selectively chosen to benefit them. (Like you have to purposelessly go into debt to be able to have a good credit score for borrowing if you need to in the future) And they've gotten all the financial institutions using the same system.
