Earth's global surface temperatures in 2018 were the fourth warmest since 1880, according to independent analyses by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Global temperatures in 2018 were 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit (0.83 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, according to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. Globally, 2018's temperatures rank behind those of 2016, 2017 and 2015. The past five years are, collectively, the warmest years in the modern record.

“2018 is yet again an extremely warm year on top of a long-term global warming trend,” said GISS Director Gavin Schmidt.

Since the 1880s, the average global surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). This warming has been driven in large part by increased emissions into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases caused by human activities, according to Schmidt.

Weather dynamics often affect regional temperatures, so not every region on Earth experienced similar amounts of warming. NOAA found the 2018 annual mean temperature for the contiguous 48 United States was the 14th warmest on record.

Warming trends are strongest in the Arctic region, where 2018 saw the continued loss of sea ice. In addition, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets continued to contribute to sea level rise. Increasing temperatures can also contribute to longer fire seasons and some extreme weather events, according to Schmidt.

“The impacts of long-term global warming are already being felt — in coastal flooding, heat waves, intense precipitation and ecosystem change,” said Schmidt.

NASA’s temperature analyses incorporate surface temperature measurements from 6,300 weather stations, ship- and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations.

I live in Phoenix so no matter how hot it gets for you guys it will never be as hot as my normal.

If you experience an eight degree rise you still have a long way to go to 120.

If I'm at 120 and it goes to 128 well, it's not really any difference.

By the way, we farm just fine down here in 120 degree heat and animals do just fine also.

    the real problem is people.

if we have less people there will be less people caused global warming.

thats why democrats wanna kill babies.

    get with the program

Democrats want to murder people to reduce global warming? Can you point me to a legislative bill sponsored by Democrats or even just a statement made by a Democrat (or anyone really) in which this was proposed?

I read today that the UK Met office gives a 10% probability of exceeding the 1.5C warming target by 2023.

Ralph.. Andrew... Alexandria OC... Dang near every SME at Davos... All liberal economists... You... Oh wait, you didn't actually write legislation, you just entirely endorsed "pervasive transformative economic change" which frankly isn't even a teensy bit camouflaged version of the same conversation.

Or, we could look more globally, and check out the rantings of the current IPCC leadership board, the Hansen guy, the efforts of the People's Republic of China... I mean, there's a list. I suppose that because there are so many, you might not know all of them, but to not "know" any of them? Unlikely.

After 12 inches of rain and waking up to 35 degrees weather this morning with snow capped mountains I'm asking the global warming bigot Jerry Brown...What can we do to stop this climate change ???

That sounds pretty ominous.. 10% you say... So 9 times out of 10 we won't. right?

I heard evacuation orders for the state were under review... well, except for those super rich enclaves like Malibu or Laguna, or W LA.... they get to stay, and enjoy not having everyone else crowd them.... But then, I heard.. Gavin's boyfriend lives in Chico... and well that put an end to it....

I'm not aware of any legislation or statements from Democrats (or anyone for that matter) that have proposed such a thing.

I've also never advocated for murder as solution to climate change myself. I'm not really sure where that accusation comes from to be frank.

I definitely support transformative economic change. Our current economic model is very dependent on a resource that causes long term harm to the environment. It's also finite and will run out. For each year that goes by in which the current system becomes ever more dependent on this resource the risk of total and catastrophic economic collapse increases. I prefer an economic system that is sustainable, low risk, and makes everyone especially the United States filthy stinking rich.

I'm confused here. Are you saying that the IPCC, Hansen, and China have seriously considered murder as a viable solution to climate change? I'd give you China for free, but can you present the IPCC document or a statement from Hansen in which they made these claims?

Hmm, so the 'warmists' cherry pick again the data that supports their Narrative & ignore the plethora of 'inconvenient' data...

(the Vostok ice core samples obviously inconvenient as well) https://andthentheresphysics.wordpress.com/2017/06/18/what-does-the-vostok-ice-core-tell-us/

But they are 'important Scientists' so they must be objective & right... 'If Climate change is real, why do Scientists fudge data'
    https://www.investors.com/politics/commentary/new-climategate-created-as-researcher-hides-data/

Even "peer reviewed" studies are woefully fallible & subjective, so I am not lending credence to my internet 'sources' any more than the oppositions. I do tend to believe that it is rather egocentrically inane of man to aggrandize their role in all of this...

More specifically this article appears to be focused on Travis Rieder who is an "ethicist" that believes (or at least poses the question) that the best way to protect your kids is to not have them. Note that this is not even remotely close to the same thing as murder. And I didn't see anywhere that he was advocating that this be forced upon people. If the guy doesn't want to have a large family because he feels like this would put his family in more peril then who am I to tell him he isn't allowed to make that choice?

I did see that he thinks 4C of warming will make the Earth largely uninhabitable for humans. I take issue with that. Earth's carrying capacity may be lower because of it, but it certainly won't be uninhabitable. Anyway, he uses this false narrative to paint a picture that the Earth will be post apocalyptic and then challenges his audience to consider whether having children under such a scenario is right or wrong. I guess it's likened to genetic counseling in which you learn that you have a near 100% chance of passing on a debilitating genetic disorder to your hypothetical future child. Would you proceed on with conception knowing that you would force a torturous lifestyle upon your child?

Anyway, this is definitely not anything like advocating murder as a solution to climate change.

It doesn't sound very ominous to me. Correct. Given what we know about how the climate system behaves if you had 10 Earths with near identical initial conditions then only 1-in-10 would reach 1.5C by 2023. I'm not sure why the probabilities were for 2030, 2040, etc. They didn't report those.

I know right! A week of extremely cold weather in northern states totally disproves the empirical data showing an overall trend of warming.

The amount of warming being experienced across the planet is not distributed evenly. The arctic regions are experiencing a warming at roughly 2-3 times the rate experienced along the equator that should be terrifying for you because the arctic region is basically like a gigantic air condition system for the entire planet. If the arctic regions are unable to actively cool the rest of the planet due to it already being warmer, then the rest of the planet has no where for the extra warmth to go.

2023 is only 4 years away.

Put another way, if there is a 10% chance of exceeding the 1.5 degree mark by 2023, do you think the probability of reaching the 1.5 degree mark by 2024 is larger or smaller than 10%?

Climate Change is also predicted to make certain areas of the planet wetter and to make percipitation much more concentrated. So, in California, you will be more likely to have longer periods of drought followed by periods of excessive rain.

But you are cool with massive droughts and wildfires followed by mudslides?
