It's not exactly practical to expect the President to spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to use the security he is by law required to use.

As usual, all you have to do is change the names and parties of the individuals involved and Andrew Jacksons response completely flips on its head.

That's something I've always respected him for, but I wish he'd funnel it back to the people. Say like... a small business owner, or a family who lost everything in a fire.

    Oh fer....

It's nice of him but really come the **** on. It's like .01% of what his fortune should be earning if he's really worth that much. He's not some great altruist here.

He's a piker really, many men as rich as he give lots more. It was Carnagie who said that it was actually more fun to give away his fortune than to make it.

On the other hand, he has funnelled taxpayer money directly into his own pocket by going to his own commercial properties so often. And he has also directed his own campaign to spend money at his properties.

    https://www.propublica.org/article/political-and-taxpayer-spending-at-trump-properties-16-1-million

As president he makes a small gesture of donating his salary, while at the same time directing MUCH more money into his pocket from other sources. It is a token gesture that he uses to mask his corruption from his blind followers.

Edit - and by the way, a lot of people with Trump's wealth donate WAY more than he does. Way more. Obama, whose net worth is a tiny fraction of Trump's, gave away more than $1 million to charity during his presidency. So actually not far off what Trump is doing.

Are you going to praise Obama for his generosity? Because he is proportionally MUCH more generous than Trump.

This is still primarily about (technically legal) tax avoidance. Trumps actual Presidential salary is $1 (because he can’t legally be paid nothing) and he could have left it at that. The “donation” element is entirely for show, just shifting numbers from one government budget to another, and it isn’t necessary for the Trump to receive all-but no salary.

Very wealthy individuals like Trump commonly have their finances managed in a way that there receive near-zero income to avoid income tax, instead living on capital gains or long-term loans backed by investments assets. If Trump have received the income of the Presidential wage, it would probably have ended up costing him more in tax than it was worth to him and he obviously couldn’t use any of the common tricks used by executives in private companies to mitigate that. I suspect this would be one of the reasons he has continued to resist publishing nay of his tax returns.

Begs the question as to why the BLOTUS has not donated a single dime to his precious "wall"?

He should repay the $87,000,000 he has currently spent on golf outings and keep the government salary instead. Or repay the billions his shutdowns have cost the country. It’s like a logger cutting down a forest and then planting a single tree and his supporters go SEEEEEE, he’s so great!

    Such a solid guy

Oh we hit a 22 trillion dollar national debt today.
    Go trump
    Maga!

Trump said there were bad people on both sides (absolutely true) then came out following days and categorically condemned the far right, no pass there.

But if you say legitimately anti-semetic things with a D next to your name you can give a bullshit apology and it's all good.

Gosh, what a guy! His personal wealth has increased from 3 billion dollars to 10 billion dollars in one year if you believe his speech to the UN. Obviously, he has used his office to make billions of dollars and his "charitable" donations are a drop in the bucket, a ruse perpetrated by an expert con-man. Just sayin'. He is about as solid as mush.
