John Wayne airport likely to be renamed

    LA Times article today on new effort to replace the old movie star's name from an airport in Orange county due to past racism\ homophobia opinions by John Wayne. Interviews in Playboy magazine in the 1970's are cited.

    I am using an iPad so can't post today's article but it can be found in today's newspaper website.

    John Wayne doesn't represent the Orange county of the 21st century.

    Any thoughts?

    It doesn't bother me one bit who anyone names an airport after or a street or anything like that. John Wayne was nothing more than an actor who brought millions enjoyment watching his movies. He'll always be the Duke to me and I'll watch his movies time and time again. I watch them for entertainment enjoying the good acting he performed. His political views are irrelevant.

    If I took every actor's political views into consideration on what I watch, I wouldn't be watching many programs or movies, that is for sure.

    John Wayne was a Racist Homophobic Bigot.

    He was actually a Horrible Actor and the Worst Ever to receive an Oscar.

    His performances were laughably wooden (and ran the entire gamut of emotion from A to B).

    The airport never should've been named after him in the first place.

    Yeah...I never understood his fame. He played the same character in every film, which was likely himself.

    Personally, I agree with the last paragraph of the article..

    But the most appropriate choice might be the one proposed by those tourism officials in 2008. Just call it Orange County Airport.

    I like that idea for all named airports.. they should be locations.

    LaGuardia can be New York North, JFK can be New York South
    Dulles can be DC West, Reagan National can be DC Central, BWI already works...

    No kidding.

    The guy came across as dumb as a stump. Like he had been kicked in the head too many times filming Westerns in the 1930s.

    I normally really dislike the aberrations people use on public figures names, but this one, this one gives me fits of snickers.....

    It was originally called the Orange county airport until Republicans wanted it named after Wayne when he died

    The airport needs to be renamed with someone that has had their o-ring busted. Jussie international? Broke back international? I’m not sure but an icon of straight white male testosterone isn’t tolerable.

    Aside from the prejudice Wayne espoused Orange county is going through a transition of denouncing past sins so to speak. The John Birch society is mentioned in the article.
