Sen. McSally, ex-Air Force pilot, says officer raped her

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Martha McSally, the first female Air Force fighter pilot to fly in combat, said Wednesday that she was sexually assaulted by a superior officer, and later, when she tried to talk about it to military officials, she "felt like the system was raping me all over again."

The Arizona Republican, a 26-year military veteran, made the disclosure at a Senate hearing on the military's efforts to prevent sexual assaults and improve the response when they occur. Lawmakers also heard from other service members who spoke of being sexually assaulted and humiliated while serving their country.

McSally said she did not report being raped because she did not trust the system, and she said she was ashamed and confused. She said she was impressed and grateful to the survivors who came forward to help change the system. She was in the ninth class at the Air Force Academy to allow women, and said sexual harassment and assault were prevalent. Victims mostly suffered in silence, she said. . . .

As much as I oppose the MeToo folks as criminally brained liars
who knew what the casting couch was about -
I do feel differently about this case.

The Air Force Academy is renowned for White, Christian, Male orientation
And Hollywood is not the military that does Hollywood defend "us".

AIR FORCE. Must be White, Christian and Male or Second Class.
The Air Force, as much as I hate to admit it, needs AFFIRMATIVE ACTION to end their 'good ole boy' mentality. Starting at the Academy!

REMEMBER a woman landed her A-10 Warthog without hydraulics, on cable/pulley systems alone. Most fail such attempts when so damaged.

What someone believes and practices on their own, is no concern to me.

But, when representing the U.S.A., they do lose some personal "beliefs" in action.

The fact that you say that aspiring actresses knew what the casting couch was about describes EXACTLY what is wrong with our entire system. You imply that somehow it is OK tp sexually assault an aspiring actress,THEY SHOULD EXCPECT IT???but it is verboten for the military, what a double standard!!!The law should be the law and everyone has the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.Equal justice to all.

    C'est Moi!

That's why Brooke Shields' mother was at her side and known as "controlling".
    To put it another way,
Khashoggi knew what he was walking into and did it anyway.

Very regrettable situation, but this is why you need to go public soon after. Now there is no realistic chance of prosecution as there is only her word.

Have to say, the casting couch works in the military too, just as much as it does in Hollywood, senior guys think the affections of younger girls are a perk of the job which they're entitled to through their rank, younger girls hook up with them as they're in positions of authority and it sometimes benefits their careers. If this lady was raped then she should go to the police about it because otherwise a shadow of suspicion hangs above everyone she ever served with.

Using affirmative action to fill positions of fighter pilots to fly, and maintenance workers to maintain jets worth tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Only the most qualified (and most loyal) should be hired for those positions, and if that means that a section of the populace gets left out--that's too fricking bad. In case you haven't noticed, there has been a rash of crashes of military jets recently. I would venture to say that the reason for this is the practice of using affirmative action candidates instead of the most qualified candidates. The last military jet crash I can remember was a crash over Japan a few months ago. Five military personnel died in that crash and several planes were lost. Turns out the pilot was an Arab minority and was probably hired through affirmative action.
Hiring people on the basis of their skin color rather than on the basis of meritocracy will be the downfall of civilization, and that is just around the corner. We are not all equal in our capabilities. To pretend that we are is naïve, stupid, and THE biggest lie that has ever been perpetrated on mankind.

Presumably it's not so long ago that she couldn't remember the day or location or people around and her best friend wouldn't say she didnt remember anything. Not quite that long ago.

Regrettable. Over 26 years ago, at least things have changed for the better I hope since then. I personally did not see that kind of behavior during my time in the USAF.

Military craft that crash are by far flown by white males. So much for your theory.

Weak. Perhaps that's because most pilots are white males.

Exactly so you'd expect that accidents would be racially proportional wouldn't you? Well a racist wouldn't, but most people would.

Why do you suppose it is so common for victims of sexual assault to remain silent, to avoid going up through the chain of command, whether civilian or military?

I watched the lady's testimony yesterday, and she noted that she felt that she had been raped all over again by the system. Something to consider IMO.

I would remind the Senator that her allegations have an associated responsibility. Will she, now, name her rapist? If not, why not? No mileage there for her? Likely. It would be relatively cliché now as the story line was already widely viewed in one of the seasons of House of Cards.. Ironic...

One of the cautions, at the time, about allowing women into the ranks was that nature was going to eventually cause problems, like this. And whether it was consensual, or inappropriate (likely a higher ranking officer in the same chain of command) or criminal rape, the folks who argued against including women into the ranks was one of the reasons acts like this went unreported. Women were more interested in being included than demonstrating that the credible reasons for their exclusion were valid at the time. Clearly, that boat has sailed. Now, it's women officers also doing the abusing.

I can't tell you if what McSally said is true or not. Given the history though, it is likely that it is. But, her reference to it now seems more politically motivated than not, which seems to only further reinforce the idea that her silence was both an obstruction of justice, and a disservice to her service and her branch.

That's all very regrettable, but we cannot lower standards of evidence for the accused out of compassion for alleged victims. She really should have gone public immediately.

Just curious if you ever served in the military?

The system needs to be greatly improved, but there is too much inertia. Whether in reforming police activity or this matter of sexual assault, the system protects itself.

Apparently the USAF is not as bad as USN with its notorious Tailhook fraternity.

Senator Gillibrand made an effort to reform this a few years back, but she was unable. Too political.

What the USAF brass offered in response to her testimony yesterday is just plain old-fashioned lip service, to be consumed by the gullible.

I agree with all of that, and there definitely should be reform, but her case is regrettably too far gone.

    Even she acknowledges that.

The purpose of her statements yesterday, IMO, was to refresh the public dialogue. She is not seeking revenge or anything like that, she simply wants the truth to prevail.

I can understand her silence while she was in. Being young, she was more interested in a career, and just had to **** in order to survive. Not with sexual assault, but having served I can easily understand that motive. The nice way it's put in the military is "Cooperate and graduate".

When you really think about this, the question becomes, does decency have a place in a process that requires folks to be killers. I know, we spend an awful lot of time ignoring that little feature of combat aviation, but it is, never the less, the only part that matters when our country is at war. When folks actively try to ignore that aspect, obviously, it creates both conflict and problems. I am not trying to justify what allegedly happened to her, I'm simply pointing out that in an environment where folks are being asked to become killers, the social niceties rapidly get stripped away.

Fighter jets used to be entirely flown by white males. Ships were captained by white males; and you rarely ever heard of fighter jets crashing or ships ramming other ships. This phenomenon has increased since white males have been sidelined. Also, jet mechanic positions are increasingly being filled through affirmative action hiring. It is imperative that pilots and mechanics are loyal to the US, highly competent and hired based on merit not color of skin.

What do you propose to break the White Christian Male Dynasty
of the USAF in service and the academy?

    Thank You.

BTW Does the Navy still allow non college graduates to pilot
or only college graduates as Army, & Air Force ?

    Gracias

There is a dark side to that, for another discussion.
