I wouldn’t mind if the schools gave paid visits to similarly qualified White athletes.........the discrimination is real

 

Why don't you get that merit isn't based on grades and scores alone, although they are very important. Leadership skills, initiative, compelling essays, overcoming obstacles and myriad other factors will always be part of college admissions.

The kid who could afford tutors and college prep had a GPA of 3.9 and scored a 1400 on the SAT (after parents paid for three attempts) is no more deserving than the kid who worked a part time job, helped raise younger siblings while in foster care, maintained a 3.7 GPA and scored a 1360 on the first try because he never heard about the advantages of "superscore" and wouldn't have been able to afford it.

These are both high scores and both kids can do the work at the college but scores alone don't tell the whole story of the kid's ability or trajectory. By using scores alone, wealthier kids tend to have an advantage because studies show that scores increase with economic status. That hardly sounds like a strict meritocracy and it hardly sounds "fair", if that's the word that you'd like to use.

 

I don't really have a problem of parents of means give say a ten year endowment to the college of say a million a year for ten years and in return say the next two generations of young adults have an open enroll should they so choose to attend but they get treated and get graded as any other student, they have to make it on their own. That endowment pays for LOTS of other students to be able to attend hopefully at a lower tuition and the endowment stipulates. Or they build a new wing onto a building, or a theater, or some other useful asset to the university. I have lots of issues with college tuitions in general and how the government helps to drive those up with it's policies but that is for another thread.

That being said the bribery is what is soooooo egregious. Why didn't they go the other legal route and get proper recognition for the good deed and the kid in school. Why go this "black market" route which violated federal laws it appears?

If she had just gone to the college ADMINISTRATORS and said "Here is a $500,000 endowment, grant, whatever you want to call it, and btw how about admitting my daughter and I will of course pay the correct tution and do not give her any special grades she succeeds or fails on her own"
