They stopped building them because they couldn't afford to keep losing money on them. They were building them because they had no choice. The President allowed them to make decisions that would keep Ford and GM alive.

Obama's CAFE standards were putting the domestic auto industry into peril.

In the end, what kind of cars do the public want to buy?

Don't hurt yourself trying to straddle both sides of the issue. :)
There will always be a market for low priced cars.
But Trump has made it very difficult to build those cars in the US.
The solution of course is not to build them in the US.

Trump is mentally ill, and even his cult following knows it well.

Lets just nationalize all of them.
I'm sure if you ask him, Trump would tell you he would do a better job than the auto CEO's

And yet here we are in the middle of a thread where the right is crying about losing a few thousand jobs because of Trump and complaining that Obama saved millions.
Hard to figure you guys out.

GM has paid back all it owed the US Government. But in the process of selling shares of GM stocks, the US Government lost over 10 Billion Dollars. Fact

When's the last time government became a purchaser of your assets in a 363 sale to give you back the assets of your ch11 debtor in posession, encumbrance free, while stiffing your bond holders in ch7 liquidation?

I'm not straddling. I consider myself an expert on the industry and the regulations that have harmed it.

You clearly are not very informed on the subject, and think just throwing out your opinion is a sufficient argument.

BTW, this is what Ford said on the subject of small cars.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/ford-stop-making-all-passenger-cars-except-mustang-n869256

“We’re going to feed the healthy parts of our business and deal decisively with the areas that destroy value,” Hackett said during a conference call. “We’re starting to understand what we need to do and making clear decisions there.”

Car makers always tell you they build what you want. That's why they spend a ton of money guiding you towards the most profitable cars. :)
If you want to compete in the car market you need low cost.
Trump has destroyed that model with steel tariffs, tariffs on Chinese electronics/parts and low cost labor in Mexico. Now he is saying we should export more and our trading partners should buy more. Ain't gonna happen.
This is the price we pay for protectionism. Remember when everyone said industries downstream from steel would suffer from tariffs? Well, this is it.

Obama the dictator did what again? He had to be the dictator to do what you claim he did. He sure retains his cadre of sycophants.

Difference is US taxpayers bailed out GM to save American jobs not to have them send jobs to China.

Apparently Edison failed 1000 times to create the light bulb.

Apparently Trump is not expected to have any failures.

Edison invented the concrete house. How often to you see any of those?

Well you gotta hand it to Trump. He's trying his best to bankrupt them again.
What can I do to screw up the US automakers he says.
Lets put a tariff on steel and electronics assembled in China.
Then we can make their low cost Mexico labor more expensive.
Then we can put tariffs on the cars like the Envision imported from China and eliminate those profits.
Of course China will add tariffs on our small cars killing that market and we now can't compete in the global market.
Good work agent orange Putin is proud of you.

The rest of the taxpayers weren't responsible for the jobs of GM employees. GM should have been liquidated along with the wall street banks that failed and AIG

Do you know how much of a vehicles cost relates to the metal that goes into building it? And how is Trump responsible for low labor costs in Mexico?

Because of your friends the globalists, we've been exporting jobs by the millions for many years.

The UAW, EPA, NHTSA, and other regulatory agencies, along with pathetic trade deals, is the reason Detroit has a hard time making money on small cars. Ford and GM used to be the largest auto manufacturers in the world. Why aren't they now?

Not everything wrong in the World is attributable to Donald Trump. It's insane to allow people to convince you of that.

Why should I waste time proving the same thing, when I've already shown the list if FOS?

Sure Trump can have failures. But he shouldn't be shaming companies who are trying not to fail. Keeping unproductive plants open to save jobs puts an entire organization at risk.

As for concrete houses - they are the gold standard in the caribbean islands as they withstand hurricanes much better than any other building material.
