Does it matter anymore? A few years ago, scientists debated the "tipping point" of global warming. The general thinking was that 400 ppm (parts per million) of Atmospheric Carbon was the tipping point, the point of no return. It was thought that once 400 ppm of Atmospheric Carbon was reached, the planet would be unable to manage the build up and nothing we did would stop the slide to planetary disaster or human extinction.. Currently, we are at 405 ppm. We are experiencing rising oceans, monstrous fires, drought, unpredictable weather fluctuations, and more frequent and deadlier hurricanes.

The Green New Deal is an admirable attempt to bring the advancing slide to global Armageddon but if scientific data are right (it certainly seems they are) it's too little too late, because America is not the only industrialized nation on earth. China and India are far worse contributors to A.C. and, like America, are driven by monetary goals. So, even if America adopted the GND in full (It can't and won't) it wouldn't change much. It's now a political football with the Luddites vs. the Alarmists. The Luddites scream "socialist plot" while Alarmists scream, whatever they are screaming at the Luddites.

Reality is a bitch, but that's it in a nutshell. I am neither a Luddite nor an Alarmist. If anything, at this point, I am a fatalist - it is what it is so love your family and friends, enjoy the impressive sunsets, and have another beer. But what about America? Any proposals from my mouth would be welcomed with angst and dismay by both sides. So keep your diesel trucks, SUVs, toxic policies, and thank God nobody has to sacrifice anything. Where I am personally is that the argument is over, QED, end of story, and the fat lady has sung. I'm lucky, I'm old and by the time the whole thing falls apart, I'll be long gone. I do feel for the young people though. I guess this is why they want the GND.

So when I was a little kiddo, way back in 1976, we were told that we were going to have another ice age.

    No ice age.

    Good thread.

    Thank you for posting.

But the Dems have repeatedly revealed their massive hypocrisy and lack of concern for the issue as well.

The oligarchy figures they're rich/powerful enough to weather any storm, literally in this case.

They plan on it, live for it.

They bend everything to their presumed safety, power and wealth.

It's every oligarchist looking out for #1.

    Democrat and Republican alike.

    But good thread nonetheless.

    No you can't.

Just to build a small dam on a small river takes about 10 years of planing and environmental studies. Then you have to design it, design the turbine which have to be custom built according to the dam specification, they're all unique, which will also take a few year and is highly precise work so you can't have any joe blow build one. Add to that about five years to build it and then a couple more for the design and construction of the powerlines. And all this necessitates engineers specialized in that type of work which isn't all that popular in university presently and where there's a shortage of qualified ressources.

Compare this with your moon mission...

They had aeronautical engineer in surplus in the 60's as this was quite popular at the time and the aeronautical industry was in full swing. They also benefited from Von Braun and the paperclip scientist to help them design the rocket. And it was a single use rocket, not something that has to provide you energy 24/7, 365 days a year with people depending on it.

While spectacular, the moon mission is on a much smaller scale than even the smallest hydro project.

And before you go all "poppycock" once again, I've been working in the hydro industry for the past 20 years.

I just checked Florida home prices. Here we get maybe 1.5 million for what they sell for $450,000. And no worry about Gore flooding. LOL

What nonsense, President Kennedy! There is no way we could put a man on the moon and bring him back in less than a decade! Just to develop a rocket capable of escaping Earth's gravity would take double that time. If it's even possible at all!

Again the moon landing is a piece of cake by comparison. You're comparing what was in essence a minor engineering project Involving a relative handful of people with rewiring the entire continent manufacturing and retrofitting 10s of millions of solar panels and covering half the continent in wind generators and worse finding enough rare earths to manufacture enough batteries to serve as back up for all that stuff while simultaneously building and maintaining 20 to 30k miles of high speed rail lines and dismantling thousands of oil and gas pipelines and generating plants. It would be easier to build that bridge to Hawaii.

It is today. Not in 1961. Just like 60 years from now, zero emissions will be child's play. But keeping 90 year old AOC from bragging about how right she was about her GND when she was just a kid.... that will be hard...

We could all go to the mountains. Let Global Warming take it's course. Let the world economy collapse eventually and hide in fear that a neighbor will steal the last gallon of rain water you managed to stash away

    OR

    We can fix Global Warming.

    Choices... choices....

It is unfortunate, but I have to agree. There are too many Democrats who talk more than they act. And when the moment of truth is on hand, the donor class sets the rules.

Yes it is today not 1961. That means the project is infinitely more difficult today than it would have been then. If she's right about the 12 year prediction - she's not but that's a different argument - AOC won't be bragging in ninety years cause will all gonna die way before then.

Step one: Bury the car. It's the only way to stop the impending ice age.

    Think outside the box.

If it takes 500 people10 years to build a dam, maybe it could take 1 year for 5 thousand people to build that dam.

Of course aeronautical engineer was very popular! For heaven's sake.... we were going to the moon! Who wouldn't want to be part of that! Once we decided to go, there was no stopping us! Just like now. Who wouldn't want to be part of saving the planet! Once we take off inventing, building and implementing green technology, there is no stopping us.

You think there aren't a hundred Von Braun's out there waiting for an opportunity?

The right acts as if this were the first time in history in which we confront a new urgent problem. We have done this before. Many times. WW2, the moon, Financial Crisis, Manhattan Project, .... We do it! We innovate. We develop technology. We come up with new ways of doing things. It's exciting!

Technology won't stop us. Science won't stop us. But narrow minded politicians and their narrow-minded followers could stand in our way.

And believe me, there were just as many narrow-minded people back in the 60s as there are now. Those who could not conceive that we could possibly come up with a new way of doing something like... building a rocket or....a dam.... that would take less time and be more efficient, if we put our minds to it. Despite the fact that we have shown again and again that we can!

This is not the first time we take on something like this. And it will certainly not be the last time.
