https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019...c-cars-considerably-worse-climate-diesel-cars
According to the study directed by Christoph Buchal of the University of Cologne, published by the Ifo Institute in Munich last week, electric vehicles have "significantly higher CO2 emissions than diesel cars." That is due to the significant amount of energy used in the mining and processing of lithium, cobalt, and manganese, which are critical raw materials for the production of electric car batteries.
I have nothing against electric cars as long as the taxpayers do not have buy them

Liberals who want to go green should pay 100% of the cost for an EV, a windmill or solar panels

There is already a thread debunking this.

Renewable energy components in general require oil for mining, manufacturing, and transport. In addition, they have low energy returns and quantity. But they together with all available energy sources will be used because of limits to growth.

That means in the long term the global economy faces both increasing ecological damage plus the effects of diminishing returns.

That thread is now locked. With this one I can respond to Bowerbird's reply to me.

Of course China being a totalitarian country can mandate anything it wants and when you have a country that just a short while ago had most people riding bikes everywhere, it's not hard to get rid of the cars they have now. But Asia doesn't appear to be as green as Bowerbird thinks.

I could tell by the sensationalist title alone (Somebody is shocked/furious/terrified/etc) that this would be some right-wing article. I will also tell you that, contrary to the GOP's ardent desires, Earth's welfare is all of our responsibility.

And what happens to all those zillions of EVs and their batteries when one or all of them run out, or become too expensive to mine? Answers on a messageboard please? My answer? Why, we simply go back to diesel cars. Hold that thought!!??

Again, I have nothing against electric cars

They have certain advantages over the internal combustion engine

As long as consumers buy them for practical reasons and at fair msrket value without taxpsyer subsidies mind

But liberal activists in and around government want to mandate EV’s for everyone based on their wacky fear of man-made global warming

Its as if in the days when automobiles were just primative contraptions libs shot all the horses to persuade the public to switch to cars

You are correct that “rightwingers” aka conservatives are promoting the story

But I doubt if the academics in germany who did the research are conservatives

There is only one real solution

Move closer to work and take the Bike or go by foot
OR find a job closer to home

I bet half of the western world is capable of doing this if they tryd
But it requires real sacrifice and nobody wants to do that so they Just sell you some shitty compromise to make you feel better

I moved 160km and got a job 2km away
While used to drive 100km a day
In a little country barely 300km at the longest point

There is a liberal professor at the University of Texas who thinks a better solution is for a virus to wipe out 90% of mankind

Nor do I, but everyone seems to be so obsessed with the idea they're the answer to climate change they're not thinking about the downsides - which, incidentally, include explosion in the event of collisions, and all those zillions of EV cars on scrap-heaps when IC engines have to be reinstated.

First of all ...
For me, an EV is currently no alternative to a car with an internal combustion engine, whether petrol or diesel.
That's because the range with a battery charge is significantly lower ... but more importantly, the recharge time is gigantic!
If my gasoline or diesel tank is empty, then I drive to the gas station and refuel in 10min and can continue ... at an EV only after a few hours!

As for the study you mentioned, you're right ... yes Mac, I can tell you're right, if you're right :-D .... because these, I'll call them "additional costs", are often concealed! In addition to the things you mentioned, these materials are also not available endless ... at least as much as oil isn't, rather lesser!

Even though I am pro-environmentalist, I regularly quarrel with the hardcore activists when these people want to tell me that everything is clean, when electricity generated by solar, wind, or hydropower ... and I then give them exactly that Give arguments that you have listed here!

What you have to take into account in addition to CO2 in the diesel, but is the burden of fine dust. That is high ...

I dont consider CO2 to be a pollutant

Though the environmentalists do

Life as we know it would not rxist without CO2

Nor would our life be as rich without fossil fuel

Electric motors require less maintance that IC engines and produce a lot of torque so no multi gear transmission is needed

So the only limit is the battery

Liberals dont seem to care about the engineering details

They have become radicalized by the doomsday predictions of the climate scientists and closed their brain to any new data

It's old news that electric cars cause more pollution than gas cars but it doesn't fit the global warming narrative so its constantly swept under the rug. This is the main reason i hate the AGW hoax. Not only does it take attention off real pollution but in many cases it actually exacerbates the problem.

China and india are heavy pollutors

If china is interested in EVs they are planning to build them in china and sell them in the US through their newest front corp General Motors

OK ... that man-made climate change and global warming ... including those reasons ... is a fairy tale for you, I knew that before.

Just ... discussing this topic with people like you is completely pointless. You are ... as you can read above .. yes not even clear that it is the amount of CO2 in the Atmosphere is important and it is not about the component itself. Sorry and with all sincerity, the Enlightener, I certainly do not play here. ;-)

I think we agree that electric cars are not ready to replace the IC engine

Thats probably as much as can be expected considering our opposing views on CO2 and global warming

All energy is "bad" for the environment. Energy is changing something from one form to another and harnessing the byproducts to do work. You can't NOT impact the environment by doing this.

Making batteries is a dirty business that we have largely outsourced to China who is willing to take on that cost. That isn't sustainable. Battery technology needs to be pushed to be made cleaner. Diesel is a good option. But don't talk like America is trying to embrace it and people are stopping you. You aren't arguing for diesel, just against EV's. Which is dumb because gasoline powered cars are WORSE than both.

I get 115mpg, and the fat liberals claim I use more carbon than a car because I have to take more trips to the grocery store.

Calculating the carbon impact of dirty manufacture on batteries for and EV is like punishing motorcyclists for fat liberals, it is total bull crap.

Oil production is heavily subsidized and so are combustion engine cars, so your argument doesn't make sense. If what you want is both to compete on level ground, you have to end ALL subsidies to both. That includes the billions upon billion we subsidize through the oil production and automotive industry. If you are all for that, then great. But NOTHING is subsidy free and that includes gasoline powered cars.

I am not arguing agaonst electric cars

I’m against public tax dollar subsidies for alternative energy

And we should make lead acid batteries in the US as long as we are using them
