I will totally support a war against Iran if Chicken Hawk trump and his sycophants are on the front lines.

We lost the peace in Iraq because we left. Exactly the same as Vietnam. EXACTLY the same.

We need to try to stay out of wars but once we are in one the war protesters need to shut the hell up, they are wrong regardless of the mortality of the war..
The US needed to keep lots of troops in Vietnam and Iraq until the nations new government was established and stable.

If for instance we invaded Iran we need to keep troops there for decades or until it was a stable and productive member of the international community.
This isn't a 10 year in and out kind of thing.
It's a long term investment even if you havr buyers remorse..

In Vietnam and Iraq it was probably bad ideas to get involved. But once we were involved it was an even worse idea to cut and run

A war with Iran will radicalize the rest of the ME against the US, particularly Iraq, and thrill Saudi Arabia.

    Think this through, people.

We lost South Vietnam because the American people no longer supported the war and NV had inviolable sanctuaries.

We lost Iraq because we put American corporate greed before hiring the Iraqi people at $15 an hour to rebuild their country.

So you believe that this is the heroic goal of the liberation of the Iranian people from the regime of the mullahs?
Apart from the fact that this point is at best third-rate ... this now means the following:

The US is attacking Iran ... alone, or with Saudi Arabia and maybe even Israel, because Saudi Arabia is the big warmonger here, they are supposedly even ready to let Israeli jets pass unhindered and deliberately through Saudi airspace for air strikes in Iran, as allies.
That Iran alone can not win this war militarily and it is a matter of weeks or a few months is clear for everyone. The regime has fallen, the surviving mullahs flee like Saddam and his henchmenand dive under.

    WHAT NOW AND WHAT THEN?

It's clear that the old regime and its flolvers are not just going to disappear and live on with false identities, etc. No ... they will throw a civil war on the country against those who follow them as a new government, whoever that is. It was like this in Vietnam, that was in Afghanistan in 1980's, that's how it was in Afghanistan with the Taliban and that's how it was in Iraq! In the Ran that will be the same case.

    There are now 2 options:

    a)
The US withdraws immediately after the fall of the mullahs back completely, say as so often "mission accomplished", proclaim proudly their victory and tell the Iranians, they now free his and then clear the rest himself, because the task was the US supposedly only to drive the mullahs out!
Then the same happens as in Lybia and this result on the Strait of Hormuz and in the Persian Gulf itself is like a nuclear meltdown of the whole region!
Apart from the fact that the Americans can also be justified in accusing cowardice of responsibility ...

    b)
The US remains militarily present in Iran, helping the country achieve a real democracy in peace.
If the US gets as stupid as it does in Afghanistan and Iraq, it will be an eternal mission.
In addition, after 40 years of enmity with the US, sections of the population definitely hate the US and the US must be very careful not to look like a bad occupation force in everything they do ... and woe if anything like that The scandal of Abu Ghraib in Iraq also happens in Iran ... or unruly mullahs land without trial and charges in Guantanamo.
Also not to be underestimated is the Hezbollah in Lebanon in the matter ... especially in terms of terrorist attacks worldwide!

A winner I see here not in the end ... and for sure are not the Iranian people the winner!

See my answer above ... this will be the case!
The times where the US can win such thing are over!

In the end the losses of US soldiers in an occupied Iran will be one time so high, that US people don't want their sons and daughters there further to be send ...
Or if option a, then the complete ME is lost for the US

As a person in a position to responsibility and power, this individual should be one of the first dropped in if the situation deteriorates to that point.

Maybe ... but this single one person is not existing in Iran, which you have to kill with a well-targeted bomb and then everything collapses like a "House of Cards" in Iran!

That is the opposite of what most people say. They believe if people think that an attack on Iran would be anything like as easy peasy as the destruction of Iraq and the creation of Isis, they do not know what they are talking about. They do not believe that air strikes would do it and they know that Iran will have an exceedingly well rehearsed answer to anything you do as you have been threatening it for decades. Boots on the ground which Pompeo is talking about would they say give the US an enormous thrashing. Iran is a big country. The Iranians know it well. The US not so much. Both Iran and Venezuela will not meet the US in an Iraq style war. Both have made preparations for a Vietnam styled one where they know every inch of the country and you are sitting ducks. The US will be sending home tens of thousands of her young in body bags.

How many times have wars been started and people said, "It'll be over by Christmas!"?
Wars are, by definition, insanity and incertitude.
There is no reason for war with Iran. There is no reason that, if the U.S. can be friends with Germany, Japan and Vietnam, we cannot be friends with Iran.

Perhaps the US should stop dictating who Iran can trade with

At the risk of repeating myself, I've always said that the moment to leave Iraq would have been after that iconic footage of Saddam's statue being pulled down from the plinth.

What do you base this belief on? Most Iranians were pro-west until the US started war-drumming. Drop one bomb on Iran and they will all be united in hatred against the US. Then you will have Shia and Sunni Muslims wanting revenge. Every terrorist attack on US soil has been carried out by Sunni Muslims who are covertly backed up by Saudi funding yet the enemy is Shia

And you say negotiate. Negotiate what?

The real goal was never to liberate the people by removing Saddam, the goal was to control and profit from the oil. That badly backfired, but anyway, there's always Iran next to try the same strategy.

Sounds like your're talking 'regime change'? Please don't interfere in the ME again - you know it always ends in tears - and body bags?

In the latest tense exchange between Tehran and Washington, Iran's hardline Revolutionary Guards separately said Iran would not negotiate with the United States, a stance likely in part to be intended to discourage Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his moderate allies from taking up a US offer of talks.

Nothing quite that dramatic, but the observation stands. If the mullahs are attacked, and defeated, what's next? Would the younger Iranians rise up to take back their nation from the defeated Mullahs? I can't answer that. I would like to think they would, but can you really rely on them to actually do it?

Wrong. If the US wanted Iraqi oil it would have taken Iraq's oil. Instead what the US did was get Iraq's oil companies up and running again after years of neglect by Saddam. The new Iraqi government chose the companies who would operate their oil fields and refining plants.

UN sanctions also dictate who Iran can trade with. There is a reason why the UN sanctioned Iran.

There was a time the US wasn't friendly with Germany, Japan or Vietnam. The US Marshall plan helped rebuild Germany and Japan after WW2.

Remember "We'll be home in six weeks" in 1965.

If there is to be war, use the Bill Clinton method -- no boots on the ground, blow the utter hell out of everything with air power.
