House expands Civil Rights Act!!!

The House has approved a bill to expand the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender id. It was approved 237 to 173.

All Democrats voted for it as well as 8 Republicans.

Right now it is legal under Federal law to discriminate in housing, education, employment, and public accommodations based on sexual orientation or gender ID, but illegal to do so for reasons of race, gender, nationality, religion, ethnicity, physical handicap.

Let's pray that the Senate will see the light and expand Equal Opportunity and stop irrational and illogical discrimination!

The Republicans are always opposing Affirmative Action saying they fully support equal opportunity but NOT "special help or hand outs". Well, time to see if they REALLY believe that.

 

The bill will die in the Senate.

 

So when will they make it illegal for people to discriminate based upon political affiliation, or ideology? Will we start seeing affirmative action in our schools, where K-12 , colleges and universities will be forced to hire Republicans and Conservatives for teaching and administrative staff?

Don't be so sure. It won't pass unanimously, but there just isn't enough of an upside compared to a downside.

If the republicans are smart (they aren't) they will amend it to include services like health and car insurance, then send it back to the house. Then the democrats in the house will have to vote to make discriminatory car insurance rates legal, which they cannot do. Women don't like being forced to take public transportation to work.

 

People are discriminated against over their pets. When will Democrats include their pets?

 

Just wait until the democrats try to get some car insurance for their 17 year old daughter, only to find out that it's illegal to charge girls less than 17 year old boys.

 

I support getting rid of all these protected classes and just outlawing discrimination against anyone for any reason. Inability to pay included.

 

If we could only get rid of these laws against slavery. Then we wouldn’t have all these slaves everywhere.

Adding gender id to the wording of the legislation would definitely have some unforeseen consequences.

The Civil Rights Act had all sorts of additional practical implications, besides just "protecting" certain groups. It was very controversial when passed, and not entirely without good reason.
It's not so simple as just protecting certain groups.

Children can't legally consent to marriage, so they can't be married. Same reason we won't allow people to marry animals.

Saying "the law says X" is a complete non-point coming from people who are constantly trying to change the law to fit their ideology. This very thread is about changing the law.

The ideology of "banning all discrimination" directly leads to banning discrimination against children, which logically implies legalizing consensual sex with children just like it is for adults. This is a fact.

Yes, minors can legally get married in quite a few states, if they have consent of parent or guardian. It varies by state, and gender of spouses, but you'd probably be amazed at just how young a girl can get married.

Religious freedom is enshrined in the Constitution already.
