The New York state legislature has voted to pass a measure that would make it the first state in the country to ban the declawing of cats.

The law seeks to ban onychectomy, or declawing, on cats in the state except for in cases where it is needed to address a "physical medical condition" that "compromises the cat's health," the bill's text states.

However, the bill states that it would outlaw the procedure for "cosmetic or aesthetic reasons or reasons of convenience in keeping or handling the cat."

If the law is passed, veterinarians who violate it could face a fine of up to $1,000.

With the bill’s passage Tuesday, the legislation now heads to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's (Democrat) desk for approval.

What do you think? Is declawing a cat cruelty?
Will more animals get left outside in the cold because their owners don't want the cat inside clawing on furniture?

declawing a cat is an actual thing... OMG I'm horrified... how could you do that... yes it's cruel,

I say anyone who declaws a cat has to have their fingernails pulled out too.

(I will not mention this to my daughter she had to stay home on prawn dissection day - something to do with the slicing of other species)

If you have a cat they have claws and its their only defense if attacked save biting if that is a problem don't have a cat as a companion. Unless of course there is a medical reason to remove a claw that's covered in the law.

If a person doesn't want a cat with its claws, they should get a dog. A cat with no claws is defenseless against dogs, many of which like to attack cats. And cats, being an animal with all the attendant instincts and mannerisms, will often stand its ground against a dog. Often, without claws it will act in the same way, not making the intellectual connection between having no claws and it resultant inability to defend itself. It will swat at the attacking dog and the dog will kill it.

    Yeah it's cruel.

New York is so wonderful! Now more cats will be put to death for lack of people to adopt them because they can't be declawed. Way to go!

More likely, the kitties'll probably just get turned loose in the upper east side of manhattan or wherever streisand lives. That way everyone looks marvy, and the cats live happily ever after. The End.

I had two cats declawed. They were up and around in about 24 hours. Thereafter, I saved thousands of dollars in shredded furniture, curtains, rugs etc, and my kitties were perfectly content right up to the days they died of old age.

My kitties never went out of the house unless I was with them. Ta-da. That law is political BS.

Look at it this way: New York politicians have tightened the screws on you and you are cheering them.

    That's just perverse.

If you don't like declawing cats, don't do it. No problem. Your cats won't care, but you can feel good about yourself or whatever. To allow these power-obsessed lawmakers to pass laws you think are good because they punish everyone you happen to disagree with? That is a HUGE problem.

It's worse than that. They cut the first knuckle as well. It is only suitable for domesticated cats that will be IN THE HOME until the end of their life as it leaves them defenseless against predators if abandoned. I've seen countless animal carcasses in which people did all kinds of unspeakable acts to rid themselves of an unwanted pet that has no chance of surviving in the wild.

This is one of those damned if you do damned if you don’t laws promoted by emotional appeal.
Declaw a cat and it gets discarded to the street and it won’t be able to defend it self and likely die.
Don’t declaw a cat and how many people will discard a cat to the street because they become upset when things in a house start getting destroyed by a cat clawing or a young child gets repeatedly scratched when abusing a cat as the cat reacts in defense?
In the latter case cats can be trained not to claw or scratch children, but how many people are willing to and know how to train their cats?.... or their children...
Lots of feral cats out there....

I do not agree with the laws, I can see cases where needed, a cat that claws everyone, may have the choice of being put to sleep or declawed as an example

while I would prefer cat's not be declawed, I think this is a right of the owner, just like circumcision is the right of the parents

and just like circumcision, there will be some for and some against it

Declawing cats is not only illegal it's suicidal. I know I've tried.

Declawed cats turn into biting machines.

Doesn’t this fall under the 2A, cats having a right to keep and bear arms... or claws?

Will such serve to devastate the rat population in the state of New York as more felines hungrily roam the streets and subways?

Scratching posts are a great alternative. People who get cats should know that clawing can be a 'thing'. The cat should be declawed. Sorry, we can't agree on this.

agree, I would recommend trying every alternative first, even giving the cat away, but still would not make it illegal

We fight tooth and nail (no pun intended) to get animal rights' laws passed. Some may scoff at it, but animals/pets play a huge role in our lives today, and they need to be protected. So while declawing sounds like a thing that shouldn't require a law, I see it as a step in the right direction.

Why don't you remove all their legs at the same time, I'm sure they will still be content.

Back off, pal. Don't give me your holier-than-thou bs. My cats were up and about, and playing within 24 hours. They both lived full kitty-cat indoor lives for well over 15 years, so get lost.

****in' liberal wouldn't know "truth and justice" if it bit him in the ass.

Why don't you amputate your fingers and then see how content you are? You'll be up and playing within 24 hours too

All cats should be kept indoors anyway, they are simply too adventurous for their own good

But declawing is flat out cruelty. I thought it already was illegal. All animal rights groups are against it and I know of very few vets who will do it.

It gets even crazier than that. In my town, the feral cat population was causing a nuisance. The local police department put out a notice that the local vet would euthanize the animals (previously, pets). The vet put out a release stating they never agreed to such procedures. It was eventually retracted because of the locals protesting such harsh measures.
