The latest set of statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows all of the professional pundit claims of higher prices on imported goods due to Trump tariffs are simply disconnected from reality. In actuality the year-over-year prices of import products are actually dropping:
...The U.S steel and aluminum tariffs have been in effect globally since 2017. Tariffs on softwood lumber (Canada) & durable appliances (S. Korea), same duration. Additionally the first set of tariffs on China is now well over a year old; and the second set of expanded tariffs on China began a month ago; again, no material impact to the delivered price.

Despite two years of claims by the professional media that tariffs would lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers, as you can see above the reality is quite different.

    https://theconservativetreehouse.co...s-decline-during-full-year-of-import-tariffs/

As with so many aspects of the Trump Presidency, he has proven his critics wrong.

China's economy is very weak and they have tried to bypass tariffs by hiding the country of origin (often stated as Vietnam) of exports, or by clamping down on Hong Kong (where the tariffs do not apply).

Mexico and Honduras are now tripping over themselves to secure their borders and stem the flow of illegals. Immediately after the threat of sanctions, the President of Mexico (a communist) fired his immigration chief and sold off the mexican Presidents airplane.

Point being, Trumps critics were wrong.

That image literally emphasizes the slight decrease from May 2018 to May 2019, while completely overlooking the increases that occurred when the tariffs were first implemented. In other words, instead of presenting a before and after example, their emphasizing on two after examples (the two "afters" being two periods after the tariffs were first implemented)

If you give a before and after example, the price of imports are higher than they were before the tariffs were implemented. That is a fact, the very image used in the article shows that.. I am once again reminded of a particular thread previously posted on these forums

There is nothing in your graph that suggests the decrease was un PRICES it could very well be referring to the volume of imports declining???And where did you get that May information since the most recent one I can find online is only through April.

Now do the prices of imported goods which are ACTUALLY being tariffed instead of disingenuously using the prices of ALL imported goods. Seriously, how dumb can anybody be to think this is a smart analysis? Also, price indexes don’t include duties, as can be read on BLS’ FAQ page.

It is a good time to have China place even higher than before tariffs on USA farm products.

Farmers in many places, e.g. the Mississippi and Missouri river drainage basins, will not be able to get into their fields until mid-July and even later. Many will not plant for a fall harvest, fearing early freezes and not enough sun and time to get a profitable crop. The floods are agriculturally sad, but if you have to have the floods and time them, now is an ideal time.

There won't be much of a harvest this fall, so keep the food in the good ole USA for Americans.

Many cattle and hogs will go to slaughter for lack of feed; keep that meat here in the good ole USA for Americans.

    MAGA.

Let China put even higher tariffs on our farm products that will be unavailable to them.

We know for fact that the Canadian lumber tariffs alone added between $9,000-$20,000 on the price of an average home price. And just the steel and aluminum tariffs added $1,500 -$2,000 onto the average car price.

Yup. I realized that when we saw inflation so stable that it's not even meeting the Fed's benchmark. Now these tariffs are clearly being paid, we can see the revenue flow to the US treasury, but, it's certainly not the US Consumer paying them, or else we would be seeing them show up in consumer pricing.

I was expecting this, but thank you digging up and posting the actual numbers.

These aren’t reliable numbers because they are showing the average prices of ALL imports rather than prices for tariffed goods. You guys are incredibly dense.

Why would that happen? Trump caved on his threat of tariffs to Mexico.

You're right. It is hard to keep up with all of Trump's lies and the number of times he has folded and then claimed victory.

Still doesn't explain why you were talking about the lack of increase in price on tariffs that were never implemented.

I would like to see the numbers for two years vs the specified time period to get a true picture. I have no problem with overall increases/decreases because that gives the entire picture. If we're paying less for all goods imported, we're still paying less overall and that's great.

It's nice to see the President's policies working to lower the cost of imports. It's great to see Americans benefiting, and the nation becoming great again!

China is responding to Trump’s trade wars. And doing it in a way that was widely predicted.

If your family is on the corn or soybean business, they should be very worried.

Trump’s tariffs triggered the Chinese tariffs on US corn and soybeans, and the Chinese import market is shifting to Brazil, which is a more reliable trade partner than the US under Trump (which recent events make plain, can’t be trusted at all).

If this situation is not rectified in the next two years, that shift is likely to be permanent, leaving US farmers out of one of the biggest world markets for their products.

Your fuhrer ran his idiot mouth again, and wound up backing down.

    Move along.

And by all means, don’t admit that the entire thing was and idiotic play to the Trumpster fan base. No plan, no recognition of potential consequence, and no real outcome.

Just another day in the stupidity, bluster, and incompetence of the Trump Administration.

Trumpsters look to conveniently forget, all set to cheer for the next episode of Donald Trump’s idiocy.
