I disagree. Trump is very likely to win in court. The DOJ opinion will likely be very important as well, because it exposes a couple of very pertinent questions "Why do you need THIS President's taxes"....and...."why do you need them at this time". If those that want his taxes can not come up with a very good answer to both in order to show that Trump is not being singled out, they will very likely lose the case. However, I can see the courts saying "do your audit on the next President"....in which case, Trump may have to provide his taxes when he is re-elected.

 

The law says they can get anyone taxes, it doesn’t give any wiggle room.

 

The Law (and a SCOTUS ruling) also states that Congress can only investigate for "legislative purposes". Also, the 4th Amendment prevents unreasonable searches of a person's papers. Congress can not just go on a witch-hunt and dig for dirt until they find some. The intent of the clause that allows Congress to see anybody's taxes was for pursuit of that legislative purpose....not to smear a sitting President. Most courts will recognize this. Very seldom will courts say "well....this part of the law says it is ok, so no problem".

 

Congress can see Trump's New York State income tax returns.

all they have to do is request them.

And neither you nor anyone else has ever been able to say exactly what it is you expect to find in them that is not already in his financial disclosures and why his right to privacy should be violated.

Nah...only a small part of Conservatives want to keep pot illegal anymore. That is why many of the State's initiatives of legalizing pot are succeeding. It has bi=partisan support.

 

I really cannot see how the right justify their narrative here with something that trump promised to release numerous times and has been a presidential norm for generations. Now they are acting like he is winning because he is succeeding in lying to the American people, republicans included.

I will NEVER expect a politician to keep their promises (right or left).....especially promises made on the campaign trail. I figure if their lips are moving, they are likely lying. On trump's tax returns, sure he said he would release them, but I doubt that promise got him elected. I am just amazed at the number of the left are crying "but...but....but....he promised" when he had no legal obligation to do so.....as if no politician has ever went back on a promise since the beginning of time.

Also, it has not been the "norm" for generations. It started in 1973 with Nixon because of the Watergate sandal (so maybe 1 or 2 generations). Ford did not release his tax returns when he replaced Nixon and not even when he ran in 1974. Bill Clinton did not release his tax returns until AFTER he was elected, and only then after push-back over the Whitewater investigation. Nobody really said anything about Clinton not releasing them, but suddenly it is a big issue for Trump.

 

The States may be liberal based on Governmental positions filled, but that does not mean the whole State is liberal. For instance, I live in Oregon....a liberal State that is barely liberal and mainly only because of the voters in Portland. Without non-partisan support, the voters in Oregon would not have passed the measure allowing recreational pot (easier to spell). There were many counties in Oregon that voted "red" in the last Presidential elections that voted for the legalization of pot. Measure 91 passed by a very significant 56% - 44%. Our latest Democrat Governor was only elected by 50%-44%.

While I acknowledge that something needs to be done about out healthcare in this country (something else trump lied that he would “fix” — by making more insolvent). What does that have to the thread or the question I posed besides being a sorry attempt at deflection.

It’s a big issue because of the effort he is going to in an attempt to hide them after saying he would release them. That typically causes concern for people.

Well, I did not think I was deflecting. I thought I answered your question quite directly.

My point with Obama and Biden is that Presidents lie. They lie more when they are running for office. Some even lie when the truth would be easier. They wake up lying, They lie as they go to the bathroom. I would bet that some of them dream in lies...maybe even Trump.

I would say it is not a case of people being too stupid to see that he is a liar....it is that the lies that he has told are meaningless and they do not care. Many of the claims of him lying are nothing more than instances of obvious hyperbole and exaggeration.....and yes, some outright lies.

So why is this lie more important or concern causing than all of the many many lies politicians have uttered in the past? I have never seen so much consternation over a political lie in the 50 years I have been paying attention to politics.

So, if you want a much more direct answer: If a Democrat had made the same lie of saying they would release their taxes and then reneged, I would only think of it fleetingly. Sure, it might show me what type of President he will be, but I really could not care less. I would take it with as much concern as a weather man saying that it will be sunny today, but yet it rained....or about as concerning as an ad on TV about how great a product is, when it was not that great. For one thing, tax returns really do not tell anybody much and all they are is food for the media to pick at.
