It won't be long until cars will drive themselves...

people on the roads will be controlled by computers.

And the plan is we will all be safer for it....no more human error and disregard for the rules which has killed thousands of people every year since the car began.

    Is everyone on board?

Or are some people worried about being "controlled" in such a manner?

Self-driving/controlled vehicles are controlled by computers. You ever had a home PC freeze or crash? How about a virus getting into your PC? Could a hacker cause a 100-car crash on an interstate?

Great dream but how is everyone going to have a self driving car any time soon. What do we do with all the non-self driving cars? Will we have to subsidize the purchase of new self driving cars for the poor? How soon do you really think this can be implemented? And most importantly what will be the cost?

My car is 19 years old and when it finally dies my next one will probably be 15 years old so I'm guessing somewhere around 2040-2045 I might be seriously looking at a self-driving car. I guess there's time for a Windows update by then.

I like the idea of Self-driving cars. I want my next car to be self-driving. Unfortunately, I don't have the money To buy one. I feel like biggie will be very expensive and add to traffic congestion. Another idea is self-driving taxis and buses.

So you prefer the regular death and destruction that has been common for decades by humans?

Self driving trucks will be first. They replace paid drivers, so can be more expensive.

Self-driving cars aren’t even legal in most states.
This is going to be a very long transition, which might take 50-100 years.
A month ago I rented a car for a road trip and it had an interesting cruise control - it was using radars to detect cars up front and would slow down when I was getting close to someone behind. As soon as the car in front of me moved the cruise control was resuming speed on its own. I went many miles with just steering the wheel.
I think the upgrades will be incremental, like the cruise control I described, and will take a long time for cars to fully evolve.

Since we have allowed our roads highways and bridges to get into such a deplorable state I think they should go directly to vehicles that fly at very low altitudes. We are not very smart as a nation, if we were we would have banned property owners from planting trees that grow to the height of power lines from being within 85 feet of the power lines 100 plus years ago.We should only allow short decorative trees anywhere close to them.We would eliminate 95% of storm related power outages.

The way most people envision it no one actually owns a car any more you need transport you punch in the ap on your phone and a few minutes later a car shows up to take you to your destination.

I didn't say that. And presently there are no facts that point out computer controlled cars will be safer. Right now that is wishful thinking. If and when they do reduce the vehicle related deaths I will be happy to "ride in one". Until that is proven I will stay in control of my own safety. "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread".

It will happen and I can't wait. Imagine a world where traffic patterns make sense and idiots don't make last minute lane changes?

How many accidents (and deaths) will just THAT prevent?

And guess what? They will ALWAYS have manual over ride.
Ya know what will screw things up? The Luddites who insist that "driving is fun".

Right now the chief problem with automated cars is that the AI has Trouble dealing with the myriad of insane things people do on the high way. This is largely a programing issue. What isn't a programing issue are privacy concerns.

What makes you think self driving cars will be death free? All electronic equipment fails sooner or later. I don't want one.

    Death free?

    Is driving currently "death free"?

Or do 50,000 people die every year as is...

That's what I said. There's no such thing as death free. Get yourself one. I'll pass.

They already have them on trucks but they rely on the driver.

That's because when a truck arrives at its destination, then the driver has to help unload it. So, we still need humans to fill the role. That is unless they get the Atlas robot, from Boston Dynamics, to load and unload the truck.

I read an article that said car manufacturers expect driverless vehicles will be the primary form of transportation by 2050.

There could be driverless planes, too. Automation has already made flying incredibly safe. Added passenger inspection and rules probably make planes one of the safest places to be.

Unmanned spacecraft can land on planets millions of miles away.
