Russian Su-27 fighter jet scrambled to intercept US surveillance plane over Black Sea
The Russian military has sent a Sukhoi Su-27 twin-engine fighter aircraft to identify a US Air Force P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol plane as it was approaching the Russian state border from the Black Sea. The Su-27 came within a safe distance from the US spy plane, forcing the Boeing-produced aircraft to “immediately” change course and turn away from the Russian border, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported Friday.

The intercept comes amid large-scale Sea Breeze exercises, featuring Ukraine, the US and over a dozen NATO allies, that kicked off on July, 1. About 3,000 troops, over 30 warships and 24 aircraft from 19 countries are taking part in military drills, an exercise that has raised concerns in Russia.

    -----
Nothing too serious, I guess, just a cat and mouse game. But these Sea Breeze exercises are clearly held for the benefit of Ukraine to show the "enemy", Russia, all their friends who would risk their head defending them.
Of course, Russia would love to have the Black Sea for themselves.

The Black Sea is not the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico where we can watch the Russian fleets sailing around freely, (I say this jestingly of course), it is a closed sea, and was established as such by the Montreux Convention. It is essential to Russia's survival. Any messing with it and there will be fireworks flying the next day - and I'm not joking.

What Washington and Nato are doing is a direct provocation and threat to Russia. It is a much worse situation than having Russian and Chinese fleets sailing about in the Carribean and Gulf of Mexico, since we are not dependent on New Orleans for survival. But Russia's sole access to the Mediterranean is through the Bosporus and the Aegean - and Turkey knows this. One wrong move and Turkey will be toast.

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits is a 1936 agreement that gives Turkey control over the Turkish Straits and regulates the transit of naval warships. The Convention gives Turkey full control over the Turkish Straits and guarantees the free passage of civilian vessels in peacetime. It restricts the passage of naval ships not belonging to Black Sea states.

It's not a "closed Sea" anymore...and any treaty is redundant....SI doesn't exist anymore, and those other countries are in NATO, and foreign ships have a right to be there.

iirc they're sightseeing the east coast from the air, too, but not nearly as often as in the 50's, 60's, and 70's.

That Bear bomber is prettier than an old B-36, too, but not as pretty on the runway as a fully loaded B-52.

Last time I checked, they just walked in and took their seaport back.
They also backed up Assad to have their seaport there as well.

The west tried , but couldn't stop it.

And the US is buzzing Russia, especially in the North Sea. The Black Sea though is a special case. There are rules and Turkey is the guardian of the passage through the Bosporus. I think a visiting warship can only stay for 21 days, so what I think Nato is doing is having Romania invite one ship from each Nato country and at the same time. I'm just guessing here, I don't know for sure.

Russia always had designs on Constantinople since it controls the Bosporus, but not only because of security reasons, but religious reasons as well. The only reason Britain helped the Ottomans in the Crimean war, was to keep Russia from grabbing Constantinople. When Devotoglu, Erdogan's second in charge shot down the Russian plane, Putin to offend and frighten Turkey began using the name Constantinople instead of Istanbul. Of course it wasn't the only thing, 5 thousand hotels were forced to close within a few months.

In the 19th century the population of Constantinople was Greek first, then Turkish and then Jewish, so Turkey started a policy of changing demographics by bringing in Turks from the countryside - not to mention ethnic cleansing as well. They've been doing this a lot in other places as well to take them over such as Cyprus and Syria.

The U.S. Air Force doesn't fly the Boeing P-8 Poseidon !

    The P-8 is a U.S. Navy aircraft.

Basically the U.S. Navy took a Boeing 737 and turned it into a maritime patrol bomber that replaced the Lockheed P-3 Orion.

Those NATO countries in the Black Sea can have warships there anytime and as long as they choose.

The Black Sea isn't some "Russki lake" anymore....and the Moskalis are just pissed about it. :)).

Back when Obama was President, Putin would be laughing his ass off as Russian bombers would fly circles around Guam.

The same island that some liberals in Congress who claimed would tip over and sink into the sea if we put U.S. Marines in the island.

That's something like John Bolton or John McCain or Crooked Hillary would say.

The scuttlebutt is, President Trump is close to dumping John Bolton (war mongering neocon liberal Republican RINO) as his National Security Adviser.

Yeah because Syria turned out so good for Hillary. Hillary and Co (and zoom) "Let's arm terrorists to remove a dictator that we formerly installed but need regime change for the upcoming presidential election so I'll have an accomplishment to point to."

I remember when Bolton, Hillary, and McCain said Assad would be gone "any day now". That was over 6 years ago. What assclowns.

The CATCH-22 in the Black Sea

    The Montreux Convention

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, as it is officially known, required Turkey to allow free passage for commercial vessels except in time of war or when it was threatened by an outside power; but it imposed significant restrictions on foreign naval ships even during peacetime. According to the Convention, no one country could put more than nine naval vessels displacing no more than 15,000 tons into the Black Sea; and no group of non–Black Sea littoral states could insert naval vessels weighing more than 45,000 tons. Moreover, the Convention specified that no such vessel could remain in the Black Sea for more than 21 days...

Well, an intercept like this wasn’t a big deal and shooting would be stupid.
I would open fire when Russian jets decide to buzz too close to our ships and aircraft in a very aggressive way, like they sometimes do. If their jet gets as close as 0.25 miles - shoot it down.

Play in their backyard....don't bitch about getting buzzed. Same goes if they are in the Gulf of Mexico, for example. It doesn't matter if they get within 25 feet, if it's in international waters anything goes.

That kind of dumbass **** you and your compadre are talking about is what starts world wars. Suck it up buttercup and quit acting like a wuss. Either don't go there or put in some earplugs when they do a look-see fly by.

Excessively aggressive behavior in international space should not be tolerated.
I’m not advocating shooting down an intercept when our planes or ships are close to someone’s borders, but when we see this behavior far from their borders we should be able to shoot at the offender. After all, if the pilot of a jet that gets too close to our ship miscalculated and crashes into our ship we will have a lot of dead sailors. We shouldn’t be putting our sailors or pilots lives at risk just to satisfy Russian urges to show bravado and reckless behavior.

PS - Black Sea is as much of a Russian backyard as it is Romanian, Bulgarian, Turkish or Ukrainian who have legitimate right to invite us to those waters. Black Sea does not belong to Russia.

Well it really hasn't started any world wars....just kinda makes the Kremlin porch monkey look like a yella bastard.....where if I can remember Putinka mentioning the sanctions on Russkis was an "act of war"??

If it is....he hasn't done much....if at all, anything to counter it.

But like I said before....stick to ramming Ukrainian tugboats in the Azov, attacking Georgians, those who can't adequately defend themselves. That seems more your speed.

Oh...I'm not crying about this...LOL, I just use the saying......"you piss in our backyard....we will flood yours and then some".

There are only two kinds of people who would get pleasure from a NATO/Russia armed confrontation: (1) idiots, and (2) Islamists.
