I remember the film “The Man In the White Suit” with Alec Guinness and I wondered if it could happen in real life.

Then there was the death of the electric car and its sudden “resurrection”.

Now we have the cure for cancer: Don't we?

The problem with theories like this is that they ignore the fact that any drug company could just sweep in the supposed cure, make a fortune, and cut the legs out from under their competitors. If such a cure existed already, there would a massive profit motive to produce it . . . perhaps one of the biggest profit motives in history.

Did you watch the film or are you only guessing on the basis of a "conspiracy theory" mentality?

My wife worked in cancer research for years. I'm not guessing about the "conspiracy theory" mentality, and the argument as presented falls into this mentality for the reasons provided.

In other words, you can't defend your position and you are mistaking anecdotes for medical evidence. Good to know.

You are very clever to refuse to watch the film. It will only increase the possibility of your wife insisting you sleep on the sofa. But does knowledge really frighten you to that extent?

If you have some facts from the film you'd like to discuss, pull them out. PF has rules about that. Knowledge has never frightened me . Snake oil salesman do, however, offend me.

There is no such thing as cancer. In reality there are hundreds of different cancers. No one type of treatment works for all or even most. And even the exact cancer often requires different treatments depending on the individual.

Also you could at least post the qualifications of the person who is claiming the cure is suppressed if you really expect someone to watch.

What it boils down to is that you refuse to watch a film that you have been led to believe is based on false premises WITHOUT any facts. So you have already put yourself into a precarious position, one that encourages you to condemn someone without facts, yet you require facts from me only to convince you that you ought to watch the film. PF rules insist that each member supports his view with facts or perhaps personal motivation. But I am standing on no conviction for you to scrutinize. I am simply suggesting you watch the film and judge for yourself. Since you refuse to watch it there is no discussion beyond that point. How do you justify that? Is it sufficient enough for you to insinuate the doctor is "a snake oil salesman"?

Are you really expecting people who want to discuss this to watch a two hour video? You know that's not going to happen, right?

Actually tried about two minutes. Wasted those two. Interesting you can’t even post the credentials of the person making the claim. Did you actually watch it or does he have no credentials?

That's not up to me. If the subject of cancer (and what has been done about it) doesn't interest you .......

The only resurrection of the electric car is the government's subsidizing Musk's Tesla. It still can't win in the free market. So, if that's your enticement to watch the film, it fails miserably.

Only in the short term. Big companies dont think in the short term, and small companies are subject to espionage, sabotage, theft, censorship and monopolization by the big companies.

Suppression of a cure would indeed be difficult, but not impossible.

Based on this film, I'd say we don't. We're treated to nonstop conspiracy BS and anecdotal stories, but no facts about what the guy has supposedly come up with.

Why no facts? Doesn't it bother you there's no substance?

No, there would be long term profitability, and yes, many companies do think in the short term, to a fault. Suppression of a cure would violate basic game theory.

How can the profits selling a cure compare to the profits selling treatment? They would have to sell the cure for hundreds of thousands of dollars each to match the economic loss of treatment, and that would invite regulation of the price of the product that would be overwhelmingly publicly supported and doomed to price (profit) restriction. Its Iar easier to hide and continue the profits of treatment than a cure.

Because demand would be astronomical and it would easily outstrip their competitors. And the treatment is only profitable if NO ONE makes the cure.

And all any of their competitors would have to do to take all of that revenue from them would be to produce the cure. Game theory says the best strategy is to produce the cure.
