This is going to get ugly. We were barely able to get these debt ceiling increases passed before Trump. Both sides think they have something to gain, and both sides hate each other. Trump wants a clean debt ceiling increase (which is what Obama always wanted), and Pelosi wants some concessions (which is what the GOP always wanted), and the Tea Party- oh yeah, the Tea Party stopped caring about deficits after Nov. 2016, so they're not a factor. Pelosi also knows Trump was largely blamed for the last government shut down, and eventually caved, so she probably thinks she can pin another one on him. Trump lives in a bizzaro reality world where his approval rating is 103%, so I wonder A) how anything is going to get out of Congress, and B) whether Trump will sign anything. My guess is a compromise is somehow worked out, because the alternative would be catastrophic.
The alternate would be another shutdown, which few people noticed last time, or the time before that. You folks overplayed your hand, and now the House is caught up in petty nonsense. If there is a problem, it would be that Democrats would have to compromise between their radical socialist anti-semites and the other progs. Pelosi just caved on the border, what makes you think she's got the juice to stand down Trump now? She can't control her own party...
LOL at Pelosi caved on the border..... Outstanding!! Who needs Netflix anymore with entertainment like this for free??
She caved, that's all there is to it. Not sur how you could see that another way. Forget entertainment, you should focus on returning to reality...
I can introduce you to a couple of dozen people who” didn’t notice” when they didn’t get paid for weeks, and has to wait a couple of months to see their money. Fortunately, I did not have business with the Federal government at the time, so I wasn’t directly impacted.
Not raising the debt ceiling is different than shutting the govt. down. My bad for conflating the two.
Democrats should run on a balanced budget amendment and offer cuts to programs that refuse to be audited (ie DOD, Pentagon, most military budgets). Watch the party of fiscal responsibility crumble. The national debt is projected to be over 1 Trillion this year. We have to stop
Everybody knows that Pelosi didn't cave. The whole RW Fever Swamp False Narrative of "Pelosi Caved" is a Totally Discredited Ridiculous "Talking Point". ^And Everybody KNOWS it.
I say cut government by 50%, but that’s not going to fly. A 10% cut across the board would do wonders for our budget and debt.
Why don’t we just start with eliminating all funding for each department that refuses to be audited until they comply? Then after that’s resolved remove duplication. End no bid contracts. Mandate NTE contracts.
The alternative would be less federal government spending which is the only effective long term solution.
It is spending and anyone who thinks to cut spending we need to elect more Democrats is fooling themselves. No not all Republicans are fiscal conservatives but it where they all reside. Once again the administration and Republicans want to restrain spending growth and the Democrats refuse to discuss any restraint or spending control. Spending, Debt-Ceiling Talks Continue as Pelosi’s Deadline Nears .....The Trump administration is seeking roughly $150 billion in cuts to offset any spending increases above limits set in a 2011 law. It proposed to House negotiators a broader list of $574 billion in potential cuts to various programs Thursday evening, according to a senior administration official. The administration has also suggested extending spending limits beyond their expiration after fiscal year 2021 to reduce spending by $516 billion, according to the official. Those offers didn’t appeal to Democrats, and a Democratic aide close to the talks said the proposed cuts were “the White House’s starting point for negotiations on this aspect.” “They understand these levels are nonstarters for us. Talks will continue,” the Democratic aide said. https://www.wsj.com/articles/spendi...ontinue-as-pelosis-deadline-nears-11563549533
These discussions availeth nothing. Both parties play this game of "you bad" and "me good" on the debt ceiling.
My first thought, "Hahaha!" My second thought, "Do it!" I would love to see some Democrats get behind a Balanced Budget Amendment. That would actually make a great bipartisan moment!
Taxes and spending only slow an economy. Europeans have higher taxes and their governments spend more. The result? Their unemployment rate is higher and their economic growth is slower than ours.
