I think nearly every member of this forum would like to see American debt contained, a large percentage want more people covered by healthcare, you want the homeless housed etc

I think that is correct but it is a reflection of contemporary times more than anything else. Don't ever forget that when you need a military ally (and that has mostly happened when there was a Democrat POTUS) you knock and we go along with you. I am confident there would have been the same willingness if POTUS at the time was Republican.

My oldest son was born in Perth, Australia. Although I liked the people very much. and still do, I didn't want him to grow up with Aussies attitudes so left when he was just nine months.

That's very true and we are all part of the Five Eyes. That's why the constant criticism of Americans and their leaders is so off putting. It strongly smacks of provincialism.

It's a movie, not a documentary. It is as indicative of the USA as Mad Max is to life in Australia.

What he actually said was “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came, then come back and show us how it is done. What constant criticism of America and/or Americans? Sure, I get right into it when I see people being slaughtered en masse and 'you' send thoughts and prayers. Yes, I am not a fan of the US poking its nose into places it has no right to do so. I am equally critical of us when we go along with you. It's like my Grandkids. There is stuff they do which pisses me off mightily, but that does not mean I do not love them.

I recall the Aussies used to be very critical of the 'Pommie Poofters' but they were only half serious. But what other country in the world gets the same criticism in Australia as the Americans do? Is it really deserving of so much criticism or perhaps Bali should be more of a concern?

If Americans want to change their laws they will. Or they will not. They are laws by which most Americans want to live, just as Australia, New Zealand and all other democracies have their own distinctive laws according to their customs and cultures. It shouldn't be a concern to outsiders.

Not at all. I like most Australians I know here in the US. I can't say the same about Ireland, where more than half of my own heritage came from before the US revolutionary war. I would probably welcome you to my ranch if it were not for your view of American politics. It is a touchy subject. You want to meddle in US politics, that's your choice but trust, me you are limiting your allies.

 

On the contrary, we are not uncomfortable about what you think of our guns. I know many Australians who are quite envious that their constitution never afforded them the Rights we enjoy in the USA and would very much like to possess firearms.

 

I have to say this. I can thoroughly understand why Team USA resents the (maybe impudent and resented) imposition of Australian comments and criticism on this issue. I feel entitled to do that because we solved the problem. Over there, every week, people are dying, slaughtered. We got rid of bloody guns. Yes, that will be harder to do there than it was here, but that does not mean you guys can do nothing while almost every week, your own good folk get mown down. What would Jesus do? What would the Founding Fathers do? Nothing? Sure, Jesus would send thoughts and prayers. I suspect those Founding Fathers would be far more active and stop this slaughter to the extent they could.

Sure, it is a touchy subject. I know no Aussie who walks away from conviction merely because it relates to a 'touchy subject.' My meddling is appropriate. American citizens are being slaughted on what seems like a weekly basis. Meanwhile, as we type, our Politicians are dealing with a request which the US made of us that we get our Navy over to the other side of the Planet (Hormuz Strait) to give you a hand. I'll bet we'll decide to be there, just like we have every time you have asked.

 

Well.....I know not one. If any one here has a genuine need for a firearm, they can get one. It will take many months and even then, there are quite strict ongoing controls.
