    https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/08/15/politics/trump-buy-greenland-wall-street-journal/index.html

That’s an interesting concept, but considering that the people that live in Greenland enjoy a great deal of autonomy we’d probably need their OK for the transfer and if they were OK with this they’d probably want to become another state.

Puerto Rico voted to become a state back on 2008 and it’s still not. Why wouldn’t Trump do Puerto Rico first? I think a republican president would avoid this issue as it would grant democrats more votes in the senate and the house. Obama was stupid for not doing it during his reign.

What a silly idea. Greenland should be run by Greenlanders, not Washington. I'm opposed even to Danish ownership.

There's something about the topography of Washington D.C. or possibly something in their ground water that makes them just crave controlling other people from thousands of miles away.

I predict (in the event that came to pass) they might pass a special law giving them representation in the House (which would only be 1 seat, due to the miniscule population) but denying them a seat in the Senate.

The very low population relative to other states in the US probably does not warrant any seats in the Senate.
(Just for comparison, Greenland has ten times less population than the least populated current US state, Wyoming)

Greenland can't even protect itself. The reason Greenland hasn't broken off is the natives are too reliant on Danish aid. Without Denmark, Greenland would sink into poverty and natives on the island would be living a very primitive existence similar to how they lived in prehistoric times, but a little like the desperate poverty of indigenous peoples in Canada's far North.

If you want to know what Democratic Socialism would look like here, just look at the cluster referred to as Puerto Rico. I have a condo down there and it's basically a socialist foreign country masquerading as a U.S. territory. At least half of the island is a ghetto.

    'Buy Greenland'

Its an interesting question: how much money would it take for Greenland to join the US?

And why would we want that?

I think territory in the area that is completely under our control would be a fantastic idea.

My friend thinks that Greenland must be where the North Poll is. Trump wants to boot Santa Claus, elves, Rudolph and Donner and Blitzen et al in order to construct Xmas venue and exhibit emporium!

I am fairly familiar with the situation in Denmark, and if I know the Danes, they wouldn't know what to think about such a proposal.
Danes on the Right wouldn't want to give up their national territory, but as to the current state of affairs, the people of Denmark view Greenland as practically a separate country, with their own indigenous minority ethnic culture, that should have their own rights and be independent. Although that's really more in theory than actual practice, because the population is so small, and they need help and money.
So those on the Right might not really view Greenland as such a great loss since it's already regarded in many ways as a separate country and given a great degree of autonomy.
Those on the Left, meanwhile, would be concerned about the native people there, viewing them as potentially vulnerable, while at the same time believing to some extent they should have the autonomy to make the choice for themselves, since they are viewed as their own land and own nation.

I don't think money would be all that great of a factor to either those on the Left or the Right in Denmark.
Most likely those on the Left would want to give the money to the Greenlanders themselves, so that might be a large debate, and a more partisan one.

I am guessing the overall public opinion from Denmark would be one of opposition, but not strong opposition.

Interesting but for those who aren't interested in seeing an expansion of the American empire, ultimately a dangerous thing.

America is in debt up to its eyeballs and Trump is doing what he has always done. Try to spend his way out of bankruptcy

For its natural resources maybe? I don't know why, but I'm gonna say natural resources instead of Santa. I'm a conspiracy theorist like that.

    In other words,

Maybe its an interesting investment when it comes to clima change, than you win so much land for agriculture in the North, e.g. in Greenland. For the same reason Denmark will not sell it.

Why would Greenlanders want to be citizens of a country with a much lower standard of living than they currently enjoy as a Danish territory?

GDP per capita in Greenland is $37k per year.
Much lower than that of Canada or the US.
The transfer of sovereignty will probably not cause any affect on it. If they were to become a state they’d become in a poorer side.

Its just 55,000 heads. My suburb in Chicago has more heads than Greenland’s entire population.

No, a state is a state - all states get two seats in the senate. I bet they’d need to negotiate some special preferential class that does not give them the full power share of a state. They could probably partially merge it with some other state that is at north east. Since Greenland is dependent on a tiny country of Denmark, it could become part of the state of Maine, I guess.

The article says the position is very good. You can survey deep into Russia from Greenland.
