White House hopeful Joe Biden doubled down on his vow to cooperate with Republicans should he be elected president, saying he successfully worked across the aisle as vice president.

“There’s an awful lot of really good Republicans out there,” he said Saturday at a Massachusetts fundraiser. “I get in trouble for saying that with Democrats, but the truth of the matter is, every time we ever got in trouble with our administration, remember who got sent up to Capitol Hill to fix it? Me. Because they know I respect the other team.”

Biden is of course correct, but there will likely be many dems/lefties furious to hear Biden say this.

Beto, for example recently said Trump supporters are probably racist.

Out of the current crop of democrat candidates, Biden is leading, and gets the most support from African Americans-a critical voting block for the democrat party.

This spells doom for any hope he had to get the nomination.

I have to agree, republicans have shown that they are unwilling to work with anyone unless they have no other option.

Democrats should extend the same metric

I have to disagree. Both sides (Republicans and Dims) work hand in hand spending money like drunken sailers. Both sides have demonstrated a lack of restraint when it comes to deficit spending.

The rest of the democrat field has a decision to make and they can either:

    1. Outdo Joe and claim they love republicans more than he does
    2. Openly admit they hate republicans and will never work with them
    3. Do nothing and make Joe sound like the only voice of reason on the left

Why should the left try to work with the right when they are in power seeing how the right behaves on a regular basis even when they are not?

    Exactly.

That is why the Dems need to retain the House and Win back the Senate (and Presidency) and then eliminate the filibuster.

How about... 40 "moderate" dem representatives were elected in 2018 based on their promises to work across the aisle? Is their promise good enough reason to work with the right?

Not that it matters now, they've already proven to have lied, instead of delivering on their promise of moderation and bi-partisanship they are obsessed with impeachment and defending Hamas-loving Jew-haters in their party. Their days in the congress are numbered, their moderate, in many cased right of center constituency won't be fooled twice.

Why should Democrats be expected to honor their word when trump has shown there is no penalties for not doing so?

They will have to sell their dishonorable behavior, lies and empty promises to their in fact moderate right of center constituency. GOOD LUCK with that :D

Does it really unify anyone though, republicans were seen in 2018 — after they were voted out — changing procedure and overall reducing the power and effectiveness of the position they were voted out of. There was gerrymandering, voter disenfranchisement and electoral fraud that mostly benefited the right. We saw the same actions toward the end of Obama’s second term by the right.

So the left should just concede and work together when they have control while the right does whatever they want without repercussions?

LOL, one has to be a total lunatic to imagine that this "but but but Trump", "Orange man bad" gibberish is going to fly in moderate, right of center districts where Dems got elected based on their BS empty lying promises of bipartisanship and moderation.

Lest we forget that we, Trump voters are extremely pleased with how Trump delivers on his campaign promises or at the very least works his tail off trying to. Do you suggest moderates and independents in swing districts will be just as pleased with their lying Democrat representatives? Get real.

    Jeez.

Except that’s not what he said, “Finally we got this car up on level ground. And, yes, it's a little beat up. It needs to go to the body shop. It's got some dents; it needs a tune-up. But it's pointing in the right direction. And now we've got the Republicans tapping us on the shoulder, saying, we want the keys back. You can't have the keys back. You don't know how to drive. You can ride with us if you want, but you got to sit in the backseat. We're going to put middle-class America in the front seat. We're looking out for them.”

    Want to try again?

Biden will not be the next Democrat President and that Admin. when it comes will not resemble the one he served as VP. The Party is evolving and Joe's era is over. I do find the part about him going to the Hill to negotiate because he respected the opposition. That makes it pretty clear that the Obama Admin largely did not which can also help understand the genesis of the political rift in this country.

trump has kept his promises, really?

Do you believe he has won back world respect for America? Tax returns? Being too busy to play golf? Transparency? Honestly? Integrity? Draining the swamp?

There was a time, probably 20 years ago or so, when both parties respected each other. Along with differing political points of view. Both parties realized back then that the goal for both parties was a prosperous and secure America. The paths each would take was different, but the goal was the same.

Back then we had senate leaders like Daschle and Lott, Mitchell and Dole, Baker and Byrd who worked together, played the game of give and take, compromised to get things done and kept the country moving forward. Partisanship existed, be there no doubt about it and some issues there were no compromise. But the vast majority, things could be worked out. There wasn't the polarization, the divisiveness, the ultra, high partisanship. Each party wasn't out to destroy the other.

Biden is from that class. I doubt his remarks will go over big within the Democratic Party which considers each and every Republican the devil reincarnated. As out to destroy this nation. We live in sad times where quite a lot of folks put the good of the political party over the good of the nation. Where they show loyalty to party and not country. We have left the era far behind us when a president could state, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." If any one said that today, he'd be laughed out of town.

Biden is old school, but way out of place, a product of a bygone era. There is no place for him in the world of divisive politics, where divide and conquer is the political strategy of the day. Of pitting one group of voters against another, where the idea is to get the voter to hate your opponent more than you.

    So be it.
