And the ultimate irony is that the PM says we have to honour and respect freedom of passage on the high seas, yet our Navy is ordered (politically) to intercept vessels on those seas if there is a suspicion it contains potentail asylum seekers.

You are not going to support the US. You are going to attack Iran.

They would do better staying away if they want to protect their oil supply. Having all these warboats looking for a fight make it more likely to spark things off.

If you put more police on the streets are they looking for a fight or are they trying to prevent crime? Same here.

Freedom of passage on the high seas is not absolute. The Navy intercepts vessels they reasonably suspect of piracy or smuggling too.

Could be either. When you put these police on another people's street looks more like you are intending on committing crime.

As long as they stick to international waters Iran has no need to cause trouble. It might work better if there was a neutral party nearby to monitor things.

Good article, in that it does a summary that is based on facts, not fiction.

As for the Aussie ship(s), they are welcome to follow their masters where ever it leads them. These kind of ships actually increase Iran's leverage. In fact, Australia are welcome to increase the number of targets for Iran to trap and take out in case of war.

Absolutely true. Look at your carry on about her tankers, never mind your sanctions which in reality act as a siege...then you are patrolling her waters looking for war and all because you broke a UN Treaty. The US is a very rogue state.

Nope Iran is the rogue state and that's why they are under sanction.

Wrong. You are the ones who broke the Treaty. Iran was keeping it. You are bullying the world into sanctions because you have the privilege of being the world's reserve currency. You will soon lose that due to this misuse and need to pay the consequences. The US is a rogue state believing it can be Dictator of the world..

Yes, American built ships and aircraft being crewed by Australian service members, enforcing US gunboat diplomacy. It's right out of the great Netflix series "Secret City".

The Iranians support Palestinian and Syrian terrorists, no deal ever should have been made.. It also was not a treaty.. it was a unilateral agreement from Obama that never would have been signed by our Congress.
The only thing Iran ever needed to know about our stand on their nuclear development is that we would not permit them to have a nuclear attack capability.

When dealing with terrorists you have to be a bully..

"Fifteen to 16 per cent of crude oil and 25 to 30 per cent of refined oil destined for Australia transits through the Strait of Hormuz," Mr Morrison said.

You're there for your own interest, don't pretend you're being magnanimous. One ship, holy crap stop the presses!!!

Wait one more: If you send that warship, who will shell the EMUS???!

I think at times we have been too close.
The ANZUS treaty was a mistake, but I can't blame us.

We are a relatively unpopulated, stategically important island that's 70% as large as Europe. We have no realistic prospect of defending ourselves against any aggressor who would try.

Still, I think we sometimes lean into the American alliance a little too closely, especially in non-military aspects.

We have never been a completely independent nation. With the decline of the British Empire after WWII it was only the natural thing to do to ally with the largest superpower who largely agree with our liberal values.

Australia has been a strong ally of the U.S. for a long time. You sound like you are ashamed about it.
