Trump will eliminate the $19 trillion national debt “over a period of eight years”

Trump will eliminate the $19 trillion national debt “over a period of eight years," or so he said. This may have come right after Trump promised that Mexico would build a wall for us and paying for it.

Incredibly, many believed him and voted for him. Of course, neither happened. Most of us knew that would be the case.

The reverse happened. Americans are paying for the wall, and Trump caused the National Debt to dramatically increase although there has been no wars, no recession, and there has been a booming economy.

On November 9, 2016, most of us knew that would happen, too.

CBS reports, "The U.S. government's budget deficit for the 2019 fiscal year surpassed the $1 trillion benchmark in August, the highest level in seven years."

The last time we hit this level was when President Obama was still battling the effects of the Great Recession, a global economic crisis he inherited from the previous Republican administration along with two of our longest wars.

CBS continued. "The government budget deficit climbed $169 billion to $1.07 trillion in the first 11 months of this budget year, as government spending this year outpaced tax collections in areas such as Social Security, Medicare, defense and interest payments on the national debt. With just one month left in the budget year, the deficit is up 18.8% over the year-ago period, according to the Treasury Department.

"The government has recorded trillion-dollar-plus deficits in only one other period — between 2009 through 2012, when federal spending shot up to cope with the worst financial crisis since the 1930s."

Thank you for your service, Mr. President. You're fired!

Trump has highlighted the hypocrisy of the GOP's position on economics. Reaganomics had a slow decay that wound up affecting GHW Bush's administration, and GW Bush proved further how out of touch Republicans are at being stewards of the economy. Trump is creating a disaster at an unparalleled pace which will eventually blow-up.

Trump's oft used tactic is called truthful hyperbole. It is evident in nearly everything he says. He defines truthful hyperbole in this way.

The final key to the way I promote is bravado. I play to people’s fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It’s an innocent form of exaggeration — and a very effective form of promotion.

Of course, with his over 12,000 lies since he became President, Trump has gone far beyond "innocent form of exaggeration." https://beta.washingtonpost.com/pol...as-made-false-or-misleading-claims-over-days/

The perfect example of truthful hyperbole were the two ludicrous campaign promises mentioned in the OP.

"Trump will eliminate the $19 trillion national debt “over a period of eight years," or so he said. This may have come right after Trump promised that Mexico would build a wall for us and paying for it."

These promises were far removed from reality, and it is difficult to understand how any American voter could believe them. It's like a liberal candidate for President promising free health care, free college tuition, and a raise of $200/Mo from Social Security if elected. No one in his/her right mind would believe such promises.

But Trump's base did. They voted him into office. Perhaps it has something to do with education.

According to a recent ABC/WSJ poll, among white non-college men Trump's approval rating is 67% vs. Democrats, 22%. In all other categories involving men, women, and college Trump is behind the Democrats, especially among college educated women. In the latter category, Democrats lead Trump 63% to 30%. However, among non-college-educated white women, a group Trump carried by 27 points in 2016 exit polls, he is now trailing.

    https://beta.washingtonpost.com/pol...rt-poorly-educated-they-might-be-turning-him/

Trump is losing America’s suburbs, and his base of support is rural. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/trump-losing-ground-america-s-suburbs-n1041296

    Maybe that explains it.

“We’re putting in a resolution some time in the next week and a half to two weeks [and] we’re giving a middle-income tax reduction of about 10 percent,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “This is not for business, this is for middle income, and that’s on top of the tax decrease that we’ve already given them.”

The date of that remark, Oct. 22, 2018, seventeen days before the election.

Trump told Republican lawmakers Thursday that "sometime this year," he will announce a "substantial tax cut for middle-income folks who work so hard."

"We are working on a tax cut for the middle-income people that is going to be very, very inspirational," the president told House Republicans at their annual retreat in Baltimore. "It's going to be something that -- I think it's what everyone's really looking for."

When will his base ever learn? Well, part of the problem is, they ignore reality they know they won't like. Not one Trump fan has responded to this thread. They largely ignore threads that detail what Trump says, tweets, and does.

That would explain why they still believe everything Trump tells them.

To add a little spice to Trump's "Mexico will pay for the wall!" We now know the U.S. military will pay for the wall. The U.S. Air Force just released a report showing how Trump's reallocation of funds to pay for his wall would "compromise national security."

As this graph shows, most recessions occur during Republican administrations. Recovery occurs during Democratic administrations.

It amazes me why Wall Street likes Republicans.

Thank you. Not a peep out of Trump's supporters. I guess there isn't much for them to say. They got snookered, and they know it.

Obviously because it's about deregulation, short term gains versus long term strategy. Repubs have no problem with creating an environment that allows corruption to promulgate.

It also appears Repubs have an aversion to graphs and data.

The worst of it is, Republicans in Congress, including Mitch McConnell, will let Trump get away with it. They will allow Trump to usurp the power of the purse from Congress.

Congress allocated those funds. Trump is misallocating the funds, and Mitch does nothing.

I take that back. Mitch wants to save a military school in his state. McConnell's spokesman, David Popp told Newsweek that the senator spoke to Esper about Fort Campbell Middle School and "is committed to protecting funding" for the project.

    What a miserable S.O.B..

Is it what this is showing, because a Republican was President during the years 1954, 1958, 1975, 1992, and 2002. And those were all recoveries. The years 1949, 1961, 1967, and 2009 were recoveries under Democratic presidencies... That's not most... That's not even half...

Either you don't understand what your chart is showing, or you just don't understand what peak-to-trough analysis is. Or maybe you don't understand the economic definition of a recovery...

I thought more about what you said. Each of the major recessions occurred during Republican administrations. That was the point I wanted to make.

That said, of the years you mentioned, recovery did begin during Republican administrations.

I apologize for missing this. If you hit bottom during Republican administrations, it stands to reason things will start to get better during Republican administrations. The only way is up.

    That only makes sense.

He hasn't eliminated anything so far, he's been adding to the debt every year. We are now over $22 trillion.

We're dealing with an idiot who thinks that the trade deficit is part of the national debt. "The King of Debt" will only dig us deeper.

Is it possible Trump's supporters have given up? They are nowhere to be seen on this thread highly critical of Trump. That is true of a number of threads that involve Trump. They prefer talking about Democrats and guns, but not Trump.

Polls show 84% of Republicans support Trump. Where are they?

Adding to the National Debt, the Trump administration has doled out billions of dollars in relief to farmers for taking the brunt of the trade war. It's an economic short-term positive deal to fill a gap, but it doesn't fix a long-term problem of not having access to foreign markets.

Rural areas strongly support Trump. Trump screwed his own supporters. How intelligent is that?
