Gun dependency will go the way of cigarette smoking.

You'll see small, banned enclaves of gun addicts furtively fondling their shooties outside of public venues.

Well if they are practically exiles then they would have no place to get their weapons.

That does not bide good for the gun control crowd. Smoking kills around fifteen times as many people as guns and smoking is still legal.

I don't know who your "gun control crowd" might be. The vast majority of Americans who support stricter firearm regulations do not wish to outlaw firearms or cigarettes for those who pleasure themselves with them.

I have never advocated that cigarettes or guns be proscribed. Both must be intelligently regulated in the interests of public safety.

In America, private enterprises are free to enforce policies in the interest of the safety of their customers - smoking, gun toting, etc.

If the laws in that location permit open carry, and Walmart does not have a guns prohibited sign- the responsibility is Walmarts in the first place. I've seen open carry in Walmart several times. Generally, I don't think open carry makes much sense, but concealed carry does. Too many people think seeing a gun without a uniform and badge is like seeing a rattlesnake in you path. That's a state of mind, but fairly common.

And I can agree with that- provided the people who define "intelligently regulated" were intelligent and rational. Therein lies the problems with many kinds of regulations.

Diverse proposals compete in the marketplace of ideas, and there are always those who need to disparage those they don't like.

That is certainly true. Hopefully, the average citizen will be mature and independent enough to examine these ideas wisely- and that capacity is something I see rapidly eroding in our society.

The inordinate level of firearm carnage in the US must be addressed by effective measures that respect the rights of those who must, in turn, respect the needs of the People.

Campaign rhetoric is largely aspirational. Think of Fake Don's promises of "something terrific!" healthcare that "covers everybody!" at "less cost!". his vow to make Mexico pay for his "big, beautiful wall!", his assurances that he would release his tax returns, withdraw all US troops for Afghanistan, rebuild the nation's crumbling infrastructure, eradicate the national debt, etc., etc., etc.

Agreeing to abide by sensible regulations that facilitate the ability to distinguish criminal gunsters from non-criminal gunsters is an admirable start in safeguarding the populace. Dispel the mystique that encourages permissiveness and treat firearms like any other tool such as the automobile.

You asked who the gun control crowd was. I answered.
Would that be the same automobile who kills many times more people than guns?

The gun issue will simply be solved by corporate executives. Since the federal government and several state governments are unwilling to act and the courts are becoming more pro gun.

It's going to end up with guns only being allowed in ones house because like cigs Business will Start making banning them inside and outside of their stores. So looks the capitalism that the right loves so much will be the end of the second amendment not the Democrats/progressives.

That is discrimination against a person for traits they can't control

We often disagree, probably in how we interpret things. How do you define the "needs" of the people? I'm finding in today's society that a large number of people expect the world to change to fit them- nothing should happen that makes them feel fear, for example. This is an issue with many gun control people. Fears are not created by others, they are a reaction we feel that is generated by our own beliefs and mental state. Many have for example a fear of heights or water, which is totally an internal issue. Fear of guns should be replaced with respect for guns as something capable of doing harm. Not much different than a chain saw- a tool, which if not used correctly by a skilled person, is extremely dangerous. Again- the danger comes from the person using the tool, not the tool itself.

I would have no problem with the concept of qualifying a person for gun ownership. Class, test, background check including police and mental issues kind of thing. Person's passing would be issued a license- and we would not be re-qualifying every person buying a gun, often repeating the current background check done several times before. The present approach is kind of like needing to get a new driver's license each time you get in a different car.

I assure you- serious gun owners are usually safety freaks when it comes to gun handling. We would like guns to be unavailable to the the careless, the incompetent and of course the criminals. Currently, the process we use scores poorly in that respect, and more of the same is not going to improve things. Effective is correct- but it makes no sense to do something that accomplishes nothing but creates harassment and difficulties for many. That seems to be the way government tries to "solve" problems.
