is it better to be feared than loved? Is that a cliche or some immutable principle....?

Is it better to be loved than hated?

Is it better to be respected or not?

Is it better to be thought of ad a credulous buffoon , or feared as an erratic buffoon?

is it better to be admired and respected.... or feared like a rabid dog?

 

I would argue it's easier to control people through fear than with love.

Unless one is a child, all decisions involve some use of assumptions, i.e., what we have learned from our experiences and the experiences of others. If you think the the use of assumptions is simple minded then replace the word "assumptions" with "heuristics'.

Since you quote TR, I recommend you see the movie "Wind and the Lion." This movie is not a 100% accurate depiction of history but the key TR line in the movie is, "the fleet sails tomorrow" , i.e., dispatching the US military to deal with the kidnapping of one American.

Many Aus/NZ service personnel don’t know what TF 66 is? I find that hard to believe because Task Force 66 was instrumental in Afghanistan with defeating the Taliban.
