The new design which will be build by Blohm & Voss will be operational in 2032 and consist of 6 ships of this class.

It will be equipped with a railgun system, capable to fire projectiles up to 100 km into space.

The project is part of the new defense program that Germany started, which means a rise of the german defense budget from 1.25 to 1.3% of GDP.

    A whole rise of .05%?

How much are they supposed to rise to be compliant with NATO funding agreements?

You can thank the Frenchman who invented the rail gun, long ago.

The last warship we build works excellent

Name a german warship that didnt work. You wont find it. Our tech usually works quite well.

If you want slur Bismarck. She ripped the british flagship in half with a single shot. She was hunted without support ships and even under heavy fire not a sigle shot penetrated her hull. When James CAmeron dived teh wreck, he found not a single hole in her hull. She sunk herself so she dont ends in enemy hands.

.05% means 6 billion €. Thats quite alot. We dont see any reason to go to 2%, because that would give us 2nd strongest military in the world.

Also you need space in teh yards for such a gigantic project.

What about Bismarck do you think did not work? She was superior to any other design.

She opened her own flood ventils as ordered by her commander, so she doesnt fall into enemy hands.

We can debate about lots of things, but our tech was superior in all aspects.

No, we dont. We have no enemies around us. Who should attack us? Switzerland?

As for non-compliant. We changed the deal. We see 1,35% as upper limit at the moment. More is not needed.

Beside that we dont have the place in the yards to make hundreds of new war ships at same time. And we dont buy abroad.

Her commander was already dead when it scuttled. And even without scuttling, it would have capsized since she was already listing and sinking when they did it.

Railguns have been invented for quite a while and not by the germans.

Do you know why the new German Navy has glass bottom ships?

So they can see the old German Navy!

I hear the thing the Germans were really good at is killing innocent civilians in extermination camps.

The thread title says "battleship". The linked to article says "frigate".

    Staggeringly huge difference.

Yes, railguns have been invented and implemented.

But not to 60 miles in space! Even if those projectiles had no boost to thrust to extend the range, that height and glide capability could give a decent range and provide delay time to have control to be a threat for stable targets and the lower areas for the Space Forces!

The clear advantage for a rail gun is that these would be cheap as dirt compared to the complexity and cost of ballistic missile. Even small countries or large businesses could afford it.

Or to take out satellites Can the world trust Germany given their history?

    Just kidding!

I want every European nation capable of self defense . So we dont have to do it. . As long as Germany will behave and not want to conquer Europe again
