That has not existed in this country for a very long time.

yes, politically motivated crimes should be reclassified as acts of terror or insurrection against America.

enhanced interrogation techniques by the CIA will deter violence.

freedom of expression has consequences for terrorists.

according to the President, it is not 'malicious foreign influences' who are responsible for sowing discord.

we should launch cruise missiles at russia because they will lose a conventional war with America.

that will not escalate into wide-scale violence because neither side wants mutually assured destruction

The answer is simple! There is no solution, other then to be realistic that all politics in every country are subject to tampering by outside Agencies/Governments. The practice of sewing discord for political sway, gain or agenda is older then politics itself! To even entertain that idea it can be controlled or stopped is naive.

The best way to combat propaganda is to educate the people that make the choices, as long as there are people gullible enough to be tricked, incited and driven to violence then there will always be potential for, and will result in violence.. Unfortunately, the best examples we see presently happen to be the left wing party.. Yes, those people ;)

'malicious Trump influences' are responsible for sowing domestic discord.

If the scare don't work then you got to open fire. The only reason secretaries of state have any influence around the world is because there are high capacity rifles and ordnance behind their words.

to be fair, in the small chance that bloomberg/sanders are elected in november it would incite right wing terror for water boardings by lawful government force.

    Meta,
Years ago, I used to teach how language was a tool of propaganda. I ran into the same kind of resistance to that idea as you have with this thread. There are those who will never accept that certain words used in certain ways will trigger certain reactions in us. Every single one of us is susceptible to this kind of manipulation.

-It goes back a long way. I've ranted in other threads recently about 1. how we can look at Ben Franklin's use of fake news and charged language in his newspapers, and 2) how the rise of technology has enabled people to be flooded on a regular basis with information that can be filtered to suit our own bias and echoed 24/7. So, it's been happening for a long time, but now it's supercharged.

-It's also part of our psychology, embedded deep within us. So many studies have been done that show how vulnerable we really are. Frank Luntz was one who focused his study of human reactions to language as a tool of manipulation. He worked to develop a list of words and phrases to help advertisers and politicians "sell" plans. An interesting (but older) look at how advertising has become a science is this Frontline video. Late in the video, Luntz, who worked with Newt Gingrich to develop the party line language Gingrich used to influence politics, does a study on which words will convince people to accept something that they had previously been against. (fast forward to 38:35 for Luntz).

So, where am I going with all this? It's a broad problem with no single solution. All the focus on limiting or controlling the volume and quality of information directed at us is at best a very temporary fix. There's too much to be gained by all this manipulation, so the idea of a virtual wall to keep out the influencers is just a stumbling block for them. Besides, if we listen to how the media justifies the manipulation of reality by claiming it's the truth, even if it's not quite accurate, we can see that holding that industry back would be a tactical and legal nightmare.

That leaves us with us. We are the target of this influence pedaling. We should not see ourselves as victims because that suggests it's not our fault. It is our fault. We fail to think critically. We fail to look at the types of words used to describe and label the world around us. We read what we think is objective news reporting and fail to see how the authors have chosen specific words and phrasings that trigger reactions in us. We fail to realize that we've reacted or which words we've reacted to.

And in this tsunami of information we fall victim to the primal concept of binary thought because we have to simplify it all. We let others interpret it for us. They reduce it down to simple language they know will generate reaction. It's 'us vs. them' over and over until we're convinced that there is a division that must be completed so we can separate ourselves from those folks on the other side who react differently to those trigger words. And then we go to commercial.

Any degree of solution has to start with the acceptance of our own fallibility, and an honest willingness to question our own thinking. I wish I could say we should add some kind of independent fact-checking system to the mix, but fact-checking has become a trigger word.

Step 1 toward stopping foreign interference in US elections: Indict Christopher Steele and start the extradition process.

Trump was even changing the GOP’s stance on Russia closer towards the election.

It really sucks being on the receiving end especially those who had no power to make such decisions but yeah all those coups and regime changes are catching up.

    Not bad.

The only critique I have here is the idea "limiting or controlling the volume and quality of information directed at us" as some kind of "fix".

    This is not a solution.

If you're creating "a virtual wall to keep out the influencers", you yourself are an influencer.

Problems are not solved by restricting other people with your own ideas of what is right or wrong, as long as one is within the confines of the law. Even then such laws that can limit speech can, in and of themselves, become a problem.

Trumpers support foreign interference and attacks on the voting system, as long as they like the results.

If you want to stop foreign influence and the collapse of democracy, dump the trumpers.

Support the right of secession. Red states are almost all shtholes anyway.

Biggest domestic terror threat is white supremacist/nationalist by a country mile.
