Official says US, Taliban reach Afghanistan truce agreement

MUNICH (AP) — A senior U.S. official said Friday the United States and the Taliban have reached a truce agreement that will take effect “very soon” and could lead to withdrawals of American troops from Afghanistan.

The official said the agreement for a seven-day “reduction in violence” to be followed by the start of all-Afghan peace talks within 10 days is “very specific” and covers the entire country, including Afghan government forces. There were indications a formal announcement could come as early as the weekend.

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

I think its time to pull out of Afghanistan.

Americans should not be put in harms way over these backwards goat herders.

 

Let's hope this holds. Trump is the first president in decades to not start new conflicts, now he is really trying to end them.

Excellent news. While there is fear if the enemy regains hold of a substantial government operation, but this administration has already established the legality of barring travel from such States. We needn't any longer follow the neo-conservative doctrine of "fight them over there."

 

We have drones that can loiter around the clock, satellites, etc.

That's essentially what we've been doing for the past 6 years. The problem is as long as we're operating with the Afghani government to allow drone strikes in their country, the Taliban are going to continue to wage war against the state of Afghanistan, which ultimately means Afghanistan will continue to fail as a state, to which we will continue to be called in for ground operations. The end goal is for Afghanistan to be stable enough to defend themselves, but unfortunately it is looking more and more like the only out for us is for the Afghani government to formally recognize the Taliban as a political party, which is currently what is being negotiated between the Taliban and Afghanistan.

That's essentially what the US pulling out of Afghanistan means, because we have failed to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan, and there are no signs of a surrender from them any time soon.

 

Why would 'you' need 'to take action?' Just get 'your' nose out of what does not involve 'you.'

 

Against whom? The only invaders of Afghanistan in recent memory were Russia and now the USA, and 'they' saw the Russians off and they will see the USA off, and what will the USA hold up as the gain for all those lives lost.

Well against the Taliban of course.. that's who we've been fighting this whole time. Afghanistan is a failed state that has been relying on our assistance to prevent the Taliban from taking over the whole country. We've been trying to create stability in Afghanistan, but that stability will never come if they are to remain in indefinite warfare. At this point, the government in Afghanistan has given up on defeating the Taliban, so what they are looking to do now is form a peace treaty in which they formally recognize the Taliban as a political party

Well, that's actually what they're trying to do, which unfortunately is looking more and more like an agreement in which the Afghani government recognizes the Taliban as a political party.

 

Who will protect the poppy crops from the taliban now ?

Someone has been protecting them for 20 years and supplying us with heroin.

And so the Afganistan war has led to nothing. We fought against the Taliban and lost. Now they are going to be in charge again. I hope the women of Afghanistan enjoyed their right to vote while they had it. Cause that's probably going away.

 

I think we need to see our Troops get out of that mess before giving credits out. We have had truces and cease fires before

 

Osama Bin Laden was Al-Qaeda, we haven't been fighting Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan since 2002, our primary focus since then has been fighting the Taliban. Also, when we did finally get Osama, he was in Pakistan, not Afghanistan. If you think we're still in Afghanistan because of Osama, you are WAY behind on your current events.

 

Does it allow them to maintain radical Islamic bases on Afghanistan territory like in 2001? Only if John Kerry negotiated it ...

 

Its looking like there will be a split between the northern/north eastern part of the country at the rest.
