From the Guardian here:Face masks cannot stop healthy people getting Covid-19, says WHO

    Excerpt:

What does prevent catching the virus is to stay well away from it. For us, here in France, that means avoiding large gatherings and proximity to people. Which means be doubly careful if in any closed environment (like a supermarket) where you should be wearing a mask. Especially if a good number are there as well ...

they were insufficient on their own.

    A. They probably protect ME from YOU more than they protect the wearer (although there is some minimal protection there as well)

    B. The N95 and surgical masks need to go to the "front line troops".
I spent the morning making masks from old pillow cases and hair bands. If I do get this horror and carry it around for three or four daysbefore I know I have it...hopefully I'll keep most of it inside my mask. You do the same...OK?

And I keep a bucket of really soapy water in my garage. The minute I get home that mask goes in the bucket and stays there for a day. I'll wash it , rinse it and dry it(wearing gloves) the next day.

    Newsflash...soap KILLS this thing

    WEAR A FRIGGIN MASK!!!

Throw a few WHO higher-ups into a small clinic situation where all their patients are Covid19+ then ask them if they want masks.

So your "expert opinion" is that a mask won't reduce the number of airborne particulates coming from a person breathing and talking normally.

    Openings?

Get a better mask. And press the sides in if you must.

Is the the same WHO that kept quiet on the release of the Wuhan virus for two or three weeks?

Maybe you aughta think about air flow and jets of aerosols spraying out every opening and ask yourself how much safer you really are?

If turning high risk into not as high risk makes you feel safe...........

Is that akin to pulling out?

People should have known all along about respect for other people. If you don't wear a mask in public take along some kind of handkerchief. That way if you cough or sneeze , do it in that. Then wash hands. I have allergies and always carry a napkin or something. People should have known all along not to cough or sneeze on each other. I understand the need for sanitizer on grocery carts these days. I used to never think about it.

Have you seen the cretins that walk around department stores these days ?
You trusting them not to spray you out the side of their poorly fitting masks as they walk by you?
The same people that were beating each other up over TP? The same people that stampede to buy junk on black friday? The same people that drive through high water? The same people who buy generic cigarettes and old english 800?

I have learned to be patient in public areas and try to keep my distance. But at least I can go outside. Been gardening and stuff. I can walk a long way before I see another person on foot. Had a beagle bark at me but even he kept his distance.

Better than no masks at all. Besides, in my case, I've already had the virus. I wear a mask for your protection, because I'm not sure that I'm no longer contagious. It seems the jury is still out on how much time has to pass, or even whether or not I could get reinfected and instead of getting sick again, pass it along to others.

That's good tactic, but it is your tactic not their mask that is benefitting you

I'm glad that makes you feel "safe".
Your feelings are what really counts.

It actually makes a significant difference in the distance of transmission. I read an article that explained the video below but cannot find it... If we can contain the distance of transmission and keep from touching our face (and washing hands) far less stay at home orders would be needed.

Does that make you safe or just lower your risk from high to not as high?

Who cares that your behaviors are keeping you safer than their mask? Probably you, since you are performing the behaviors.

From what I have read it keeps others significantly safer just by using a cloth mask but not completely. N95 masks with proper fit (most people have no idea how to properly fit a mask) also protect the wearer. The only way to get full protection is full PPE.
