Does that make aerosols blasting out of the side of your mask safe?

I think you can't quantify "reduced" risk.

Why would a qualifier make any difference? If the risk is reduced then that it is what matters. Patently obvious! Next time you cross the road, close your eyes, after all having your eyes open only reduces the risk of being run over

"There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit."

That makes no sense. If a mask affords protection for a frontline health worker, as the WHO acknowledges, it affords protection for other human beings, although their risk may well be less.

75% risk is less than 80% risk.
    Both are high.

    Glad you feelz safe.

"A mask" doesn't protect the healthcare worker. The protection only works if that worker (and their colleagues) follow all of the infection control procedures. Having masks, let alone using them, is only one part of that.

A policy recommending (or mandating) that the general public wear masks won't afford any protection either. That will only happen if people can get masks and use them correctly in response to that policy. There is no specific evidence that if such a policy were implemented that it would be followed in a consistent and effective manner (and how much general resistance and social disruption the imposition might create) and therefore no way of knowing whether the overall impact of the policy would be positive, negative or neither.

If these masks are for protecting others more than you, then if you are sneezing/coughing wtf are you doing out of your house? Follow common sense/and the cdc, say the F home. You should do that whether or not there is a pandemic! Nobody wants your cooties!!!

You're finally getting it even with your made up "qualifier". Now which is better 80% risk of getting the virus or 75% risk of getting the virus?

Well it would do on the population on the whole because you don't know who has the virus, the contagious infected people themselves may not know either. The virus will travel further from a contagious non-mask wearer coughing compared to a contagious mask wearer coughing

A healthcare worker is not protected by a mask alone, nor is anyone else.

No one is claiming that a mask is no more effective in reducing the likelihood of transmitting the virus than wearing a bow tie. A mask is acknowledged as affording some degree of protection.
No one is recommending that the general public wear masks and use them incorrectly. Whatever percentage of the general public wear them correctly are afforded some degree of protection. If masks afforded no protection, there would be no sense in healthcare workers or the general public wearing them.

Point to anyone who said a mask gives you 100% protection. You must be pretending to be this slow?

The WHO reprts that it is continuing to look into the science and evidence surrounding face masks, and will update their advice if there are any new findings.

It is not a settled matter, by any means.

Does wearing a mask reduce the chances of a person touching her face, a common, unconscious practice that is believed to contribute to the transmission of this and other viruses?

What I have read has shown a 75%-80% reduction in transmission to others combined with hand washing and not touching the face.

And to answer your question about motorcycle helmets, they have shown to reduce fatalities by up to 37%.
But yes, motorcycles are still an extremely dangerous method of travel.

Nothing reduces risk by 100% all the way down to zero risk. If a mask or bandana contains just 50% of sneeze droplets/mist into the mask material instead of into the air that's a help against the Wuhan virus. I thank everybody who makes the effort.

I read something about the less initial "dose" of the virus you get the better are your odds.

    I don’t understand.
What are they at high risk of being treated with?

Indeed it should. But, here in France, they are not cleaning the caddie handle bars before making them available.

So, if they don't do it in a store, then make sure you have "swipes" with you ...

So what you are saying is they make one-way ("in-only") masks?

    I seriously doubt that.

Have they closed all small outlets where food/drink is available? Because, mask or no-mask it is a high-rate place to get infected given the number of people who enter-and-leave in an hour or even half-hour ...

There are times when I shake my head at the refusal of the lefties to listen and comprehend the facts and timelines presented to them.
I certainly cannot make an exception in your case so I will let you sit in your chair believing what you will. I wish you good luck with your thoughts.
The topic here is face masks and are they useful.
Maybe, but sterile they are not.

It's incredible to me that anyone would suggest that a mask isn't beneficial. This is Twilight Zone speech. It's almost as if they're covertly pushing the herd immunity strategy.

I'm a big fan of visual aides for teaching, so I'm posting this video so we can all understand the trajectory of droplets and aerosol of an uncovered sneeze. The spray containing both droplets (biggies) and aerosol (microscopic) can travel 25 feet.

If the man sneezing is asymptomatic, feels great and doesn't wear a mask, his sneeze can carry aerosol virus to someone standing or sitting 25 feet away from him. The larger particles don't project as far but both the particles and aerosol will adhere to any surface whether it's a box of tissues, a handrail in an escalator or a door handle. This man would be preventing the spread of coronavirus if he had an N95 Hepa filtered mask. It would not prevent the spread if he had a bandana or surgical mask on because aerosol particles pass right through a barrier like a surgical mask or cloth. Remember, doctors in surgery don't wear a mask to protect the patient from their germs, they wear a surgical mask to prevent splash-back of blood or other material coming from the patient.

If there's a person within 25 feet of the sneezing person wearing a surgical mask, that surgical mask will protect that person from the droplets of his sneeze but not from the the aerosol or from the contamination on objects that it landed on. And, it's not only sneezing that contains these droplets and aerosol, it's also contained in coughs.

If everyone in the country was mailed an N95 mask, and if everyone actually wore that mask when they went out of the home among people, the number of infections would undoubtedly fall dramatically. BUT! People also have to be aware of what they can't see or hear and that's those infectious particles that have dried up from an infection person who sneezed five or even ten days before they touched where his particles landed and dried. That's why hand washing is vital and not touching your face anywhere is essential. That's a habit we all need to break -- face touching. Touch a handrail, elevator button, shopping cart etc., then scratch or blow your nose or fix your lipstick or scratch your face -- that's all it takes to transfer a virus into your system.

We need to put on our Superman X-Ray vision and imagine those invisible micro-particles.
