Now that you mention it, I too was glad I made it home. During much of my sea duty, the nearest land was straight down and carriers do not have nearly enough life-preservers.

Crystal clear. I never saw a shot fired, during 18 total months within that combat zone. I am not a hero. I served a country I loved and still love and in all spent six years seeing wondrous places like two years in Japan, my base only four short train stops from Kamakura and the seated Daibutsu most folks wrongly call the Great Buddha.

It could have been some grotty little tin can behind that city-sized ship. I got lucky, I admit it. But I actually did learn the meaning of comparing cultures. In 1970 I was an occupier. They taught me far more than I did them.

Military services offer top-grade professional training which major companies willingly hire someone for having. The service pays the student. No loans or crushing interest are involved. It allows a way to build a nest egg and extends military health care after active duty under prescribed conditions and little fee increase.

Thank me? I thank the U.S. Navy. Literally several times a week. It changed my life and my worldview and I can not recommend military service in any branch strongly enough, for any young man or woman who wants to see the meaning of true adventure.
