Florida official who opposed local mask mandate in ‘critical condition’ with COVID-19

    https://www.rawstory.com/2020/07/fl...-mandate-in-critical-condition-with-covid-19/

A public official in Florida who voted against a resolution requiring people wear face masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus is now in critical condition after being infected by the disease.

Local news station News 4 Jax reports that St. Johns County Commissioner Paul Waldron has been hospitalized after being diagnosed with COVID-19, and his daughter posted on Facebook late last week that he went into septic shock and has “many organs struggling.”...

If not used properly, they can do more harm than good, And people constantly touching them (and probably reusing them too much) and have their noses exposed. Yep, constantly touching them and then touching God knows what else.

Masks do not prevent the spread of covid-19... Covid-19 is an airborne virus that can survive in open air for hours. A virus is smaller than the pores of a mask. Masks have openings (not tight fitting around face) and are regularly taken on and off. Viruses can infect a person by means other than through the nose or mouth... and on and on and on...

Agreed, so if you are not performing a sterile procedure on someone, or sanding/woodworking/working in dust/pollen/etc, then there's no reason to wear one, and wearing one can only do more harm than good.

And that is true if you do not wear a mask also

no one has claimed it was or is a perfect solution

Let me say this again for the 1,203,125th time. Cloth masks do NOT protect YOU. A 3 ply or N95 mask blocks 99.9% of all virus micro-particles in aerosolized droplets.

Masks aren't for YOU, masks are for me, him, her, or whoever you get close to in order to protect THEM from YOU! Are you getting this yet? Do I really need to repeat this for the 1,203,126th time?

We all know about the size of aerosol particles, we get that. Now, do your part and put on the RIGHT mask to protect OTHERS.

    These are the statistics on how far a cough travels;

    No Mask - 8 feet
    Bandana - 3.6 feet
    Handkerchief 1.25
    Cone mask 8 inches
Stitched mask with two layers, 2.5 inches

The mask denial is strong, everywhere.

And I think it all stems from 2 things.

One, people don't like that they are being told to wear one.

Two, people don't want to be uncomfortable.

And that's it. Two extremely minor issues are preventing millions of people from doing something simple that helps protect the people around them.

In my socialsphere, some of the same people who refuse the mask are folks who decry the younger generations for being too selfish and too immature. I'm sure other people know folks that fit that bill too.

While they aren't necessarily wrong about their criticisms of younger generations, they sure don't seem to understand the sad irony and the fact that they ought to be including themselves in their criticisms.

There is no reason that a person refuses to wear a mask(or a face shield if masks are too restrictive) that isn't born of selfishness and immaturity. And that's it.

If you're going to refuse it, own what it makes you.

"Face masks are worn by all operating room personnel when treating patients susceptible to infections as in neurosurgery, vascular, and orthopedic procedures involving implants and regional anesthesia procedures (e.g. , spinal or epidural). Face masks are also used to protect staff from contamination. All personnel wear face masks when taking care of trauma patients or patients with blood-borne infections." https://anesthesiology.pubs.asahq.org/article.aspx?articleid=2085803

When doctors don a surgical mask to do surgery that the masks they wear is not solely for the protection of the patient, it's for the protection of the surgical staff from the patient. Splashes and splatters happen during surgery, similar to an infected covid-19 person that sneezes towards you. Those large particles are blocked by pretty much any material, it's the smaller aerosol particles that get through a mask with only one layer of protection.

It's a hell of a stupid time to stand on a high horse and shake a fist screaming about rights to not wearing a mask.

You are not near as inclined to be touching your face, without one.

Simple answer, don't touch the mask. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer and use it if you need to touch the mask. There's a solution for every conceivable problem you can concoct.

There is absolutely no way to know that if he had used a mask that he wouldn't get covid. What's the argument?

A simple cloth mask enhanced with 2 folded tissues can be as effective as an N95 or even a full face N99.
A spray bottle with 70% isopropyl alcohol can clean your hands, surfaces you want to touch, and even your cloth mask in a pinch.

It's not all that hard to stay safe.

Exactly, plenty of healthcare workers have gotten the virus and they are using masks, gloves and are trained in keeping items from being contaminated.

In my state, those that aren't wearing a mask are barred at the entrance from coming in the store. That's the only way to do it.

My point is, people are not trained in there proper use. I wore one, I will wear one if a store is crowded. I watched tons of people fiddling with them.

Well what the hell? I see 10 year old kids wearing face masks, did they need some sort of special education? People can get it right with practice, loop it over your ears and cover the mouth and nose. How difficult is that? Since March, we have been given thousands of pieces of information about masks, what type to use, what protects the best, when to use them, how long to wear one before disposing it, how not to touch the mask or your face, wash your hands after handling the mask.

I mean this is first grade education stuff, not rocket science.
