The Pentagon has ordered the 159-year-old independent military newspaper Stars and Stripes to come up with a shutdown plan by September 15 and stop publishing by September 30. The news — and a bipartisan group of senators’ plea to save the paper — was reported on Wednesday. This morning, USA Today reported on the memo in which Colonel Paul R. Haverstick, Jr., director of the Defense Media Activity, issued the shutdown order.
The plan for dissolution, due by September 15, should include a “specific timeline for vacating government-owned/leased space worldwide,” he wrote, and “the last newspaper publication (in all forms) will be September 30, 2020.”

    Wow.

As if the Atlantic article wasn't enough of a slap in the face to the Military, Trump wants to shut down this legendary Military Newspaper.

    What is Trump thinking?

He never served himself, and he obviously has no respect for the sacrifice of others.

    Hopefully, this decision gets reversed.

Are you in favor of the decision to cease publication?

Or would like to see the decision reversed?

Bipartisan Coalition of Senators have written a letter to ask for reversal:

A coalition of Republican and Democratic senators are calling on the Defense Department to reinstate funding for Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent military newspaper whose future was put in doubt earlier this year after the Pentagon proposed shifting money away from the outlet.
In a letter sent to Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Wednesday, the senators argued that funding for the newspaper represented a tiny fraction of the department's annual budget and that cutting it could have a "significantly negative impact on military families."

More attempts to circulate and reference a fake news story. This happened months and months ago. Now because of a current fake news story about Trump - this is being brought up and connected to keep the lie going.

Earlier this year, Pentagon proposed cutting all of the newspaper's $15 million annual subsidy for the 2021 fiscal year, but Congress has not approved it. The House approved funding for Stars and Stripes, while the Senate version of the fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act does not have funding for it. A joint version of the legislation is expected to be ironed out this fall.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper defended the proposal to pull funds for Stars and Stripes, noting that the military could use that money to prioritize different programs.

"We trimmed the support for Stars and Stripes because we need to invest that money, as we did with many, many other programs, into higher-priority issues," he said during a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels in February.

This has NOTHING TO DO WITH TRUMP. The congress has not settled on authorizing funding for the Stars and Stripes and the money is being allocated elseware.

Trump only wants message to come across why do you think he sends his lawyer bill barr over to fox to try to get them fired. That wont fly right now at other places but give him time he will **** everything down that talks baf about him that way he can do anything. Hopefully his supporters will realize that before that time but j doubt it
Maybe when he comes for their guns they will cant have absolute control with so many guns out there.

Considering the way that he threw the entire armed forces under the bus with his insulting comments in the Atlantic article, he probably figured it won't matter what else he does.

Trump has (already) lost the Military Vote.

So, he probably figured it won't matter. :salute:

Yup - I posted why its fake and what the goal is. Its very transparent. An actual event is being used to re-inforce a lie. Its classic lefty journalism and it used to work... but its been done so much now that people see right through it.

Having multiple family members on active duty I can say without a doubt the military is probably 95% behind Trump.

    Its completely fake.

“What animal would say such a thing?” Trump asked.

“If people really exist that would have said that, they’re lowlifes and they’re liars,” Trump said. “And I would be willing to swear on anything that I never said that about our fallen heroes. There is nobody that respects that more.”

Several members of the White House team, who were present for the trip, also publicly denounced the story on Twitter.

“The Atlantic story on Donald Trump is total BS,” wrote former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders. “I was actually there and one of the people part of the discussion – this never happened.”

Sanders said she was “disgusted” by the attack published in The Atlantic, recalling the moments that President Trump met with veterans.

“These were some of the moments I witnessed the President show his heart and demonstrate how much he respects the selfless and courageous men and women of our military,” she said.

Jordan Karem, the president’s body man during the trip, also weighed in on Twitter.

“Again, this is 100% false. I was next to the president the whole day!” he wrote. “The President was greatly disappointed when told we couldn’t fly there. He was incredibly eager to honor our Fallen Heroes.”

Senior adviser to the president, Stephen Miller, who was also present for the trip, described the story as a “despicable lie.”

“The president deeply wanted to attend the memorial event in question and was deeply displeased by the bad weather call,” he said in comments to the Washington Examiner.

Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Dan Scavino also said he was with the president after the trip was canceled due to bad weather.

“There is literally not one thing ‘reported’ from France that is accurate or true, 100% complete lies!” he wrote. “This is a politically motivated hit piece, on the President of the United States, 60 days before a presidential election. A total disgrace!!”

The Washington Examiner published an email from Secret Service detailing the decision to cancel the 2018 event.

White House official has sent an image of redacted email apparently showing "bad weather call" was indeed cause of Trump not attending Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in 2018.

Dan Scavino and Stephen Miller were also both there – and deny Atlantic storyhttps://t.co/jQNgHX0Fd7 pic.twitter.com/Gzre4oYEs9

Today Stars and Stripes is printed at sites around the world and delivered daily to troops — even those on the front lines, where the internet is spotty or inaccessible. As the “local paper” for the military, it provides intensive and critical coverage of issues that are important to members of the nation’s armed services and “cuts through political and military brass BS talking points,” Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a Marine veteran, told Military.com.

So far, the Senate hasn’t acted. But in a letter released earlier this week, 15 members of the chamber, including combat veteran Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., and four Republicans, called on Defense Secretary Mark Esper to “take steps to preserve the funding prerogatives of Congress before allowing any such disruption to take place.”
In a separate letter, Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and Trump ally, makes a similar request. “As a veteran who has served overseas, I know the value Stars and Stripes brings to its readers,” he wrote, telling Esper that shutting down the paper before the Senate acts would be “premature.”

I don't consider the statements of the White House team credible unless there are other independent sources due to Trump's past invalid and even irrational statements.

If Congress wants the paper to continue, it should fund the paper. Trump should come out and state the obvious: "I love the Stars and Stripes, I read it all the time. The house version of the bill has funding but the Senate doesn't. All we're doing is preparing as though the funds won't be there. If Congress wants the paper to continue, reconcile the bill with the proper funding and I'll sign it into law. Plain and simple".

In the President's apathy, his views have gone unheard. Only through subtle actions or reports out of the WH. That's my biggest grip with Trump. He's too apathetic.

Well, sorry then, can't help you. Apparently you are more inclined to believe some patently ridiculous fabrication by a Trump hating journalist with a track record of nothing but partisan hatred rather than the much more believable and obvious reality of the situation. I've got a bridge for sale if you are interested...
