I'm sorry but WTF is going on in this country??!! First of all the article title is wrong. I saw nothing that said the books are banned. I DID see that teachers won't be allowed to have them as part of their curriculum....that's a different thing. You want to read it, go to the school library. There is a reason that these are considered "classics". If blacks want a different perspective then right a damn book. On a different angle to all this nonsense it's like saying Columbus didn't discover America because it was always there. I don't see anyone saying Madame Curie didn't discover Xrays because they were always there.

I understand your point and know that books are available to everyone, but a text taught in school is analysed and digested in a way that a reader may not experience.

The picture contrasts the ideas behind banning the book: On one hand FICTION is being banned because of feelings; on the other blatant racism is there for all to see and the left won't call that scale busting racist for what she is.

Steinbeck grew up in Salinas in the Central Coast of California. His writings are almost all from his own experiences living there between 1910-1935. He was a brilliant American writer and his stories all had a lot of truth, wit and wisdom woven into them. Anyone who ever considered his writings as Communist is an imbecile. (and yes there were/are a lot of them) He and his works are American Treasure. Definitely one of the greatest of American writers.

Slightly off topic but related.
I think we are too scared to have our kids hear or read ideas that are polar opposite of what we taught them for 14 years. Its a big mistake not to allow disparate views discussed with passion in a school setting prior to access to a college campus that they may never get near. Its equally important that our kids hear other flesh and blood authority figures may have a very different view of the world from the one their parents provide. It is seen as 'the school' abusing its authority in teaching alternative values or selling propaganda when its about a teacher, a person saying 'I believe X with just as much passion as your parents believe 'Y'. My parents thought it was a great idea and encouraged it. So did I. The fact it is an authority figure the students may trust expressing it, is a blessing not a curse on a young exploring mind.

Let their mind be blown by what Mr. Jones said about the Vietnam war or the Women's movement or Ronald Reagans supply side vision. I practically begged my Daughters conservative teacher to present a William F Buckley seminar, if he wanted in from my girl. She deserved to hear it from an intelligent likable decent person, not some TV or radio commentator. . its not a scary process. It may even be overdue.

 

Not quite directly on point. My premise is that there is value in the youth minister disagreeing with the minister or the parent on a matter of scripture, or a teacher or other important role model disagreeing with a parent on an issue of the day. Do you tell them what YOU think, if asked or do you dodge and weave, seeing it as irrelevant to the process you encourage through others or just inviting those irate phone calls to your boss?

Don't forget the various campaigns across America waged against Harry Potter by various conservative groups - including lawsuits. Many, many more such examples exist.

Americans have long had a censorious streak, and conservatives work as hard at it as anyone, if not harder. Any attempt to paint this phenomenon as belonging soley to any particular political position is either profound and willing ignorance or an outright lie.
