I am interested in politics and love to learn. I like conversation and try to always be polite.

I never avoid answering a question or addressing a point. (not personal stuff obviously)

I look forward to talking to you all.

Welcome, the more the merrier. The moderators see to the politeness here so any barbs you deliver need be worded, shall we say, "judiciously". As for "...never avoid answering a question or addressing a point", be aware that there are those here who love drawing you into a pointless AND endless game of "prance around the maypole" so to speak. That said, welcome again, you'll have fun here, I sure do.

Welcome... good objectives you stated for your reason to join us. Hope you enjoy learning but bet on it. I like this site but I do take a break from time to time. So if you need a break now and then it's ok. Good luck..

Good to have you. What is your fundamental political orientation? Answer correctly or you will be banned.

    Just kidding.

We mostly have moderate conservatives/Republicans, liberal/Democrats, and a few Libertarians. Basically our divide is "Trump is Hitler" versus "No he isn't." Kinda boring.

I'm philosophically Libertarian and operationally conservative. I don't see many Monarchists, Greens or Communists for some reason. Maybe I'm color-blind.

    Hi All.
    And thanks for the welcome.
I'm a Brit in Britain, so my political orientation will be a little offset to yours. But as with most folk its a mixed bag.
I am a successful business man so I ought to be Conservative, but pain in my early life lead me to be sympathetic to those not so lucky as myself, so that makes me a bit of a leftie as well.
Whoever heard of a successful businessman saying the rich should pay more tax:)

Mostly I try to make my choices on evidence and history. So I see Trump as bad for America, but understand the desire for change that lead to his victory.

Just FYI, Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor, supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. So Dems have plenty of support in the business class. I never particularly liked Trump, and I knew he was out of his depth in 2016 due to inexperience and ignorance of how the government machine works. His answers were too vague.

But I came to sympathize with him because the opposition is so over the top. He's Hitler, see? And a Russian spy. Simultaneously.

I think the democrats are nearer to our conservatives and our Labour left of most Americans. But I take your point. Plenty of rich folk believe in a welfare state.
Trump being Hitler and a Russian spy? Maybe some comedic quotes, but certainly no worse than Trumps own words on others.
For me Trump removed the word statesman from the description of a president. This would not have been that bad if his rough edged policies to drain the swamp had been fair and equal, but it quickly became apparent that Trumps swamp contained only those who disagreed with him.

Hmm, the idea that conservatives are not sympathetic to the less fortunate may be caused by the influence of BBC and the Guardian in your country :) LOL just kidding.

Not sure about the UK but in the US (and Kazakhstan that I represent on this forum ;) ) the conservatives and the liberals are equally sympathetic, the difference is the liberals are offering welfare, the conservatives are offering opportunity, the libs will give you a hug and explain that it's not your fault, the conservatives will give you a kick in the ass and demand that you don't give up, get up and fight for your future.

My experience is different to yours. Conservatives I know (The rich ones anyway) are always justifying not helping the poor.
Try mentioning raising taxes and see the chairs knocked over in the rush for the door. :hiding:

    Welcome!

Pick any topic and jump in.

The following has served me well here:

'That's dumb' is an attack against an argument and (so far) is allowed.

'You're dumb' is an attack against a person and not allowed.

You're right, if you think raising the taxes helps the poor you're indeed a bit of a leftie, just like you said :D

    Thank you.
I disagree, taxes are a good way of transporting money from those with to those without.

In the US (and Kazakhstan) taxes are a good way of transporting money from those with to those in Washington DC. :)

Anyway, this is probably not the best forum to debate policies, welcome again and see you around.

Elections and Campaigns, "The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress"

It's about replacing the Welfare Plantation System.

The problem with the Democratic Party helping the downtrodden programs
is they place costs unfairly on working people who for decades
struggle harder and harder to stay even.
    ObamaCare is a prime example.
We now have 2 parties of Wall St. and not one of Main St.

I am unfamiliar with the American tax system, so I need to read up a bit. But in principle are you saying that the rich are not taxed enough? (should I move this to an appropriate thread?)

In the days of Eisenhower the saying was
a raise would boost you into a higher tax bracket
and you would net less. Never happened. Remember Ike built
    FREEways, not toll roads.

Today they confound the discussion by speaking to
how much some uber rich pays in taxes rather than % of income.
It started with JFK bipartisan tax cuts and all those following to today.
Hardly dinner and a movie for us with loss of services.
And a concentration of the nation's wealth unseen since the late 1800's.
The solution then was Progressive taxation. Last seen with Ike.

If you start a thread, let me know please.
Taxes should be an equally painful experience,
    not a one price ticket.

I would start a new thread, but either I haven't been here long enough or I'm to stupid to see how?

However in principle I agree with you, the wealth gap has become obscene.
