The interesting part about the bet was that if the battery weren’t finished in time, there would be no charge! Boom tish!
    Really, that was the bet.

Australia, plating the desert with solar panels.

    https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/australia-ambitious-16-billion-solar-170000693.html
Australia’s Ambitious $16 Billion Solar Project
    Will Be The World’s Biggest

The world’s most ambitious renewable energy project to date is the proposed Australia–ASEAN Power Link. This project would combine the world’s largest solar farm, the largest battery, and the longest undersea electricity cable. The 10 gigawatt (GW) solar farm would cover 30,000 acres in Australia’s sunny Northern Territory. That is about the equivalent of 9 million rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. The solar farm would be paired with a 30 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery storage facility to enable round-the-clock dispatch of renewable power.

It’s not enough to build a solar farm in the middle of nowhere if you can’t get the power out. The project currently envisions an 800-kilometer high-voltage overhead power line to transmit 3 GW to Darwin on the northern coast of Australia’s Northern Territory. From there,
it would transfer to a 3,700 km 2.2 GW undersea power line to Singapore. Sun Cable, a Singapore-based company founded in 2018, is behind the proposed $16 billion project. . .

    I broadly agree.

However, correct me if wrong, I only briefly glanced but isn't this Australia exporting power? The reason it's a Singapore company ( coughing up the experimental dollars I might add) , is probably because they desperately need the power and therefore have the incentive. Who will own the land? What is the cost benefit analysis for Australia? More details needed!

Edit update: and correct me if I'm wrong, I only have a couple of minutes, but the company looks if not wholly Australian, certainly Australian-led. Hardly an "Asian invasion"?

Sun Cable was founded in 2018 by the lead executives David Griffin, Mac Thompson and Fraser Thompson.

    China Blacklist Strands More Than
    50 Ships With Australian Coal

More than $500 million worth of Australian coal is on ships anchored off Chinese ports, as a diplomatic spat between the two countries cuts into trade, idles a portion of the world’s dry bulk carriers and threatens to spiral into a humanitarian crisis.

More than 50 vessels have been waiting a month or longer to offload coal from Australia, according to separate analyses of shipping data conducted by Bloomberg and data intelligence firm Kpler. There’s about 5.7 million tons of coal and approximately 1,000 seafarers on the anchored vessels, which are mostly Capesize and Panamax-sized vessels, according to Kpler.

Maybe it is a GREEN sign from the Lord
Australia, Stop Dependence On Coal Exports.

    The Shame of Australia :(
    Or just another one?

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/platypus-habitat-shrunk-22-since-064929047.html
Platypus habitat 'has shrunk by 22%' since 1990

The habitat loss amounted to 22% - or about 200,000 sq km (77,000 sq miles) - since 1990, according to the team from the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

"Protecting the platypus and the rivers it relies on must be a national priority for one of the world's most iconic animals," said lead author Professor Richard Kingsford.

"There is a real concern that platypus populations will disappear from some of our rivers without returning, if rivers keep degrading with droughts and dams."

I know. There’s an ongoing battle between green minded folk and the ones who want to slash and burn, and put up little boxes.

it’s worsened too since the bushfires which have destroyed huge areas of habitat for native insects, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians etc.

    Invasive wasp species forcing aeroplanes
    (aeroplane What is that aboot?)
    to abandon take-off in Australia

Planes were forced to abandon take-off and, in some cases, return shortly after departure in a series of incidents at Brisbane Airport, prompting research behind a study published in the journal PLOS One on Thursday.

An experiment found that the invasive species Pachodynerus nasidens was building nests in aircraft speedometers, blocking the instruments within minutes of the wasps beginning construction. Certainty about speed is vital to safety particularly during take-off and landing.

Are we ready for an Australia - China conflict?
    More importantly is Australia ready!

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/australia-approves-tough-veto-powers-034956249.html

Australia approves tough new veto powers
over foreign agreements amid China row

    Wed, December 2, 2020, 7:49 PM PST

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's parliament on Thursday passed legislation giving the federal government power to veto any agreement struck with foreign states, a move likely to anger China and intensify a bitter diplomatic spat between the two countries.

The law allows the Commonwealth to block any agreement between Australian states, councils or institutions and a foreign government, such as a controversial 2018 deal between the state of Victoria and China.

"Australia's policies and plans, the rules that we make for our country are made here in Australia according to our needs and our interests," Prime Minister Scott Morrison
    told reporters in Canberra.

Under the terms of the new law, the foreign minister can veto any agreements with foreign governments if they "adversely affect Australia’s foreign relations" or are "inconsistent with Australian foreign policy".

One deal expected to come under the spotlight is Victoria's participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which Morrison said weakens the federal government's ability to control foreign policy.

Beijing has also take umbrage at Canberra's blocking of a recent agricultural deal, its barring of Chinese tech giant Huawei from its 5G network and legislation outlawing foreign interference in Australia's domestic politics.

China has blocked billions of dollars worth of Australian exports from lobsters to wine in recent months, all the while refusing to accept phone calls from Australian ministers.

Last year Australia’s New South Wales state scrapped a Chinese-funded language programme in schools amid fears over foreign influence. . . .

What "Victoria's participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative"?

Reads like the PM is taking Moi's Australia FIRST advocacy to

Any forecast for the new Australian military budget?

China rattles its sabre, but still needs Aussie ore
China has blocked Australian lobster, beef, timber and more recently wines in their latest trade spat, its iron ore demand is keeping the island :angered: nation's economy humming.

Australia exports more than half the world's iron ore. Even if China were forced to make purchases from non-Australian producers, it would still be short about 30% of the volumes it needs, Mathieu Savary, a strategist at Canada-based Bank Credit Analyst, noted.

    Ah - HA,

China, lift barriers to Aussie lobster, beef, timber and wines
or face Iron Ore shortages :woot:

Someone told me that the way to pull China into line was to close down the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

WHY DOES CHINA NEED HONG KONG AS IT IS?
While China still has extensive capital controls and often intervenes in its financial markets and banking system, Hong Kong is one of the most open economies in the world and one of the biggest markets for equity and debt financing.

The size of Hong Kong’s economy may only be equivalent to 2.7% of mainland China’s now, down from 18.4% in 1997 when it reverted to Chinese rule, but the territory punches above its weight due to its world-class financial and legal systems.

All that is possible due to its unique system of governance.

Under the ‘one country, two systems’ formula agreed as part of Britain’s handover of the territory to China, Hong Kong is guaranteed liberties which are unavailable on the mainland such as freedom of expression and an independent judiciary.
    ........

Chinese banks hold more assets in Hong Kong -- $1.1 trillion in 2018 -- than lenders from any other region, according to Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s data compiled by Natixis. That figure equates to roughly 9% of China’s GDP.

Losing such a massive financing channel risks destabilizing the already slowing Chinese economy, hurting confidence that the Communist Party can continue to deliver prosperity after a strong, decades-long track record. Among other deep linkages, Hong Kong’s port continues to handle a hefty share of China’s exports and imports, and the city was also China’s largest trade partner in services in 2018 with its market share of over 20% topping the U.S.’s 17%, China’s Commerce Ministry says.

Hong Kong also has been pivotal to China’s longer-term ambition to turn the yuan into a widely-used international currency, competing with the U.S. dollar. While still a long way out, achieving that goal would increase the world’s stake in China’s success, as well as Beijing’s influence.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/scientists-artificially-cool-planet-stave-110003837.html
Should scientists artificially cool the planet
    to stave off climate catastrophe?

Another idea is to pump salt water from oceans into the air, forming water droplets that would make marine clouds brighter and thus more reflective. Australia is funding research, hoping enhanced clouds could cool water temperatures enough to save the already damaged Great Barrier Reef.

    Good luck with that, Australia.
Creating great outback fresh water lakes is the answer.

    Solar ocean water desalination.
Solar powered pipe aqueduct to prepared basins.
Good for farming, climate and ecosystems too

Sit down, you sook': Premier Daniel Andrews unleashes on MP who accused him of bullying

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has hit back at a Liberal MP who accused him of bullying during question time.

During the heated exchange, MP for Warrandyte Ryan Smith said he was “tired of the bullying we get from the Premier”, NCA News Wire reported.

The Premier snapped back at Smith by saying: “Sit down, you sook”.

    It's your stagnating parliamentary system.

You get the PM most senior, senile, bought of each party.
How different could they be considering the money involved.
And should you have an outstanding governor,
he / she has no chance to lead the nation.

Australia needs popular vote, party primaries
to boost a candidate beyond the current seniority system.

Examining a list of :flagus: presidents
you might notice how few were ever in Congress.
And the best ones never were.
