SNIP On the campaign trail, Joe Biden guaranteed his White House would "look like the country." As he enters the White House, he's taking steps towards keeping that promise -- assembling a historically diverse slate of top-level nominees. Half of the president-elect's Cabinet picks are women, and the majority are people of color. Biden has noted that many of his selections would be pioneers in their roles -- including the first woman to serve as treasury secretary, the first Black defense secretary, the first openly gay man confirmed to a Cabinet role and the first Native American Cabinet secretary. ENDSNIP https://abc7ny.com/biden-administra...s-list-science-team-stimulus-package/9811612/ I think it would be useful to have a single thread on Current Events to discuss all of the Biden picks to help him run the government, which can also be used to post voting results for those confirmations and notable dissents. Obviously, the full list is in the link, and is too large to post in a thread. If the PF.com mods disagree, this can certainly be moved to another forum, but these votes will be going on for a solid month or more, so I find them all current events and might avoid a bunch of one-off threads on each nominee. I will start with the first 2 voting approvals 1/20 - Avril Haines as DNI, 84-10 1/22 - Lloyd Austin as SecDef, 95-2 For the Austin vote, it was Josh "Insurrection" Hawley (UST) and Mike Lee (UT) voting no For my question, who will be the Biden selection who will have the hardest road to confirmation?? Tanden? Garland? Mayor Pete?
Obviously, they will all get through the Dem. Senate. IF Trump hadn't had Purposely CAUSED the Senate Losses in GA, there might have been some intrigue. My fave is Jen Granholm. ^She's My Girl. Let's hope they will all get through, but how much fighting will go on for some of them?... for instance, the Hawley questioning of the DHS (I gotta learn to spell his name without looking it up) - Mayorkas... They all aren't going to be as smooth as these first 2 went...
Oh yeah. The GOP Senators who want to "put them through the ringer", will get their chance. But I certainly don't expect any nominations to be withdrawn, etc.
Next on the list seems to be Yellen, maybe by COB today... SNIP The Senate Finance Committee voted 26-0 in favor of Janet Yellen’s appointment as the 78th secretary of the Treasury, with an anticipated move to the Senate floor for confirmation before the end of day on Friday (Jan. 22) ENDSNIP https://www.pymnts.com/politics/2021/janet-yellen-gets-senate-committee-nod-for-treasury-secretary/
I've been looking for a list of a hearing schedule, but cannot find one... Chuck is too busy talking about boners to get that out. In an unrelated comment, I've been watching the latest press conference from Psaki this afternoon and I'm currently bored out of my skull.. AMERICA IS BACK!!!
In Congress's political desire to show off a 'unity' government that only temporarily exists in that the Washington lifers will give them exactly the sort of inside connections that they want, I fully anticipate a lot of his cabinet picks being approved. Simply put, a Democratic Senate will lead it through but also Republicans need to earn brownie points back so there won't even be as much historic opposition. The only way there's any controversy is if Democrats start to say "hold on" about a nominee. And because of the optics, they won't do that. We're getting our 'diverse cabinet', whether we like it or not.
