Trump was acquitted. So what's the problem?

"Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) finds himself in the firing line back in his home state after he voted to convict ex-President Donald Trump in the Senate impeachment trial on Saturday, with the North Carolina Republican Party now making plans to censure the senator on Monday night.

Kyshia Lineberger, who serves as the national committeewoman for the state’s GOP, told the Raleigh News and Observer on Sunday that Burr had “betrayed the trust of his constituents” with his vote."

    https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/nc-gop-moves-to-censure-burr-over-surprise-vote-to-convict-trump

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/14/gop-senators-who-voted-to-impeach-trump-facing-heat-at-home.html

Senate Repubs did what Senate Repubs do. Give no weight to the evidence while basing their vote on their own electoral prospects. Seeing as the former Adulterer-in-Chief maintains an iron grip of the majority of his cult following what their self-serving choice was going to be was obvious from the start.

Cult members in numerous states are not happy being reminded not all Repubs are sellouts. Not all Repubs have sworn undying allegiance to a would be despot who tried to steal the election. They don't like what they see in the mirror so they're attacking the people holding it up in front of them.

Does it never dawn on leftist that when we vote for people we expect them to at least pretend that they care about the wishes and desires of those who put them in office. Burr decided to kiss the ass if the DC insiders lobby instead if represent his constituents. So he is catching a bit of righteous wrath and deserves it.

Oh and for what it's worth their was no evidence of Trump wrong doing just a bunch emotion based horse crap that was only vaguely attached to reality.

No, I expect my congressman and senators to vote on the basis of the evidence as presented and their conscience, not any kind of blind party ideology.

You have constituents you don't represent their wishes eventually you're going to have to find an honest job. It's called a REPRESENTATIVE republic for a reason, you know.

Oh and for what it's worth not one person who voted guilty in the impeachment farce voted his conscious. You cannot vote that which you do not have.

Having failed at making Trump the dictator of this country, they are going for second best option: make him the dictator of the Republican Party.

Politically beneficial for the Democratic Party. But ultimately Trump might manage to make the Democratic Party the ONLY major party in the country. And that's not good for the nation.

There's no denying that what the GOP has become is abhorrent. The only solace the rest of America can count on is precisely what 4 years of a Rump administration accomplished -- nothing. Considering the Rump's toxicity, it is highly unlikely he will ever rise to anywhere near the power he had as president. In fact, without Twitter, he's pretty much voiceless.

As for his minions and the spineless GOP that supported him, they will continue to boast and flail around for some time, at least until next year, and then they will begin to realize they represent only a small portion of America. With the avalanche of lawsuits that will keep the Rump in court for years to come, and with Never Rumpers aiming to create a new conservative party to exorcise the orangeness from conservatism, the Rump party will fail and fade away in time. However, we will need to keep our guard up, because we can never allow this sort of rabid extremism to ever grab a hold of our republic again.

I think that besides being afraid to go against Trump because they have toi many nut jobs within their constituencies, Republicans greatly fear that if they don't keep kissing the royal Trumpian ring, he'll start a new party. If that happens, the GOP is finished.

To both sides of the aisle: I am sick to near death of this endless cowtowing to the vagaries of public opinion. You were all elected to do a job. Do that job and stop trying to keep that job above all other considerations.

Mitch told the truth. He announced to the entire world that trump is guilty and the Senate sold out on a technicality [which wasn't even valid].

I couldn't agree more. One would think level headed Repubs would recognize the damage Trump has done to the party. He stands as the only prez in history to lose the popular vote twice, lose the Senate and House during his term, and be impeached twice with the majority of voters favoring conviction. Yet because in many states the party apparatus is in the hands of loyalists those who voted their conscience.....and the evidence......have become heretics.
If they ever hope to regain traction with the political middle one would think they'd realize Don needs to be condemned and ostracized. That aspiring autocrats have no place in American politics. Yet they are still kissing the ring.

Right. But the purity police are on the prowl now. The heretics must be cast out.

Emphasis mine, it goes much farther than that. People need to accept that the ideological divide is too great. THEY don't want the same country WE do, and not by a long shot. We are no longer one nation. It is time to stop pretending we are. This is why I believe the ONLY hope to avoid a very long and bloody civil war is to agree to allow secession. Develop another framework for the States to act in our collective best interests while mostly eliminating the Federal Government. Issues like defense are clearly in the interest of everyone. But when it comes to social issues, there is no reconciliation possible. And frankly I am sick of carrying red states financially. Without us they are nothing more than a third world nation. What's more, I will never tolerate scum like trump, sessions, grassley, paul, cruise, graham etc, as legitimate leaders again. I don't EVER want another red state yahoo making laws in MY country again.

The notion that places like Wyoming get as much representation in the Senate, as California, is absurd. CA has something like 80 times the population! No wonder the country has failed. That is ridiculous.

I remember when I was growing up, all of us would have at least one neighbor on the block that was either a crazy cat lady or a curmudgeon codger that would spray us with water whenever we got close to his fence. As we got older, some of us would try and reach out to them to just be neighborly, but after a while, it was obvious they did not have all their faculties.

With the advent of social media, these folks found others who were like them. The Rump aimed his nonsense propaganda at them and they found their voice. We have been spinning our wheels trying to be "neighborly" to people who aren't firing on all cylinders. Obviously, we need to make access to mental health services far easier and without the stigma that would keep them from getting the help they need, but engaging with them regarding the lunacy they believe? That's a fool's folly.

Which is why Dems must do what they can to ensure the majority gets to govern. If that were the case Repubs would never control the Senate or win the presidency again unless they move to the middle, recognize science, end their intolerance, believe in facts, and stop supporting a demagogue.

Senate Republicans had NO evidence to consider. Doctored videos and flaming rhetoric from the managers. Reminds me of the old saying “When you want it bad you get it bad”. The obsessed and near-psychotic Democratic leadership tried one last shot at Trump and it exploded in the barrel.

Didn't you get the memo? We're past that now. Repubs relied on a bogus constitutional argument to acquit, not an evidentiary one.

We have entire swaths of the country that don't want to live in America as we have always known it. In fact the truth is that the civil war never really ended.

What do you propose that we do, force them to live the way we want forever?

Do you want to just hope that they don't eventually elect someone else like trump; but someone who succeeds next time in installing himself as a dictator? Trump damn near managed to take over. We were minutes away from losing our democracy because of trumpers. Do you seriously think they won't try again?

Already, many red states are wanting to rewrite election laws. The GOP is all about restricting voters. I'm with @HereWeGoAgain. We need to stop pretending we're ever going to convince these people. Let economics be the final arbiter because red states will flounder without the federal government.

That is the real joke in all of this. Without us they are NOTHING! We don't need them and we are better off without them. What's more, they are dangerous because we give them power artificially. They have no REAL power. If push came to shove we could squash them like little bugs.
