And yet mainstream economists have still been able to convince everyone there is a trade-off between strict lock-downs (to save lives) on one hand, and economic well-being on the other.

So the currency-issuing capacity of sovereign currency-issuing governments still goes begging...

As Keynes (near the end of his life) said of Abba Lerner's Functional Finance, the forerunner of MMT:

C19 DEATH PROJECTIONS FOR NATIONS CIRCA 50,0000 DEATHS AND ABOVE​

The USA takes up a lot of oxygen in the room by having more than 500,000 C19 deaths already, more than twice the number 2 nation on Earth, Brazil, which just exceeded 250,000 deaths yesterday. Also, with over 182,000 deaths, Mexico is experiencing a catastrophe that many seem to be ignoring. But under the 5 nations with over 100,000 deaths (the three I already mentioned plus India and the UK), there are currently also 8 nations between 50,000-100,000 deaths, all on the starting ramp to reach 100,000 in the forseeable future. There are also 3 nations not far from 50,000. Here the listing as of today, 12:00 my time:



BTW, those 16 nations currently represent 1,943,633 deaths, or 77.01% of all of the current C19 deaths worldwide.

So, I input those 16 nations into an excel table and also listed the next logical death marker:



I also input the current 7 day rolling average for daily deaths for this group of nations. Then, based on the distance in current deaths to the next logical marker, I calculated the number of days it will take at current "speed" in order to reach said markers:



As you can see, South Africa is on track to join the 50,000 club in deaths in 3 days (including today), on 2021-02-027, which means that the number of nations with between 50,000-100,000 deaths will grow from 8 to 9 Then, Italy is on track to cross over the 100,000-line on 2021-03-007, moving that number from 9 back down to 8. However, "snail's pace" Peru is on track to cross the 50,000-line on 2021-03-022, which means that for a good long while, we will again have 9 nations working their way from 50,000 toward the 100,000 line. That's a large group of nations that are going to continue to accumulate deaths for a good while, in spite of vaccinations starting to ramp up worldwide.

Now, these projections are based purely on the rolling 7-day average for each nation right now, those values can change daily, but usually the change is pretty incremental. However, as we learned from Turkey on 2020-12-010, the numbers can also change dramatically. So, wait and see.

But I did feel that it was important to note here in PF that not only the USA and Brazil are driving the massive worldwide death toll.

We can also have a pretty deep discussion as to how important said markers are, because even one death from COVID-19 is already one death too many and it's not as if it's not already a catastrophe when a smaller nation has "only" 5,000 deaths. But there is undoubtedly a psychological impact when the death toll hits a round figure, especially when that means adding a digit to the sum.

And from my perspective, if pointing these things out helps to convince people to continue masking up and physically distancing themselves from groups of people until the pandemic is really, truly under control, then I think it's worth the effort to point these things out.

ONE YEAR LOOKBACK TO 2020-02-027: MY FIRST C19 POSTINGS ON TWITTER​

One year ago today, I started looking at the numbers from WorldOMeter. I had just dropped my daughter off at school and heard on radio that this Covid-19 thing was going to end up being a real problem, so when I got home, I checked out the WorldOMeter website and that morning, I screenshotted the data (just the big picture) and posted it over at Twitter:



That screenshot was also in the OP to this thread, which was created on March 14th / 15th, 2020, depending on where you live.

So, this morning, as close to exactly as the same time as I could come, exactly one year later, I screenshotted "the big picture" once again:



That's exactly one year and 11 minutes later, to be exact. Sometimes, WorldOMeter spits data out in irregular intervals, one has to take what one can get, nöööö.

This means, from my perspective that from the moment I first saw the data one year ago until today, the number of C19 cases has increased 1,384-fold and the number of C19 deaths has increased 901-fold.

On that day one year ago, China was rank 1 with 78,504 of those 82,411 cases at that time, or 95.3% of all cases.
Today, with 89,877 out of 114,043,429 total cases, or 0.07% of all cases, China is now rank 84.

One year ago today, with only 60 C19 cases, the USA was rank 9. It is of course, now rank 1.

And so on and so forth.

A lot has changed in one year.

The end-of-month analyses are pretty intensive and take time to do well.

First, the schedule:

-these two postings are the screenshots of the Worldwide figures and the top 28 nations, all of them now over 1,000,000 C19 cases. At this moment, the Worldwide and USA figures are preliminary.

-in about 10 hours, I will publish the final USA figures in the form of a very large analysis, likely spread over 2 postings.

-Tomorrow, on 2021-02-002, I will then publish the end-analysis for the Worldwide figures for 2020-12-031. WorldOMeter has a "2 days ago" function at its main table, which allows us to wait one more day to see the final numbers. The advantage to this is that nations that may be adjusting their total figures will have one more day to do so. Like the USA analysis, the worldwide analysis will be very large and will likely be spread out over 2 postings. With the USA and Worldwide analyses I will be adding a link to a screenshot overflow thread at my blog. This will be explained in both analyses. Should for any reason the worldwide or USA numbers for 2020-12-031 be drastically changed over this coming week, then I will post an update.

Second, a new element came into the tables starting with the EOY analyses from 2020, namely, the use of the ➚ ➘ ➙ arrows within the half-monthy and monthly calculations. Those arrows mean that the current +calculation in cases / deaths is either more, less or relatively equal to the value from the month before. For instance, when you look at the preliminary worldwide figures directly below, you will see an ➚ for both the +cases and the +deaths, meaning that there were more +cases and +deaths from December 31 to November 30 as from November 30 to October 31 and so on. The mathematical proof for this is easy to see in columns P and Q.
