I'd like the opinion of this board's members about what happened here. This woman is in a tough spot with her personal life and is leaving her kid in the hands of the school. The school says they tried things like calling when a student is absent and arranging for parent-teacher conferences, but Mom said they never happened. Where's Dad?

Schools can only do so much, they can't make a kid attend classes or study. At the same time, they promoted this kid through the ranks giving Mom the impression all was OK. Worse still, half of the students scored lower than this kid which makes me think there's either something really wrong with the school, or there's something wrong with the way kids in this district are raised, and to tell you the truth, I have no idea which one correct. They both could be wrong for all I know.

    Thoughts?

Where's dad? Does he even know who dad is? Is dad still alive? Is dad in Jail? Part of this falls on the school and the teachers but a big chunk of it can be dumped at the feet of the progressive welfare state that is utterly destructive of the nuclear family and distrustful of men in particular.

Our school system used to more or less pass you anyway the second time once you failed the first time regardless just to push you out of the system as nobody wanted 15 year olds still in 4th grade. The assumption would be that they would end up getting expelled or dropping out anyway to go to work in the local factory. Factory is gone and now they don't just boot you. They will send you to one of the alternative learning schools until you end up getting expelled or dropping out.

Don't all students get a report card at the end of each term that the parent is required to read and sign off on before returning into the school for the next term? The school I attended did not let anyone that failed classes to get promoted to the next grade until they made up the class they failed during SUMMER SCHOOL.

The City of Baltimore who's tax dollars support local schools are getting totally ripped off by supposed educators that allow this to happen.

Based on the article, the mother seems to be single with 3 kids and 3 jobs and there's no indication Dad is around, so the kids started off handicapped.

The teachers, at least the more experienced ones, probably see this all the time and quickly recognize the kids who have no interest in learning and give up on them. The school then does the minimal amount of things just to say they did something and promote the kid even though he's not worthy of being promoted.

The more I think about this, the more I believe this kid's problems started in the home.

    Oh Baltimore....

As a former child who had the unfortunate privilege of attending the Baltimore public school system for a few years let me shed some light on this. My experience was many decades ago at this point but from talking to my family who still lives in that place it seems to be no better today than it was when I there.

These schools are holding pens for monsters. Not trash talking the students themselves necessarily seeing how a lot of the times its not even their own fault but yeah they are full of little monsters. You could be the most upstanding well intended student ever and you still wouldn't learn anything in these holding cells. It's impossible, getting the students under control to even sit down at the beginning of class takes half the time allotted for the class and then getting them to learn anything is virtually impossible. These "students" are the product of a literal failed society within America with zero discipline, zero manners, zero upbringing, etc. As a teacher you will spend the majority of your time breaking up fights and trying to corral the kids into even sitting down. There is almost zero desire to learn because there is zero home training provided to these kids from their mothers at home because the mothers are usually working and left the kid to the care of the state for the most part.

You mentioned where's Dad? LOL...yeah. This is inner city Baltimore...

I honestly don't even know where to begin and I could sit here and write an actual entire book on what is "wrong" with this particular situation. Let me just say that this is by no means an isolated incident for the kid in the article nor is this particular school as isolated incident. This article is simply one specific insight into what the entire school system is like in that place. I can't really describe these places accurately, you'd have to see it. Any American who grew up in rural America or even "low income" America would be absolutely mortified if you saw what these Baltimore schools were like. Baltimore is not "low income", Baltimore is a failed state within the borders of the United States.

If there are any specific questions you have I can try to answer those.

The kids problems absolutely started at home as with the majority of kids in a place like Baltimore. In Baltimore this kid is actually lucky, he has a mother who is working 3 jobs to support her kids. For a lot of kids in Baltimore their mother is a drug addict who forgets they are even there half the time. As far as fathers go almost NONE of them have a father in the home. If you're a boy in Baltimore with no father then you are going to emulate some type of male role model and unfortunately for you that male role model is probably your knuckleheaded older brother or cousin or the local drug dealers you see on the corner. And since they are your role models then you obviously aren't being raised to have respect and discipline but rather are being raised in the "streets". Then you of course are not exactly going to be spending your time paying attention in school. Then you grow up to be like them and will probably end up dead or in jail like them. And when you have kids you will probably abandon them and/or be in jail and/or dead and not raise your children like a real man just like your father wasn't a real man who left you alone with your mother who has to work 3 jobs.

It's a disgusting cycle that will never be broken. The abolition of the traditional nuclear family and the dependence on government aid for support is the number one leading cause of the horror you see within the inner city black communities of America. If anybody wants a case study of a society resulting from the "normalization" of single motherhood and government universal basic income then look no further than the black communities of the inner city ghetto hell holes of America. That is your society. The normalization of out of wedlock babies and welfare is a bigger detriment to the black community of America than Jim Crow was.

    https://thehill.com/opinion/educati...schools-are-a-tragedy-of-criminal-proportions

“Baltimore spends roughly $1.4 billion annually on education, or roughly $16,000 per student. Baltimore’s spending on education is the fourth highest of any municipality in the country. Despite this massive commitment of resources, Baltimore schools have some of the lowest educational proficiency levels in the country.”

“ At Frederick Douglas High School, which had an 87 percent graduation rate just one student out of a student body of 185 students tested in the proficient range in math. In several other public high schools around the city, not a single student passed the state proficiency test.”

In a very real sense, the dysfunction in Baltimore’s schools mirror a similar dysfunction in the city’s political establishment. In a city of fewer than 600,00 residents, with a rapidly declining school enrollment, literally thousands of individuals in the school system receive salaries in excess of $100,000 per year. Most of the recipients of this government largesse are not teachers but consultants, contractors, and administrators.“

Everything you have stated is absolutely true. I know teachers and students who can 1000% back this up. Behavior like this is beginning to creep into our county schools as well. Moving many of these students to the county with the assumption they will somehow be inspired to do better is backfiring.

Something is very, very wrong here! And I mean mental retardation on a large scale. Like chemicals being tested on the local population. Something the CIA might do. :woozy:

Or maybe it's just common core. ;)

When he turns 18 he can go to college and take remedial courses until he catches up. College is a great place that equalizes outcomes for people who got left behind in grade school. :graduate:

The number one problem is the home front, there is simply no way around that. The Baltimore school system is overflowing with children who virtually have no parents. The father is almost never in the picture and the mother is often not either seeing how she has to work to support the children. Or, unfortunately, she is a drug or alcohol addict who isn't "there" anyway. These children have no foundation whatsoever and then are tossed into a jungle of other kids with no foundation and we expect something different? We expect obedience and discipline? A respect for authority?

It doesn't matter where the kid goes it's still the same kid. These kids are pretty much left to fend for themselves at an early age in a crime ridden drug infested hellhole like inner city Baltimore. We take a rowdy undisciplined kid who raised himself from the day he/she could walk and toss them into a pen with hundreds or thousands of other exact same kids and we expect learning to happen...The most esteemed scholars on planet Earth couldn't teach these kids anything...

The failure is 100% on the society and the culture that allowed this type of home front to be "normal". There is no amount of money that can reverse this. The fix lies in returning to the traditional family where parents are available to forge the foundation in their children prior to sending them off to these public play pens and expecting miracles.

Makes me want to cry for these kids. Someone in Baltimore needs to find a solution and if they can't, someone in Maryland needs to step in. This should go all the way up to the governor if needed. We cannot just keep letting American kids fall through the cracks for decades.

I took a look at the school's website. For any public high school in America their school website is a mess. For a "Visual Arts School", it's a total disaster.

Sounds like they have an almost total focus on "arts and crafts". I don't see much on their website about reading, writing or arithmetic. Lots of "creativity".

Good luck to that kid, and half of his class who did worse than he did, breaking into the art world without the ability to read or write. Very sad.

...and what the heck? Different start dates for 9th and 12th grade (no word about 10th or 11th)....and "Returning to school is optional".

So you want to treat single mothers like crap and make it even harder for them to raise the kids.

What happens when you pull dad's out of homes. Mom's a high school drop out working there different jobs and is generally too damn tired to do much other than throw a bag of burgers on the table. She can't help the kids with the home work, assuming there is any because some knuckle head decided home work was racist, being a best quasi literate herself.

BTW: The main problem with returning to so-called traditional American values is that it's substantially built on white supremacy, slavery and segregation. You don't want to go back there.

The goal might simply be try and get them through and keep them at school as long as possible. Focusing on academic learning doesn't go too well with damaged kids (unless the teacher is incredibly talented). Talent, being the ability to speak to kids at their level, know them personally, understand their pain; in other words psychological support.

We need better schools starting with elementary and then we are less likely to have "damaged kids" by high school.

Kids in that high school are unlikely to get much psychological support from the new "Guidance Counselor". She talks about what she will do for "your students". Who is she talking to? Teachers? She isn't talking to parents and her blurb isn't talking to "the students" either.

We need funding for private schools so that all parents have a choice to pull their children out of the public school they are assigned to because of their address.

Where did I state that I want to treat single black mothers like crap to make it harder for them to raise their children?

What I want is to stop the normalization of it being perfectly fine and healthy to have children out of wedlock. That single issue is the biggest detriment to the black community in America and the title that we unfortunately hold supreme per capita along with plenty of other things we shouldn't be proud of. Without a father in the household these children have very little chance of having a solid foundation. Without a foundation what you get is what I described earlier and what the OP described in the article. This is not an isolated story by any means, this is not even the exception but rather the norm.

If you want to fix "this" you have to start with the home front. Anyone who argues in favor of other avenues to approach this crisis is simply arguing via virtue signaling and not willing address the real elephant in the room. Baltimore is in the top 5 of school spending of any municipality in America. Money is not the problem, the family structure in Baltimore and places like Baltimore are the problem.

This was an issue WELL before anybody made working from home a political issue in 2020.

This "dads are all being locked up in prison for petty reasons" argument is not as valid as many think. Yes some fathers who would be home are in prison for various reasons but more black fathers abandon their children than are in prison against their will. We've created a culture to where "everybody has a baby mama" and convinced ourselves that sending a check every month (if they even do that much) is an acceptable replacement for a father in the household. In doing so we now have nearly 3/4ths of all Black children in America born out of wedlock and roughly 64% of Black children raised by single mothers.

You couple that with the environments that these children are raising themselves in and you have a recipe for disaster as you see here.
