Polling data shows Republican party affiliation is down as independents leaning toward the Democratic party surge

The number of Americans identifying as Republicans or as independents who lean toward the GOP dropped to 40% in the first quarter of 2021, compared with the number of Democrats or independents leaning toward the Democratic party hitting 49%. And that nine-percentage-point lead is the greatest Democratic advantage that Gallup has measured since the fourth quarter of 2012, when former President Barack Obama was re-elected.

Gallup routinely measures U.S. adults’ party identification and the political leanings of independents. The latest poll surveyed a random sample of 3,960 U.S. adults by phone between January and March of 2021. And while Democratic Party affiliation actually dropped by one point from the fourth quarter of 2020, to 30% — where it has hovered for most of the past eight years — the number of Americans identifying as independent rose to 44% from 38% last quarter. And this growing number of independents came at the expense of the Republican party, as 19% of independents said they lean Democrat, compared with 15% leaning Republican. Most of the remaining 11% of independents didn’t swing either way.

    The trend continues inexorably.

Unless the Republicans choose a more centrist candidate in 2024, their chances of winning back the WH are eroding with each passing day.

Not to mention that Republicans are also facing the migration of liberal voters to Texas, Georgia and Arizona, to name a few.

    It'sn't looking good for them.

    Thoughts ?

Once the new trumplican party is gone I hope we see multiple new parties including one that actually has and practices conservative values.

America so desperately needs to escape the two party system.

From what I've heard, Trump wants to make a comeback in 2024. Pence just got a 7-figure book deal so it looks like he's ready to move on. I don't see how the Republican party can hoist anybody into the spotlight without stepping on Trump's toes (and they need his toes because his supporters that believe he was robbed have made it clear they are with Trump before party). They will have to find a way to get him to "turn the page" and I don't believe in miracles.

Older elected Republicans know where the party is headed, and it doesn't bode well.

Since 2008, a majority of voters has been unthinkable, and an Electoral College victory is also becoming increasingly unattainable.

Instead of modernizing, of connecting more with the concerns of minorities and women, the GOP has become more radical and must now live with the consequences.

Yes. It’s radical to still call women, women instead of unicorns one day and hedgehogs the next.

And just look at the radical Republicans claiming black people and Hispanics are too stupid to get online to register to vote or line up for a shot.

Less are identifying as Republicans because RADICAL Leftists are destroying their lives if they find out.

I don't identify as a Republican or a Democrat. What does it matter? Both parties have too many failings to list and that fault lies with each and ever citizen that has voted.

There isn't a single politician on the planet that isn't self serving!

Then you need a new electoral system, which is very, very difficult. I'm pretty sure the last time a 'new' party got a President elected was 1860. The US electoral system just doesn't provide much scope for new parties to get sufficiently established for long enough to challenge the big two.

The GOP is unlikely to disintegrate, just change in the same way both major parties have several times over the past few centuries.

We really wouldn’t have to make major changes, just implement some form of ranked choice.

Who is likely to put their hand up to being a dyed-in-the-wool Republican?

No, it certainly is not looking good for America. Keeping borders open does pay.

Open borders? You keep saying that, yet every day illegals are shipped back across the border to Mexico. I don't think
you are saying what you think you are saying.

I've been voting in 'ranked choice' elections for 30 years. It isn't going to make the difference you think it is. Maybe three will be some impact at State level, but not so much at Federal. Put simply it takes too many votes to elect a member of Congress, a Senator and President.

We have 12 Senators per state elected 6 at a time. That allows minor parties to establish themselves and influence legislation. In our equivalent of the House (the Lower House) the only 'minor' party that has any influence is one that existed when we became a nation over 100 years ago and has been in permenant coalition with one of our 'big two' since the 30s (or possibly earlier). No other minor party has held more than a handful of Lower House seats in that time, and then not for long. There have been a few independents, but nothing to challenge the big two.

Ranked choice voting will help minor parties, but not enough for them to challenge the duopoly.

    Are there any solutions?

I like ranked choice because it allows people to actually vote their conscious without handing the election to the worst candidate.

Families torn apart due to TDS. Plenty of people being cancelled for doing NOTHING wrong. You can be fired and/or ostracized by NOT showing support to the “correct” party especially in tech, education and Hollywood.

Businesses destroyed by BLM and ANTIFA cheered on by the MSM. City blocks burned down. Cops executed due to lies being told by Democrat politicians and the MSM.

Unless you’re independently wealthy, it’s not worth it to be put on a list that says you’re Republican right now, and it’s INSANE that anyone should even have to think that their life can be ruined due to it. But it’s happening. Hollywood, tech, education. Easier to keep your mouth shut than deal with the rabid crazies just waiting to pounce on you for any reason.

    Oh? Ok...:bored:

But, in relation to the topic, you do make an excellent point:

"it’s not worth it to be put on a list that says you’re Republican right now,"

^Obviously, the 4-year Trump Trainwreck (which destroyed America) is fresh in people's minds.

And, as long as Trump IS The GOP, any public association with the "Party of Trump" really needs to be carefully weighed.

What is happening is a **** ton of MAGA voters who the Republican Party betrayed are leaving the Republican Party and registering as Independents instead. These people are sending back Republican Party donation requests with some variation of "**** you, you betrayed us" messaging (along with ZERO money, of course). They are now aligning themselves with (and donating their money to) MAGA affiliated politicians, organizations, businesses, etc and boycotting entities who are against their interests...

Conservatives are still in the majority over commies such as yourself.

Do you have any evidence for the following:
    • Families torn apart due to TDS.
    • Plenty of people being cancelled for doing NOTHING wrong.
    • You can be fired and/or ostracized by NOT showing support to the “correct” party especially in tech, education and Hollywood.
    • Cops executed due to lies being told by Democrat politicians and the MSM.

I don't think it wise to hitch your party on a 2X impeached incumbent loser.

But more power to those folks
