All this talk of leaving Earth ignores the fact that activity in Space enhances life down here rather mightily. We are talking right now on a medium that could and would not exist at all without a very substantial part of it being in Space at all times
If you don't understand the problems of spending money you don't have then there is no point in this discussion.
If you want to fund it with government, government first have to be fiscally sound and out of debt. That is how I feel. Sorry.
China Mars rover to land between Saturday and Wednesday BEIJING -- China says its Mars probe and accompanying rover are expected to land on the red planet sometime between Saturday and Wednesday Beijing time. The China National Space Administration said in a brief notice that the Tianwen-1 probe has collected a large amount of scientific data since entering Mars orbit on Feb. 10 and the window for setting down on an icy area of the planet known as Utopia Planitia was determined by “current flying conditions.” Named after the Chinese god of fire, Zhurong, the rover will stay in the lander for diagnostics tests for several days before rolling down a ramp to begin exploring for signs of life. The mission is the first attempt at a soft landing on Mars by a Chinese spacecraft. ... https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/china-mars-rover-land-saturday-wednesday-77685387 Welcome to the Martian party, China. Assuming all goes well, at least.
Better warn the crew of the American rover! You know how the chinese drivers are................ Joke alert
FMW, the OP here is about space exploration. Govt spending on this shouldn't be the issue because such spending is tiny. Sure, you are talking about the total or aggregate spending but here we are talking about space. Every Mars mission costs Americans the price they pay for bubble gum. The entire space program would cost about the price America pays for cosmetics. The worth of just one program - GPS, would pay for the entire moon landing program about every three months. Space pays for itself. It's one of the few govt programs to do that.

You need to understand the difference between real resources and know how; and "money you don't have" Hint money is simply an IOU issued by government. link ROSS GITTINS: Funding the budget by printing money is closer than you think Just heard China has successfully landed its first rover on Mars. You don't need money to do that, you need brains and a productive economy.
Ah..I haven't seen a report of the rover actually moving around on the surface yet, so...we will see.
With less gravity pull on the moon it makes for a great stepping off point. Building a base and launch port would be a significant advantage for space exploration. Thought this is what NASA was going for in 69 when we landed on the moon.
Ahhh, but, if it's on Mars, who took the picture? Huh? Huh? Fake news, they're fooling all of you to get more tax money! I think that's a footprint in the background! I heard that round object on the front is a roll of US presidential election ballots, all filled in for Democrats. Proof that the chinese helped them win.
its animated pic, the landing success was send with radio transmission, not pictures. the rover require 8 days self diagnosis and battery charge up via its solar panel before it can move. so we probably get pic at least a week from now. I think NASA was monitor supersonic atmosphere activity during mars entry as well tremor caused by the landing thruster.
Welcome to Mars China. You did very well. Nice landing. Hope we get to see some of the data you collect.
That's what the Church said to Galileo...it took 400 years for the apology. Hopefully an understanding of fiat money by the general public won't take that long... [Meantime, try a thought experiment: imagine humans had an altruistic gene instead of a selfish gene. In that case money would never have been invented, because we would all be contributing our labor (and mental capacity) and receiving sustenance for everyone, consistent with the maximum achievable improvement in the economy. In fact the limit to the rate of improvement would be determined, not by money, by the availability of labor and productivity (which is the limit we call inflation, in a monetary economy). Hence you don't need money to explore space, you need brains, materials and a productive economy. if you can work out how to deal with that pesky selfish gene.... Now do you understand? ]
I understand it perfectly and I hate how federal government misuses it. It is you that doesn't understand.
(I see the thought experiment didn't work with you). This pandemic has shown the possibilities open to central banks and treasuries of currency-issuing governments. Hint: there is no shortage of essentials in an enforced pandemic lock-down of the non-essential economy, so the government COULD simply change the digits in the bank accounts of non-essential workers so they can buy food and pay rent/mortgage and utilities. Fact is the Fed govt. could simply cancel this covid "debt" and nothing would change; likewise govt doesn't ever NEED to issue treasuries, while there is slack in the economy. So said the Inquisition to Galileo.
