It means no matter what laws you make to stop you from doing that it isn't going to stop someone who wants to do it from doing it.
Well if an FIM-92 was available at the local gun store, something tells me that this would make things slightly easier.
Notice of the 2020 Annual List of Explosive Materials Pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 841(d) and 27 CFR 555.23, I hereby designate the following as “explosive materials” covered under 18 U.S.C. 841(c): https://www.federalregister.gov/doc...sives-2020-annual-list-of-explosive-materials --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A list. For you. From the Government.
I'm gonna say that the FIM-92 has a higher chance of destroying the airliner. For the simple reason that laser contact would result in instantly disabling the aircraft. Missile contact WOULD.
I've seen those things for sale at army surplus stores you can buy them as a teenager they're not controlled it's the missile that's controlled.
For one, if you have driven to the desert to engage aircraft, there isn't a airport nearby. If aircraft aren't landing or taking off, then they will be flying at a very high altitude and will be far beyond the range of a stinger. You would literally have to catch them taking off or landing. And don't overestimate the punch a stinger packs, it introduces very intense force but focused to a small area. It's not a threat worth worrying about. Literally.
You can probably make one is just a tube with a triggering mechanism and a coolent system on it. Probably out of bits from the hardware store. I remember launching rockets when I was a kid.
You certainly can, provided that you complete the application process. There are hundreds if not thousands of people with explosive material, up to and including C4, in their house, for personal use, right now.
I'll rephrase then: If an FIM-92 with ammo was available at the local gun store, something tells me that this would make things slightly easier.
Yeah, I'm talking about them taking off or landing. Airports like Vegas. You're insane if you think that a stinger being fired at an aircraft landing or taking off wouldn't be a threat worth worrying about.
Lack of ease doesn't deter the determined. Such an act would likely be done by a mad man that will go to any lengths.
Airliners have multiple engines, they can continue to fly if they lose power in one. Literally not worthy to worry about.
I think state government could ban SAMs and not violate either state versions of the second amendment nor McDonald v Chicago
It seeks the heat of the engine, which in an airliner are typically mounted below the wing itself. The Stinger only has 1kg of explosive in its warhead. If it hits, it's going to take out the engine, but the odds of striking a wing are much lower.
