The way things are going, there wont be to many confederate statues left standing in this country, and that's a good thing too! These statues and monuments should've never been erected in the first place?!! We don't need these symbols of white supremacy in America?!!

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Thursday that the state can remove an iconic statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a prominent spot in its capital city, saying “values change and public policy changes too” in a democracy.

The 7-0 decision cited testimony from historians that the enormous statue was erected in 1890 to honor the southern white citizenry’s defense of a pre-Civil War life that depended on slavery and the subjugation of Black people.

More than a century later, its continued display “communicates principles that many believe to be inconsistent with the values the Commonwealth currently wishes to express," the justices said.

The high court’s decision came in two lawsuits filed by Virginia residents who attempted to block Gov. Ralph Northam's order to remove the bronze equestrian sculpture, which shows Lee in military attire atop a massive stone pedestal.

Virginia promised to forever maintain the statue in the 1887 and 1890 deeds that transferred its ownership to the state. But the justices said that obligation no longer applies.

“Those restrictive covenants are unenforceable as contrary to public policy and for being unreasonable because their effect is to compel government speech, by forcing the Commonwealth to express, in perpetuity, a message with which it now disagrees,” the justices wrote.

Good. Insurrectionists, rebels and racists don't need to be honored.

Quite ironic that Governor Blackface wanted the 'racist' statute removed. Robert E Lee is only racist in the minds of racists.

You just identified every person that has ever served as or run for the Office of President of the United States. There may be an argument for less than a handful that this doesn't fit, but not more than that.

At least it wasn't removed by an angry mob. If anyone has green pieces of paper with images of slave owners, you should turn them over to me.

It's a nice statue, but it clearly doesn't belong outside of a military park or Lee's various residences in Virginia... I hope it finds a more appropriate home...

The obvious place would be at the Chancellorsville battlefield, about an hour north of Richmond, site of one of Lee's biggest victories...

My family did a driving tour of there just this summer.... I can easily think of 5 places there it could go where it would be historically appropriate and safe(r)...

Northam's choice as a replacement for the Lee monument.

This. If one actually reads the documents, the South was dependent upon the plantations and the crops, without the slavery system said crops would have been obsolete. Whereas the North by this time, was industrializing into a society that was less dependent on slavery. So the North wanted to wag its little moral finger and be like "Slavery bad, you should abolish slavery." and the South just wasn't in an economic position to do that.

Even as Jefferson Davis repeatedly asked President Lincoln for negotiations, the North would never treat the confederate government as a 'legitimate authority'. So Lincoln deliberately led 600,000 Americans to their deaths. Great guy /sarcasm.

Although some might say this doesn't really matter, I can't help but have the feeling past history is being scrubbed.

Even under Lincoln, in the aftermath of the Civil War, no attempt was made to wipe out the history of the South or their honor.
(Lincoln mainly wanted reunification, with the abolition of slavery coming as a close second objective)

Many of these statues have been in place for well over 100 years.
