The federal government bailed out Texas and 22 other states. The feds footed some amount of the bill for out-of-work Texans in 10 of the past 18 months, at a cost of $7 billion.

The funding was not a gift. It was a loan to pay the 9.5 million worker claims that had been filed since last March. And now the interest is starting to build up, and Texas will begin paying it back.

I've given up on Texas. I don't even want to drive through it anymore. They should change the name to Gilead, like the somber, religion-controlled fictional nation in The Handmaid's Tale.

 

It's laughable to try to portray Texas as a failed state.

I don't think any other state would be able to handle as much illegal (and legal) immigration as Texas has taken in and still manage to be as prosperous as it has been.

At least they're not in massive debt like California is.

So will progressive businesses from progressive states stop moving there now?

It looks like the article in the OP was deceitful and misleading. Most of that bailout referred to seems to have gone to Democrat states.

Texas underfunding their UI fund is more or less like Repubs nationally lowering taxes for the rich and then demanding social safety net spending be cut due budget deficits created by the tax cuts. It highlights where their priorities are.

You keep disingenuously bringing up Trump.

A lot of Republican business owners have to hire undocumented workers so they can keep up with the competition. If the owner of one business finds a way to cut corners and reduce costs, that pretty much forces all the other businesses to do it as well if they want to compete. Otherwise that one business tends to steal away all the business. It's not really their fault. If a government law goes completely unenforced, businesses almost have to do it.

Something you don't seem to understand.

It's a lot like athletes using steroids. Imagine if they stopped doing any testing in competitions. A lot of professional athletes trying to win would almost feel forced into taking steroids, even if they preferred not to and believed there should be rules to ban it.

Same thing with states taking money. A lot of Republican states would prefer not to take money from the federal government. But as long as they're being taxed and other states are getting that money, they might as well get in on taking some of the share too.

California actually has a balanced budget currently ($75 billion+ surplus). Still not debt free (there are 0 debt free states in the US), but one of the few states that is deficit free, and this is while having a larger illegal immigration population than Texas.

 

Many have left. But undocumented immigrants have been moving there at a faster rate than people have been leaving.

What? No one is forcing red states to take federal assistance. They do so out of necessity, not because they're in competition with other red states. The residents of those states pay less in federal tax dollars than those states receive in assistance because the residents have lower incomes. It explains why 9 of the top 10 states in terms of federal help are red states.

 

Yet people are fleeing lib states like CA to move to Texas. Go figure.
