The state was slammed with two years worth of unemployment claims in the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge quickly drained the state's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund.

The federal government bailed out Texas and 22 other states. The feds footed some amount of the bill for out-of-work Texans in 10 of the past 18 months, at a cost of $7 billion.

The funding was not a gift. It was a loan to pay the 9.5 million worker claims that had been filed since last March. And now the interest is starting to build up, and Texas will begin paying it back.

Texas Is Underfunding Unemployment To Keep Business Taxes Low. Now It Owes $7 Billion And Counting – Houston Public Media

anyone care to list the other 22 states who allowed "business friendly" unemployment systems to bankrupt their treasuries?

I've given up on Texas. I don't even want to drive through it anymore. They should change the name to Gilead, like the somber, religion-controlled fictional nation in The Handmaid's Tale.

It's laughable to try to portray Texas as a failed state.

I don't think any other state would be able to handle as much illegal (and legal) immigration as Texas has taken in and still manage to be as prosperous as it has been.

At least they're not in massive debt like California is.

So will progressive businesses from progressive states stop moving there now?

Should we talk about New York and California in relation to government bailouts?

This week, the U.S. House passed, along party lines, the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. A vote in the U.S. Senate is expected soon.
Buried within the 591-page bill is a $350 billion bailout for 50 states, tribal governments, U.S. territories, and more than 30,000 cities and counties.
Our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com finally located the $350 billion allocation, line-by-line, in a supplemental database hidden on the back end of the House Oversight Committee’s website.
We mapped the data to each of the 50 states. Click here to see how much taxpayer money Congress earmarked your hometown to receive from the COVID “relief” bill.
Congress tried to hide these line-by-line appropriations, but thanks to technology and the internet, you can search it for yourself.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s House Democrats changed the allocation formula from being based on population to the unemployment rate. This change caused 23 states to gain $31.9 billion and 27 states to lose that funding. The four biggest winners were Democratic strongholds: California—which reaped an extra $6.7 billion; New York—which added another $6 billion; Illinois — increased by $2.1 billion; and New Jersey — a $2 billion increase.

Beverly Hills, Palm Beach, Key West— How Congress’ $350 Billion Covid “Bailout” To States And Cities Gets Spread Around (forbes.com)

It looks like the article in the OP was deceitful and misleading. Most of that bailout referred to seems to have gone to Democrat states.

I would suspect that Texas is happy to hear it.

illegal immigration is a source of prosperity, or it would have been stopped decades ago.

Texas underfunding their UI fund is more or less like Repubs nationally lowering taxes for the rich and then demanding social safety net spending be cut due budget deficits created by the tax cuts. It highlights where their priorities are.

To business owners and housing developers. The common people and those who are not part of the "owning class", not so much...

We've talked about this in other threads, not going there now.

You keep disingenuously bringing up Trump.

A lot of Republican business owners have to hire undocumented workers so they can keep up with the competition. If the owner of one business finds a way to cut corners and reduce costs, that pretty much forces all the other businesses to do it as well if they want to compete. Otherwise that one business tends to steal away all the business. It's not really their fault. If a government law goes completely unenforced, businesses almost have to do it.

Something you don't seem to understand.

It's a lot like athletes using steroids. Imagine if they stopped doing any testing in competitions. A lot of professional athletes trying to win would almost feel forced into taking steroids, even if they preferred not to and believed there should be rules to ban it.

Same thing with states taking money. A lot of Republican states would prefer not to take money from the federal government. But as long as they're being taxed and other states are getting that money, they might as well get in on taking some of the share too.

It's old stat but I'm sure the amount hasn't gone down!

clearly, if america's job creators, including small business and trump inc. were not profiting there would be no immigration.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Maybe you can explain how everyone is leaving California, with many of them moving to Texas. If Texas is a failed state, what does that make California?

Did anybody else look up the other states?

Weird the thread focuses on Texas. Every other state is blue except W Virgina which is more purple.

California actually has a balanced budget currently ($75 billion+ surplus). Still not debt free (there are 0 debt free states in the US), but one of the few states that is deficit free, and this is while having a larger illegal immigration population than Texas.

Many have left. But undocumented immigrants have been moving there at a faster rate than people have been leaving.

Did you even read your link?
If Texas is "failed" at $7B what is NY at $9B and CA at $23B?

What? No one is forcing red states to take federal assistance. They do so out of necessity, not because they're in competition with other red states. The residents of those states pay less in federal tax dollars than those states receive in assistance because the residents have lower incomes. It explains why 9 of the top 10 states in terms of federal help are red states.
