Not a chance in '96. Running against a strong incumbent. Any GOP Nominee was going to be a sacrificial lamb. 1988 would've been his best shot. But, after winning in Iowa, he lost in NH to Bush 41. And that was it. The Ad that helped swing the tide toward Bush in 1988 in NH: And, from the '76 VP Debate: The Infamous "Democrat Wars" remark...
He's one of the only politicians I've met personally, and I'll always treasure his efforts to protect the people of Taiwan.
FYI, he defended Nixon. I agree he far from the worst, but I have little faith in any politician these days. That said, let him RIP !!!!
This guy would get stamped with a big fat RINO label today... maybe a Double RINO... a DRINO.... By my system of calculating EC votes, Clinton's +52 in 96 might be the last EC crushing ever (because Bill rigged the election). I still laugh that the original "Businessman outsider" (That nut Perot) got 8 million + votes that year... Dole + Perot + 3rd P > Clinton in the popular.... RIP RINO guy....
He grew into that elder statesman role very nicely. He had a way with the pithy remark that made his point with very few words.
Yep...he was...and I didn't agree with his willingness to compromise to Dems.....but he seemed to be honest about how he worked and was an honorable guy.
Lying in state today.. the absolute irony of the day will, of course, be lost on today's level of "conservatives"..
MSNBC has wire to wire coverage of the Dole funeral ceremony at the National Cathedral today (saw Tom Hanks in the crowd) As with all things somber and serious, I started wondering what this country will do to ........ hmmmm........... commemorate?...... the passing of Donald J. T****. I'm fine with him laying in state for a few minutes at the Capitol to accommodate the dozens of mourners, but I cannot imagine the country will have to go through the hypocrisy of a religious service such as today's. How do you envision that will go?? Will any former POTUS's show up? Heck, will Pence??
